Authorities say they will capture and kill two young wolves from the Imnaha pack in northeastern Oregon due to another confirmed livestock kill.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said an investigation determined a calf carcass found Saturday near Joseph was the product of a wolf kill.
They say nonlethal measures such as electric fences have not kept the pack from livestock :mor:, so lethal controls are in order.
The plan is to capture and kill two sub-adults from the pack, which numbers 10 to 14 wolves. The idea is that will discourage the pack from attacking livestock without affecting breeding.
Two wolves from the same pack were under a state kill order last summer, but that was lifted after conservation groups challenged it.

In Portland last year there was a guy standing outside taking donations to "Save the Timber Wolves" in the Gifford Pinchot. I showed him my 2009 Idaho Wolf Tag.
I'm sure killing those 2 wolves will teach the others in the pack - right?

I hunted the Selway Wilderness for the last 6 years and won't go back due to the declining game opportunities. Wolves have changed everything.

My dad and I used to back country hunt the selway unit when i was younger, there were huge herds in there, you couldn't go a day without hearing at least 5 bulls bugle, haven't been there in 10 years or so, and from what im hearing from you guys and friends that still live there, i don't want to, just plain sucks :(

Also It has been shown in Montana around the park that themajority of wolves will avoid livestock. When depredation does occur taking out the offenders who kill livestock does reduce the possibility of a repeat offense. It is almost always young sub adults that offend.
The nonlethal fencing has also been shown to work, and environmentalist groups will help purchase the fencing for ranchers. The biggest problem is the cost to construct and to round up the cows and put them in the fence every night.
