Title: Gobble'n & Drum'n
Post by: klickriverchromer on April 24, 2011, 05:35:29 PM
Well I decided to go out for the morning last night at around 11:00 pm.  Got up at 3:45 am and headed to a spot I've heard birds before. Got up to the spot at 6ish and parked and started walking the road and listening.  Got about three hundred yards up the road and heard what we all been listening for!! A loner up in the roost. As much gobbling that was going on you would have sworn there was a flock in the tree.. I sat down and spotted him in the roost across a big drainage.. I decided to make my move. I bailed off the hill down in the drainage and worked my way around the hill to a knob I figured he would head too, it looked like prime strutting ground.. As soon as I got onto the knob I saw a nice laid down pine to set up next too. I got set up real quick because I could hear that he was on the move towards me.. I made some soft puring on the slate and he started gobble'n and chuckle'n up a storm as he was running up the slope right at me.. He stopped at 30 paces and started strutting and drum'n and drum'n... He stuck that head up to let out a gobble and BOOM!! This all took about 25 min. I think it was my quickest hunt ever.. Wish I had my big camera, so I could of got some quality shots.. These will have to suffice though.. Needless to say it was an awesome Easter morning..

Man if it were always that easy there would be no more birds! Congrats on a good looking bird, and quick hunt.

What a great Easter ... congrats!!!

A few years back (on private land) after a 7 hr drive, my total time out of the truck until back in with two tagged birds was 20 minutes ... then a 7 hr drive home ... not sure I would ever want to do that again ... think its to much fun spending time in God's church watching and listening to his wildlife choir.

Yes Sir Boneaddict.. There is definately more birds in there I just got lucky and jumped all over this guy in his roost.. Didn't have to go as far as I had been anticipating I would.. Last yr. I had a hen'd up Tom making me crazy because his little ladies would perk up and lure him away when I got chatty w/ them!  I'll still be heading in there again because I'm sure there is more action to be had.. Maybe taking a buddy and packing my lens.. Hope to get after it soon..

Thanks for all the comments.. I think with the weather change we should start to get some more action.. Birds are talking more and alot of the hens are bread now.. Still have a month or so to put it on'em.. So go get'em.
