sent In my paperwork for my 08 trapping liscence. does anyone else here trap. (live traps)
-
Yes, live traps, padded legholds and conibears. Been a licensed trapper here since 1994.
-
machias. correct me if I am wrong but I thought we could no longer use connabears and padded footholds. how is your success on the live traps. what kind of game are you getting.
-
I do quite well, I average about 15 to 20 beaver with padded legholds and conibears (on the nusiance permits). Probably 30+ coons and 40 to 50 skunks. Several bobcat and the occasional badger. A few muskrats and a few weasels.
-
Nice. thanks for the clarification.
-
i hope to get a permit for body-gripping traps this year, since i'll be 18
i have access to as many traps as i need, just gotta get the permit
-

I do have a butt load of traps and related equipment if any of you are looking for this kind of stuff. Leg hold traps, conibears, live traps, snares, setting equipment, scents, baits, you name it i have it.let me know if i can help.Oh by the way have a ton of trapper and predator caller, fur fish and game, and trapping books
-
Im not a trapper, but if any of you guys could give me some advice for getting me a bobcat, Im all ears.

Best thing for you is to call a bobcat in with a predator.
-
Sky, Ive been doing that.....just no luck :dunno: I can call yotes in but so far no bobcats. I use E-callers and mouth calls, and Ill stick in a cat looking spot for almost aa hour or so but they wont come in.

Whitey,
I'd be interested in your stuff.
I'm doing nuisance wildlife work, part time, now.
Krusty :hello:
-
Sage, most of the bobcats I have called in have been at night, have you tried it?
Whitey, whatever Krusty dosen't want or take, let me know, I'll probably buy it off you as well.
-
Machias, I used to do a little calling at night back home, but nothing to serious. So Im not sure I even did it right. Have any pointers you care to share? What type of light source do you use? BTW are you from Maine? I have a cousin that lives back there and he has sent me some pictures I think the name of the area was the same as your call sign.

:) I like to use flicker in distress calls at night for cats. 30-40 minutes at a stand. I use a red lense on my headlamp and I hunt with a 12ga with 00 buck shot. The last two years running lions with dogs iup in the NE part of the state, I saw at least 25 Robert tracks to every lion track!
I was stationed at Loring AFB, ME from 1981 to 1983. I used to fish and hunt the Machias River, really loved that area alot!!
-
Might have to pick your brain over on that Machias. Do you blind call or do you set up on tracks etc.Open areas or brushy? Thanks in advance.

Sage, I do cold calling, but have my best results when I call near cat toilets and heavy tracked up areas, for obvious reasons.

Whitey,
If I have to, I'll blow off my weekend plans, to get some trapping gear.
But, I'd be willing to wait 'til Monday and let you gather your stuff over the weekend, too. ;)
Beaver traps... that's what I'm most interested in.
Squirrel (especially repeater type) traps, a couple bigger 'cat/'coon cages, and some other incidentals, are also on my wish list.

I would be interested in the books if you still have them. Let me know what you've got if it is still around. Thanks.

Has anyone taken the trapping test this year? I have to go all the way to Olympia to take it and want an idea of what it's like.
Thanks,

Hey JB,
Did you do the home study option? If so did you contact Chuck Ray or how did you go about getting the info. Chuck hasn't been returning my calls. Thanks

He is notorious for not returning calls. After a couple years I sent an email to a higher up and finally got some info. I trully feel that F&G does not want trapping. :dunno:

Hi -
I actually called the Oly office and they were really helpful. About a week after my call I got a letter with some forms to fill out. After I mailed that to Othello I got the Home Study materials. I just need to take the test.
-
Thank you guys for that info, I got it taken care of yesterday.
