Title: scope power for 300RUM?
Post by: BULLBLASTER on April 20, 2011, 02:32:42 PM
I think i am going to buy a sendero in 300 ultra this friday, and am wondering what you guys think would be best. i am planning on using the burris fullfueld tac30 in either 4.5-14 x 42 or 6.5-20 x 50. is 14 power enough for doing some long shooting? or should i grab the 20?
i cant decide because the 14 power has much more adjustment ( ability to adjust farther without tapered mounts)
i know there are a few on here with this gun and wonder what you would suggest.

thanks

I have a 5.5 X16.5 X 50 on mine..  NIKON...   I have had it on there for 6 years or so.  I love it..

If this is your first 300 RUM, you will love this caliber.  Byt the way it will eat any cheap scope real quick like.

I chose NIKON, but thats just me.

thanks, this will be my first 300 RUM. i am excited to get it and start shooting. do you find the 15 power is enough for any long range shooting that you do?

Depends on how long of shots you plan on taking. From my experience, taking shots out past 400 yards requires a spotter with anything stronger then lets say about a 12 or 14 powered scope.  Reason, if you have that thing set a max,(lets say 20) take a shot out past 400 yards chances are you will never see the point of impact due to recoil. (if you miss-reason for spotter).  @400 yards, you wont have much drop or drift unless you have some strong wind gusts.  Past 400 yards, that the bullet drop and drift could exceed the field of view with recoil when scoped all the way in.  Now, if you are going to use it target shooting and mount the rifle on a sled, go for the gusto.  JMTC.

I always go for the bigger scopes I won't get anything that doesnt have atleast 14 power for my magnums I like 18-25 max the best.

Ok another question, the 6.5-20 has 50 moa of elevation adjustment. will this b good for long shots at the range? or will i max it out at 700 yards?

thanks

my 7mm has a fullfield 2 6.5-20 and i can not get to 700 yards with it and stsandard mounts,  but this scope only has 30moa adjustment.

Plenty enough in my mind, But I don't really do that much Long Range shooting... 500 yds at most.  This Caliber will sure perform better than most people can shoot.

Rather than a spotter, you could just get the 25x scope and hire a sherpa to carry it for you.
 :dunno:
This question will come down to what your definition of "long range shooting" is. That's become an open ended definition. The discussion re: dialing turrets will surely come up at some point too.

the scope i am looking at has tactical turrets. these are a must for any shooting at or over 500 IMO. it is a main requirement i am keeping in mind with selection.

what about eye relief? anyone who shoots without a brake have any problems with 3.5 inch eye relief?

I personally like the balistic plex scopes have 2 of them, sight them at 200 leave them alone, the zeiss has range marks with numbers with each mark i can aim dead on with each hash line out 800yds.

Since mine is for deer/elk, I placed a Leupold 4 x 12  50mm on it.....

Eye relief is no problem, but I am a bit larger than many guys... No break.

I have a Monarch X 2.5-10x44 with milidot on my 300 RUM.

Anything over 10 power has a lot of shake to it.. and as far as I know military snipers dont use anything over 10x in their scopes so I figure that is good enough for me up to 500 yards, which I consider my max.

Before going to a 50 size, I would recommend getting a regular 40 with a 30mm tube.. that will allow more light and keep your scope more manageable.

just my  :twocents:

no problem with eye relief on my setup either.  Thought about a brake at one time, but the damn thing already wakes up the world the way it is.  Keep us updated on what you come up with, I may buy another one here in the future.....

I had a 6.5-20x50mm Zeiss conquest on my Sendero in .300RUM. I also had a 30moa base on it to get the most out of the adjustments. This scope only had 45 moa from bottom to top. With the 30 moa base, I had 35 useable moa with a 200 yard zero. This got me out to about 1200-1300 yards (would have to go look at my chart). It will also depend on the load you are shooting. I am stepping up to the Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm. Should have enough adjustment to get me well over a mile   :o

bought the gun today, remington sendero sf2 in 300 rum for $700.
ordered the scope and mounts today also. went with the 6.5 - 20 ordered Burris extreme tactical rings and a EGW 20 moa base.
hope it all gets here next week so that i can put it together.
going to head to cabelas before tuesday and buy reoading stuff and a box of factory loads. going to reload with 200 grain accubonds and retumbo powder. probably try 210 bergers eventually also.
