Title: Yakima River valley lambs
Post by: WonkyWapiti on April 15, 2011, 11:01:37 PM
My buddy and I drove to Cle Elum today to drop off a couple of racks at his taxidermist and we decided to drive further east to check out the sheep in the Yakima River valley (We ended up going all the way to the Oak Creek Feed Station on our little excursion).  We counted about a dozen lambs.  There was one group of five that were acting like a bunch of jumping beans and they were hilarious to watch.   We also saw a nice group of about 8 big rams.  I wish I had brought my camera with me.

Take any pics of the lambs? While I was driving up White Pass, I noticed one dead lamb and maybe it's mother who appeared to be struck by cars. If I was a sheep, I sure would not stand on the road licking salt as cars are going by :bdid:.

There were a couple rams doing that very thing a week ago by the bend in the river with the gravel pit on 410. Come around the corner and had to slam on the breaks, just looked at us and started licking the road again. Same thing with a cow elk same place back in November and December too. Stupid animals.

I had left my camera at home since this was a spur of the moment thing and hadn't planned on going out there.

Yeah I saw 5 nice ram at that same bend on 410 on last Saturday. They were on the shoulder by the mud lake road. Its a shame the average joe doesnt keep their eyes out for these guys. They have enough hardship without having to deal with people.

They are often by the Mud Lake Road on 410 looking for salt. I always drive slowly there

The WDFW should put a load of salt up by mud lake to get the sheep off the road. They should also put some salt up bear creek canyon on white pass to get rid of them on the road.  The rams get pissed if you drive by them and they are standing in the middle of the road.  I've seen 4 cars get dented from the rams' horns so far this spring.
Maybe they should leave the old road on horse shoe bend when they build the new one in the next generation as soon as they get done mining the quarry out.

Good suggestion.

PlateauNDN, looks high fence to me, what do you get for a hunt  :chuckle: :chuckle:. We can not all take pics like some other folks on here. That is about how most of the pictures I take turn out as well, the ones I really want anyway :bash:.

Yeah I don't usually take a camera or cell with me when i'm stalking.  They all stay in the truck so I can't be bothered.  I would love the chance to harvest one of these guys but I don't think my luck is that good when it comes to the draw.
