I have several mouth calls and have never really worried about the hygiene aspect. Do any of you wash or treat them in a special way?
-
I make sure they air dry quickly and the put them in a little container that the air can still get in, I have never washed them unless ive dropped one or something, I used dish shop and made sure I cleaned the soap of really well :chuckle:
-
Yeah sounds good to me but I keep mine in the refrig.....I have some from 3 yrs ago and are broken in nicely .....
-
I used to dunk them in some rubbing alcohol and then let them dry real good. Then store them in a clean container of some kind.

This topic is no fun. You ruined the plethora of jokes that would have come. :'(

:chuckle: Thats where I figured it would head, hence the second part of the subject line.

Clean with mouthwash or as mentioned alcohol...rubbing or otherwise...lol. Know a few folks that got sore throats from mouth calls put away without proper precautions. Better safe than sorry.......
-
Not to mention they can get real nasty tasting without some care after use.

Just don't loan them to your hunting partner :yike:

I use 50% mouthwash and 50% water mix. Then I carefully separate the reeds with plastic toothpicks so the reeds don't stick together. I store them in a frig which keeps the latex tight. Definitely disinfect plus keep them away from sunlight and heat.

each year I get a new one just like elk calls, never really thought a old nasty call was worth saving year after year :chuckle: When they are like 5-8 each for me. Get the same ones and they sound the same and they don't taste nasty!

I'm talking daily after each hunt - not once a year :chuckle:
-
Never done nothing but put them in the fridge. Use calls that are at least 10 yrs old.
-
Daily: Let them air dry as often as possible.
Long Term: clean with diluted peroxide mix (alcohol can shrink different types of latex/rubber) and store in the fridge. I always used to buy new calls every year, but now I know a guy ;)
-
I buy new ones every year which helps keep JPhelps in business.
-
I also probably hunt more than the average guy. The beauty of having birds real close to home.

Teaching my self to mouth call...soon all mine are cheap never really cleaned them
