First of all has anyone been seeing anything up there??? and secondly does anyone have any advice on this unit? I know it is still early but if anyone has any tips let me know!
-
I have been up about a half a dozen times since the season started.I haven't seen any fresh peels yet, but i did see a cub the other day. When are you planning on going up and giving it a try?
-
Was in there on Saturday. Not a lot of sign but I did see a bobcat.
-
I saw a house cat up there yesterday.Kinda surprised me.
-
We have been up once so far. Not sure if we will get up this weekend or not but im sure we will the next weekend.
-
Just went up again, snow levels dropped nothing really moving but the usual elk and deer. We need some better weather.
-
I went up friday and did some calling.I got a yote still no bear yet.
-
I hope it will be getting better soon with the better weather coming. If you have the spring bear temp pass can you take a coyote if you see one?
-
I don't know for sure.Do you have a temp pass.I have only seen one vehicle up there so far that had a temp pass on it.
-
Ya a temp spring bear pass
-
Ya a temp spring bear pass
Do you drive a white toyota?
-
I have a temp pass. First time in the area was wednesday and went back yesterday evening. Wednesday I just saw elk and deer. Yesterday was only rabbits and 1 elk. I did see 3 fresh piles of scat.
-
Ya a temp spring bear pass
Do you drive a white toyota?
No we were in a lifted white f350
-
Went back yesterday, mostly deer and a few elk. I found an area with some newer piles of scat. I am hoping for some steady nice weather to come in the next few weeks :(
-
Yeah we need some nice weather to get them out and moving around for sure!
-
I need someone that can call bears.I found some great spots to call.
-
I can't believe this weather :bash: . I might head out for the evening if it clears up a bit. Can't see a bear sitting at home :chuckle:
-
where would you be in the woods in a pouring down rain???the bears are there now
-
What I should have said was, I am going to head out after I take the kid and get the mother's day present! I was trying to blame it on the weather :chuckle:
-
Sounds like there has not been alot of excitement there yet, Hopeing to get up there soon if work lets me! I have been looking every day to see if you guys had some good stories and pic's.

Did you say before that you would be bowhunting,if so do you call bears in to bow range or do you spot and stalk them.
-

:chuckle: :chuckle: dark timber
-
When I lived in Graham, Champion used to feed the bears in the worst areas where they tore up the trees. They would tell you where that was ate because they wanted dead bears and living trees. It's probably changed I bet.
-
I have called but never any luck, I have always just spotted and then stalked. Never have used a tree stand, I gotta keep moving and covering land. Some of my best bears have just been the luck of walking up on them. If your going to be bow hunting make sure your you have a good shot! I made the mistake of hitting alittle high on one at approx. 12 yards, ( Not a happy bear ) luckly for me he gave me another chance. Good luck on your hunt.
-
Jumped one crossing the road the other day.
-
Thats a good sign! you are the first one i have heard of seeing them up there so far!
-
Was up again this afternoon and found a brand new wrung tree! It was nice to see the sun out too while up there!
-
Good. We didn't get out this weekend. Hopefully soon! keep me posted!
-
will do
-
this weather is perfect for bears right now,wet cool, and the thermals are really starting to work...
-
Thanks for the updates, sounds like they may be moving around a little.
-
Went out yesterday and saw 8 rabbits,3 grouse,17 deer,12 elk and a coyote!
I think I found 4 peels from last year :dunno: They where all in one general area, is this a good spot to stay in or should I move on ? What time of day is the best for bear activity?
-
It's probably not a bad idea to concentrate on, would definitley try to find some fresh sign in the near future before spending too much time there. I like mid day when the sun is gleaming!
-
I am planning on going back wednesday, this will be my 5th trip into the farm. I feel like I am getting to know the area better each time, I think I will get a little deeper into the timber. Sunday I was up around 3,000 and that is where the snow is. I got snowed on and didn't see 1 track of any animal in the old or new snow. What elevation are you all hunting at? I saw new scat around 1,800-2,000.
-
I've been spending most my time right around 2,000 ft. A lot of guys like to hunt the snow line.
-
you guys should be in bears now!!!!!
-
Ya! I wish we could of went up today! I think it will start getting good soon!
-
you guys should be in bears now!!!!!
I'll take any tips you wanna give :)
-
:yeah: Pleeeaaaassssseee!
-
Went out yesterday and man was it wet. I was on a fresh set of tracks and he was pooping every 20 yards or so. I really thought we where going to get an opportunity to actually see him but no go. I though about calling but I did not have a visual and didn't want to scare him out of the area.
On a side note, I saw a really nice heavy 5x5 bull in velvet that is going to be a brute
-
Been in there the last couple of days, I was in Kentucky on leave the first part of the season, found a few fresh peels but thats about it. Hows everyone else doing now?
-
Going in tomorrow!
-
Good luck, kill a big one.
-
Thanks, I'll post an update tomorrow night!
-
Sunburnt, elk, deer, but no bears. Saw some sign and one of the biggest piles of bear crap I've ever seen! Beautiful day in the hills though!
-
At least you had a good day, I think I will be in there tomorrow, I'm new to bear hunting so it's kinda like pissin in the wind, but I'm having a good time. I'll be sure to keep you posted
-
Good Luck!
-
Another good day in the hills yesterday, lot of deer and elk, but still no bear. I have become somewhat obsessed now. I am determined to get on one before the end of season. Had to miss this morning, but will be back in this afternoon if possible and tomorrow for sure
-
We will get on them sooner then later!!! Hopefully we will head up tomorrow too!
-
Saw a bear today after setting some cams. Not in kapowsin but in the big scheme of things not that far away either. Get em fellas!
-
Went out Saturday to try my luck. I wanted to try a spot I found a fresh peel and fresh scat last week and give calling a try. I get about 1/4 of a mile down a old spur and see 4 elk feeding and they don't know I am there. I Walk a little further and a truck starts coming up the road, damn! Instead of backing out he proceeds to drive towards us. Nice guy but the noise of the truck had to of scared anything that was in the area. He said he was going to turn around and drove up the road to the next turn out and that is when a herd of 13 elk bust and start to crash through the woods, damn again. At this point I was like "ohh well" this area is a bust now but I still wanted to try to call in this area since I know there is a bear around. It is a very small cut that backs up to tall dark timbers, the peel and scat isn't to far into the timbers. My plan was to maybe get the bear to come to the timberline. I position myself on the small hill so I can see the entire cut. I start calling on and off for about 50 mins until dust with no luck. This was my 8th trip to the kapowsin for spring bear and that will be my last trip on the weekends :chuckle: .
-
Well, didn't get to hunt as much as I would have liked this weekend, but I still had a good time. I'm new to bear hunting and hunting timberland like kapowsin in general. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to approach it. I have found a small amount of sign but nothing to get too excited about. It seems like everywhere I try to go is so thick you can't get though it. Maybe things will come together before the season goes out. From what I hear, a bear was taken on the 10th of May and thats it. Good luck to everyone
-
Heading back out tomorrow. I am going to try a timber patch up by the snow line. It is a nice south facing slope with real old dark timbers. I will not give up until a bear hits the dirt or the season ends. It's get serious time, putting away the bow and the muzzleloader and busting out the 7mm.
Remember bears also travel old grassy spurs looking for easy meals such as the grass on the side of thees roads :chuckle: so don't drive down them. All you are doing is spooking them and pushing them deeper into the woods. I saw more than a few rigs doing this on Saturday :twocents:
-
Good luck man, I feel the same way, I'm going to hunt as much as I can till the end. Once again, good luck
-
Well I didn't see any bears yesterday. Here are a few pics I have been taking along the way. Sorry about the quality of some of them, :chuckle: my son was getting bored so I handed him the camera
-
I wonder if the last pic was made by a porcupine, what do you all think? There was another peel a few trees down that was much higher up the tree and no doubt a bear.
-
I went in late yesterday afternoon and glassed a cut for awhile, I'm going to try and hunt friday, I have a new plan :chuckle: I have a few pics that I have taken, I'll try to figure out how to downsize and post them. Maybe this spring won't turn out to be a bust.
-
dkecoleman, where you in a silver honda? That was the only rig I saw all day.
-
No, I drive a red chevy silverado reg cab. You going to hunt any this weekend? I'm going to try and hunt a few days anyway, time is running out.
-
We will be up one day this weekend. Im just waiting for someone to drop the hammer on one!
-
i will be there in a silver toyota rav 4 sat with my kids. they had fun last saturday just spotting some deer and a few rabbits , or as the girls call them, bunnies.
-
Good luck this week-end..Don't forget the pics..

Went out for the evening hunt last night. The fresh bear sign is starting to show up more and more now but still no sightings for me. And from the writing in dust on the "sign in" shack somebody didn't see any either :chuckle:
-
Just got home from a evening hunt, didn't see any bears yet again, but I am seeing alot of peels, I followed a trail today and there were fairly fresh peels every 50 feet for along way, I'm not seeing any scat though. Has me worried I'm mistaken on the sign I am seeing. All in all, a very good day in the woods. Seen a really nice bull today, he's going to be a hoss and one dumb coyote.
-
monday we found fresh tracks in the snow. didnt see any bears.
-
Its getting close to the end and still no bears??? Seems to be slow but I'm optimistic! They will start dropping soon!
-
We just have to keep at it, one of us will get one
-
Saw a bear last night(around 430ish)! Didn't get a shot as he saw me when I saw him. This weekends forecast calls for some killin though!
-
Once this nice weather hits the hunting should really get good, this weekend will be teh time to be out there.
-
I agree! they are calling for 75 degrees!!! :IBCOOL:
-
Good luck fella's. Should be a great day today
-
Well still no luck, I think I'm getting closer though, so I have a question. The spot I have been hunting has 6 fresh (within the last three days) peels, good ones too. So I know there are bears in the area. What kind of range do bears have, will a bear stay close to an area he is working or is their pattern unpredictable? Seems to me they are eating mostly ants in the stumps, everyone I see has been smashed into peices. I have been hunting in the timber, am I better off focusing on clearcuts so I can cover more ground or staying in the timber with the sign I have found. It's getting down to the wire but I'm going to keep at it, as much as possible. Can't kill a bear on the couch.
-
hunt the peels i would say, glass them from a distance if possible, its got to get better with this warmer weather :twocents:
-
Have you guys been hearing if any have been taken out of there. Have you talked to Clyde?
-
Clyde says a few have been killed. My buddy talked to a guy that missed one right on the road directly in front of a couple fresh peels that we had previously seen(about an hour after they were peeled). Says it was all of 300 pounds.
-
We are running out of time guys :bash: With my son's spring football starting up, I don't know if I will be able to get out again. Someone make it happen!
-
i am going out saturday with the blindpig. its our last shot.
-
get em guys! we have to make it happen this weekend!
-
I'll be up all weekend too. Good luck fellas!
-
Well we almost made it happen with just hours to go in the season. About 5pm this evening my buddy and I rounded a corner and there he stood in the middle of the road, all 3-400 pounds of him!!! He was a stud! We both flew out of the truck and my buddy was able to put one round in him as he was attempting to waddle himself off the road. Tracked blood down into a hell hole and lost it in the bottom near the creek. He's sick to his stomach and I'm just depressed because it would have made for a great story! We both drew the archery Quality Bull tag(White River) yesterday and then had a chance to kill a monster the next day! DAMMERS!
-
Wow would of been nice to get that one! I actually heard the shot believe it or not! We were making a set up to call at about 5 and heard a shot not too far from us! It had to of been you! We were about 2 or 3 miles past the check in station
-
hahaha yep that was us. We were just up off the 500, less than a mile off the main line. Good possibility that thing came screaming across the main line after he was hit! Man this sucks, I don't know that I'm gonna be able to sleep tonight, he was a pig!
-
Was that you guys in the black Chev?
-
Black ford yes

I would be going back in there and looking for him some more. I would let someone know about it and then you will be o.k. to go in there and look for it. If you guys only spent a couple hrs looking at last light, you could go back in there and maybe find it. I would not give up so easy.
-
hahaha yea we passed you coming out. I was in the white dodge and my buddy was in the white ford. He found me up there this afternoon and I had just hopped in with him for the evening. You know Carp thats not a bad idea.
-
I think you should go up and look for it again. I mean you hunted this whole season and finally got a shot and to leave it go to waste...... it would be a shame. Thats how I got my blackie this year. found him the next day. they dont go far!
-
Yea you never know. Not sure how well he was hit. We had quite a bit of blood in the beginning and it then just got less and less. Its nasty, thick, and dark in there too. I might give Meshoff a call in the morning and see if they'll leave the gate open(they'll lock the walk in areas back up in the morning) and let me take one more peak in there.
-
were you in the first damage area road on the right? the first walk in gate?
-
No the 500. It's the first road to your left once you get off that patch of pavement on the main line just past those few houses. Guess that wasn't you as I thought it was a black Chevy just turning onto the 500 as we were headed out tonight. Did see a darker colored Ford parked off to the side just up from the gate as we were headed out though.
-
that was probably us. we made a few set ups trying to call before driving around
-
Well we got a hold of the game dept and went back in this afternoon and evening but no dice.
-
Dang that is too bad! I wonder how many were taken this year! seems like not too many!
-
Sorry to hear about your luck swatson, I knew there was a good bear in there. I have been hunting that road and the other five hundred all season. I can say I learned alot though. We'll get'em in the fall.
-
@KG-According to Clyde only two were harvested that he is aware of. @DK-yes that area got torn up. I know of one guy that shot at and missed a really nice one down towards the end of that road. Not sure if you saw the two peels directly in front of one another right off on the right side of the road but he shot at that bear right in front of those peels. I actually had found the first one and it looked like it had been peeled 5 minutes earlier. Took a picture to show my buddy who was up there. I showed him, went home and he called me a couple hours later and said hey did you see the peel right behind that peel and I said there wasn't, he said there is now. I looked at the pic on my camera and you can see the 2nd tree that hadn't been torn up yet. Kinda funny.
