Title: DOG POINTING IN WRONG DIRECTION?
Post by: BIGINNER on April 26, 2011, 02:15:56 PM
MY WEIMARANER JUST STARTED SCENT POINTING A COUPLE DAYS AGO.  I USE A BIRD LAUNCHER THAT I HIDE IN THE FEILD, WITH A PIGEON IN IT.  I DID THIS MAYBE 4-5 TIMES IN A 2 WEEK PERIOD.  SOMETIMES HE WILL RUN OUT TO THE FEILD, AND I COULD TELL THAT HE SMELLS THE BIRD,  BUT WHEN HE GOES ON POINT, HE IS POINTING AWAY FROM THE BIRD....  :dunno:  :dunno:  HE HOLDS POINT REALLY GOOD, AND DOESN'T BREAK AT ALL UNTILL I LAUNCH THE BIRD,    DO I CORRECT HIM WHEN HE IS POINTING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION?  USUALLY WHEN HE DOES THIS I TUG ON THE CHECK-CORD A LITTLE TO GET HIM TO SEARCH AGAIN, UNTILL HE POINTS TOWARD THE BIRD,...

MY FIRST THOUGH TO WHY HE DOES THIS,  IS MAYBE THE AREA I HIDE THE LAUNCHER IS TOO SMALL AND THE SCENT FROM THE BIRDS IS STILL IN THE AREAS WHERE I PREVIOUSLY HAD THE LAUNCHER?  :dunno:

AND ALSO, WHAR SHOULD I DO WHEN HE POINTS IN THE WRONG PLACE?

THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

Are you hunting him in to the wind ?

Really watch the path you take to plant the birds. Always walk where you will not be crossing paths with your trail before bringing him into the scent cone. If I am sloppy and don't pay attention to this my dog will flash point my trail because she knows it leads to a planted bird. May or may not be it but just an idea. I would not correct him on birds until the bird is flushed to save you some head ache down the road.

Make sure you know where the wind is coming and bring your dog in at a 90 to the wind so it can't follow the scent cone, I wouldn't pull my pup off point, I would however walk right through the direction he is pointing so the dog knows there is nothing there.  Its hard to give real good advice though not being there and seeing exactly what is going on just my 2 cents:)

let that bird launcher sit a while! you want your scent to grow weaker, and the birds scent to grow stronger and cover a good area. if its a windy day you don't have to wait as long, if its pretty still then leave it alone as long as your schedule allows. this also applies to warmer and colder days and humidity ect ect ect ... its just best to the leave alone for a bit!

remember this time of year scenting is difficult due to grass growth and moisture. Swirling winds etc will all play a part. He might be partially scenting and sight pointing a bit too?
