Well I've been going over all the special permit hunts and trying to figure out what to apply for, and got to wondering what I would do with a sheep head/horns if I was lucky enough to draw a tag and kill a nice ram. I'm pretty sure I won't have to deal with this issue, since odds are in the neighborhood of 1 in 400, but I do have 15 points.
So what can be done with the horns if you're not going to do a full shoulder mount? It almost seems like a waste to not mount the head but there must be some other options. What about a European mount? Does that work well with a sheep? And if so, what is the cost?
-
I would really try to do a shoulder mount on any oil tag animal. But sheep euros turn out very nice! I have 3 Arapawa ram euro mounts in our living room and they are sweet!!! Cost about 200 to do with a nice wood plaque.
-
I personally will be doing either a pedistal or a life sized. But euros are awesome too. The great thing about them is that you can pick them up and actually hold them in your two hands and get a real sense of the enormity. They have big solid noggins that can only really be appreciated by picking them up. I'm an antler addict, always fondling my sheds, so I find myself doing euros on most deer and elk not worthy of mounts. I guess I'm weird like that. Antelope also make good euros. Pros and cons to both, I suppose. But if you're on a tight budget, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a euro. Just my :twocents:
-
Sheep euro's are really cool.
-
I'd be really tempted to do a full body mount on an OIL ram. If not that, I saw that Cameron Hanes did a shoulder mount for his father-in-laws and had the rest made into a bench!
-
OK, well it sounds like a sheep will look good as a Euro mount, so that's what I'll be doing if I was to draw a tag. I wouldn't be willing to spend the money for anything more than that (don't have the money anyway- it would have to go on a credit card). And besides that issue, my wife wouldn't want it hanging in the house, so what's the point? I could hang it out in the shop in my "man room" but I've already got my deer head out there so not a lot of room for it there either. I'm sure I won't have this problem to worry about anyway.
-
If you were to go with a euro mount, it would still be wise to save the cape. A good Bighorn cape could sell for 800.00 or mabye even more. A good lifesize hide and you could possibly double that.
-
have the cape tanned in case you want it for future use. and Euro for current display. Give your self the opportunity to have the shoulder mount done in the future.

:yeah:
Thats what I did with my euro this past year.

Yes, just more critical with a sheep or mountain goat or moose based on the availability of capes..... specifically one that will fit your horn or antler set

Great Idea!

Bobcat this is a Mouflan I did last year. Just a smaller version of a bighorn. I think they look cool as a euro, but if I were you I would have the cape tanned and save it just in case. But if not save the cape for a Taxi Im sure youd get the euro mount for free 8)

You can not buy, sell, or barter (trade) any parts of a Bighorn Sheep. Unless you are able to aquire a permit from WDFW. The permit part is all new language that was updated to website about 3 weeks ago.

(7) If you request a written permit to offer for sale, sell, purchase, or barter the nonedible parts of wild animals listed in subsection (2)(c) of this section, and your request is denied, you have a right to a hearing under the provisions of chapter 34.05 (http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=34.05) RCW. -
I am sure you could get permission from the WDFW if the circumstances are explained.
-
Bobcat if I ever got lucky enough to get drawn I would take out a second morgage to get it mounted ....hahaha :yeah: A buddy drew a couple years ago and got a nice one ...He said it took a whole 10 min into his hunt before squezzing the trigger ..
-

Awesome job Bucklucky ...very nice !!

This state has some screwed up laws. A legal hunter cant even bring out a cape without jumping through hoops with the wdfw. What a joke. all for a simple cape. I guess fish and game doesnt mind waisting a perfectly good cape if all they want is a euro. Shame on them :chuckle:
-
I do not understand the meaning behind some of there laws.....oh well.
I am going to make a call to WDFW Office and see what my chances are of getting a permit to buy a Sheep Cape.
-
I'd think that the permit to hunt and kill them would be inclusive in what you did with the animal, but then again I am not a money hungry institution. GEEZ
-
Euro's look good on all sheep. Here is a hybred of a coriscan / 4 horn.
But I don't know a bighorn, I would seriously be talking to a taxi. I am quite sure you could get a decent price on a shoulder mount.

I love Euro sheep mounts and elk and deer for that matter.....
-
I would say donate them to me, educational purposes! I promise I will put them in my classroom and use them as a teaching tool! I will even pay shipping ;)
-
i would take out a second morgage, WHEN i get drawn no matter how big the ram is it's going on the wall shoulder mounted
-
Nothing wrong with doing a euro especially if money was tight. They still look awesome. When I get drawn, I'll be going all out for either a standard pedestal or a wall pedestal with some cool habitat. My wife doesn't dig the whole mount thing either, I just show up at home with them and cross my fingers :chuckle:

I recommend a shoulder mount. That is what I did with mine. (I had 3 points).
People who visit the house and look at the sheep over the fireplace like it better than my moose (I had 5 points).
But if you run in a crowd that has euro mounts.
I saw a lot of euro mounts in Germany. The castles were full of them.
Personally, I think the average person who does not hunt would like the shoulder mount.
If you have to explain the euro mount then it loses something.
But maybe you only have other hunters in your house and 20 years from now there will be only hunters entering your house then thats different. I have had great comments from the pizza delivery guy, the plumber, cable repair lady, etc.
One last question. Do you get excited when you see a shoulder mount or a euro mount?
How about your family? Which excites them more?
-
the reason i would shoulder mount the ram is because it is bigger than the lotto, i have no problem with you euro mounting it or anybody just eating the thing and ditching the horns
a few years ago a guy i know drew the tag and said it was the best meat he has ever had :cue:
-
I would consider doing a euro if I got one, I think the sheep mounts of californias and rockey mountain bighorns are kinda lame. I would absolutely LOVE sheep hunting, its my dream, but I think the mounts are kinda boring, a dall sheep or stone I think are much more pretty. Am I envited on your sheep hunt bobcat? :)

You could always make a couple bugle tubes or powder horns with them :dunno:

I'd make a fine tobacco pipe! :chuckle:

Now there's a good idea! I could use a powder horn for black powder hunting. :IBCOOL:
-
I think I'll apply for sheep this year too. I'd love to draw with 1 point just to piss everyone off that have butt-loads of points........ :chuckle:
Bobcat, you're most likely not even going to draw anyway..........
-
Don't waste your time applying your just throwing your money to the wind!!

i will do the maceration for ya if you give me your cape lol :chuckle:

I do not understand the meaning behind some of there laws.....oh well.
It is to deter poachers. And more importantly, to prevent the commercialization of our magnificent wild animals and their body parts.

:yeah:
I found a nice Ram skull several years ago. I sure wanted to keep it. But luckily I knew the law and just left it. Sure would have made a nice trophy though......
F'ing poachers sure can screw up things for law abiding people. >:(

Count me in. I couldn't care less about hunting sheep, but I'll apply just to irritate the whiners. :hello:

If you have a valid tag/permit you chould be able to trade a cape for a euro mount to a liscenced Taxidermist. The law is dumb. Makes no sence.
-
I'd do a wall pedistal. Somehow they don't quite seem large enough for floor pedistal, but that would look good too.
I really have come to like wall pedistals. here is my impala-I like the way it gives a different perspective on the mount.

Wow some of you guys must know me better than I know myself! As I said before, I understood that he was telling me I shouldn't apply for a bighorn sheep hunt so that someone else might draw it who would want to get a head mounted for their wall.
You seem to read way more into this than was intended. I'm not sure I could recognize you in a crowd. I only drew my conclusions from your many posts on the odds of drawing various tags.
I did say that if you weren't able to have a mount done or the fact that your wife is opposed to having it your home you maybe let some one else have a chance. Hence a ghost point
And that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'm not going to quit trying for a sheep tag after applying for 15 years. I really can't believe anybody would even say that. I would never tell anybody not to apply for a hunt because I thought I was more deserving of the tag.
I would not discourage you from applying with 15 points either. But with out disclosing how many points I have. I can tell you that I have points built from when the apps took money up front and they sat on it for 4 months and then returned the funds less 5 bucks way back when if not drawn. Also not saying that I am more deserving of the tag than yourself. But you could very well be a close second or third.
For the record I am still in favor of the upfront money as well.
It's actually pretty sad that hunting has come to this. It used to be about putting food on the table. Now to some people it's nothing more than putting a trophy on the wall.
I believe that if you were to poll the forum certain tags on here are considered "Trophy's" in anyones Bucket list.
Moose (Was lucky enough to draw in 08)
Cougar ( was able to fill that last fall)
Sheep (Going to ghost this due to the fact Hunting buddy was drawn for the multi elk.
Goats still hoping
Wolf if by some chance that we ever are allowed to hunt them here.
Not trying to draw lines in the sand just my 2 cent's
-
I would never do a ghost point for sheep or moose. The odds are so low that I feel I need to be in the drawing every year. If I draw one, I'll drop everything else and concentrate on nothing but that tag.
So if you've been applying for sheep since the beginning, you must have 16 points (for this year).
-
I would definitely get a pedestal shoulder mount... Definitely! With that said, I do LOVE Euro mounts. Here is a small sheep we have hanging in our office...

Too bad the Obama /Biden pic is there. It kinda ruins the cool euro mount. :(

Those look great! I really like them. Now if I can just draw that sheep permit!
Not bad odds with 15 points... it's about 1 in 100. How can I NOT draw? :dunno:
