Post by: elkslayer069 on April 20, 2011, 02:23:48 PM

In the last month or so ive gotten one virus and maybe another yesterday but i cant tell because the computer isnt booting up now. I have Mcafee anti virus on my hp . Am i having problems with my *censored* box computer, my anti virus or i am i getting it from having to download the pictures to view them? (by the way im on a different computer) any advise would be appreciated. Thanks - Caleb

If you think you may have a virus do a google search for a program called Spybot it is a very highly rated program by the computer geek websites, I had a issue with pop-ups. I downloaded the program installed and ran it found almost 50 spyware programs and fixed them. i almost forgot to mention it is FREE. :yike:

Also try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program (free version)

Also try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program (free version)

Malwarebytes is the best single program you can use in my opinion. Norton IS a virus and Mcaffee is a joke. If you use the free version of Malwarebytes you do have to run it manually but it's very simple to do. If you actually buy it then it is even better and you get real-time protection with it.

Spybot is ok if you can't find anything better.

 http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/)

go to the right upper corner there and download the latest version, install, update and run a complete scan.

FWIW I think Ray tweaked the site so that those on dial-up didn't actually have to download the pictures so as to speed things up for them.

McAfee and Norton are "reactive" anti-virus software. that means they first have to know about the particular virus so they can produse a data set to stop the virus. Usually that means your PC gets infected before either McAfee or Norton can react and you spend lots of cleanup time.
Neither of these are very good at keeping the crap out of you PC.

Programs like AVG and Avast are proactive, the keep a constant connection with a string of servers that actively scan anything you tell it to before it gets to your PC.
I have been using the free version of Avast (even though it is free, it was rated the best Spyware/virus protector 3 years in a row) for over 6 years now, with great results.

BTW, in case some of you did not know...the best way to keep crap off your PC is to no go where the crap is "cough porn cough", and do not click on email links that you do not know who the sender is.

I agreed with you for the most part up until this part here. Porn gets a bad rap for being a place to get viruses, the worst I have ever seen were all caused by "kid" sites. I have seen more browser hijacks and trojans from kid sites than anything else. Other things to watch for are places that tell you that you "YOU ARE A WINNER!!!!", anyone who is offering something for free, any .exe that someone emails you etc. When in doubt, don't click on stuff!

FWIW, AVG is the best of those two IMO Alchase, it has a much lower resource overhead. I've used both and both work pretty well but Avast really seemed to eat up the resources and slow systems down on startup in comparison to AVG.

Kaspersky is your best bet... you can try the free scanner at the URL below, I'd suggest you run it in safe mode if you can; shoot me a private message if you need more help or don't know how to boot windows into safe mode.

http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ (http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)

Download CCleaner as well.

Run CCleaner, run antimalware...that usually takes care of any issue.

I run AVG now and use malware bytes.....and have done pretty good but hadnt thought to update and run the system for a while being just me and I dont surf much "bad" ie porn stuff...so ran it and sure enough last time my kid was here my puter picked up cooties from those stupid free game sites...he can surf oodles of porn and nothing its those dumb game sites and myspace another one with all kinds of crud files.... try AVG it even tells you if the porn you want to surf is safe  ;) just sayin in case you are into that sort of stuff...  :chuckle:

Go to http://www.trendmicro.com (http://www.trendmicro.com) and look for their free online virus scanner called House call. Download their small installer program and then run house call. It will catch a lot of viruses and trojans that some of the other programs miss! I use it all the time when I fix computers for friends and family members.
