Title: New Trail Cam pics
Post by: coonhound on May 28, 2008, 07:42:42 PM
Well I just picked up my 1st trail cam, a Moultrie D40, it's just a cheapy but it does a pretty good job.  I've been getting a ton of deer coming into it but only two small bucks and one mystery critter, my guess is a Bobcat but it's pretty blury?

Nice pics.  I have a cheapy too.   Seems to work pretty good for me.  good luck with it.

Is the D40 that bad of a trail cam?  Pics look alright to me, but if anyone has any suggestions, let me know.  I don't want to break the bank, but I'd like to pick a couple up.

mine has worked fine.  I figure if it comes up missing some day I am only out 100 bucks  instead of 200-500 .

Nice pics! Can you leave a trail cam out all year? I'd like to pick one up and put it on the property we deer hunt on, but I'd have to leave it there til the next deer season.

Cabela's has them for $99 but you can find several on E-bay in the $90's, I only paid $80, of course you will be competing with me on the good deals, I'm going to have to pic up a couple more, these things are fun.

Went out and checked the camera this morning, lots of deer, still no good bucks, the little fuzzy nub buck from earlier is growing out a little and a nice spring bear decided to come in for look around.

Nice pictures for sure from an economy camera. I might have to pick one up. Will they stand up to a heavy rain?
Are you using something for bait? It looks like all of the critters are in the same place.

nice pics....the bear looks to be of pretty good size and still has plenty more time to grow a bit. looks like there might be somthing keeping them in front of your cam. i have a cam and wouldn't mind hearing if there is some trick you have to keep them there. as for the blurred pic it sure doesn't look like a deer due to height and length....could be a bobcat, lord knows there are plenty of them around.

As far as the rain, it's been out there for about 3 weeks where most of the time it's been raining, so yes it looks like it has no problem with rain.

The bait question, I picked up some salt at the feed store and stirred it into the top few inches of dirt, trying to mimic a mineral lick.  This is not set up for hunting just something fun to watch behind the house.

My sole reason for the camera is to monitor a few of the elk wallows I frequent in September, I'll be taking them up in mid August hoping to see what's coming in before I take to the woods with my bow in hand.

Well I'm finally getting a couple of the bigger bucks I've been looking for, not great pics but I'm sure I'll get more opportunities.  Kind of cool, the big one in the middle is in his summer red and buck in the back is still in transition.  It's going to be fun watching their bone grow...

you say you bought the salt at a feed store. was it salt you can buy at any store or just feed stores. it seems interesting and i would like to try it myself. i have a digital cam and am looking for good ways to keep animals in front. please let me know how much salt you used and how often you reapply it. thanks
Title: Re: New Trail Cam pics

The feed store would be the cheapest, I'm sure you could buy a bag of rock salt at the grocery store but the bag I bought at the feed store was only $5.00 for 50 lbs.

I don't know how often I will have to reapply, I put all 50 lbs in about a 5' x 5' area and mixed it into the top few inches of dirt, I've got a feeling it will last a long time?  I'm new to this method myself.

Good idea on the rock salt. I picked up my first trail cam yesterday on Ebay, its the 35mm version but it will work for now (just bought a new bow so gotta keep the hunting expenses covert  :chuckle: :chuckle:
.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that may boost my ability to attract deer/elk to the cam?

Man I'm having fun with this camera, now I have a 2nd bear coming in, it's just a small bear but gave me a couple decent shots.  The quality is so so, my camera was covered in moss and dirt and water from the storm we had the other day.

I think the camera's only been out there about 3 weeks and I already have 5 different bucks and 2 different bears.  I'm surprised the elk haven't found it yet, I'm sure they'll stumble upon it soon.

Coon,

Just curious,  What part of western Wa is this?   You just really don't realize what animals are out there until you are able to document it.  I'm sure the salt is helping but that's totally cool bear pics...

I'm from Eastern Lewis county.  I'm fortunate to live in a very rural area, my camera is only a 1/2 mile walk from my house.

Another buck I haven't seen before, not huge but it'll  be fun to see if he ends up a 2 or a 3 point.

The main reason I posted these pics is to show the difference in quality settings, I had been taking the previous pics on High quality, these were taken on Medium, next I'll try Low, so far I don't see a difference.

Just fabbed up some Bear boxes on Friday.  Scoyoc5 and I built 4 boxes, i just hung one this morning, looks like they'll get the job done but I think they're a little inconvenient so we may be building a new and improved model soon.  At least the  camera is safe for now.
