GARBAGE!!

Kidding......I went in once recently to chat with D-Rock and say hello. Looks like they have a small selection of bows but just about anything and everything else you need. They have a good looking "pro-shop" that you can tell is run by archers who hunt, not just somebody sitting behind a desk. For my needs this is now my first stop shop.

Overall I think you are going to get the best service there compared to any other "box" store in the general area. Maybe a decent experience up north at Wholesale Sports but I don't have any exp with the archery up there. I just know that a shop like that will be able to treat you better in general.

The Nock Point relocated...just off 99 south a little ways. I think it's south anyway of where they were. I've been to the new shop 1 time and they were closed. Much bigger new shop.

My neighbor aka malardman literally just said the other day that he will never  go to vanwinkles again and all his businees is now going to hooked on toys.

He bought a used hoyt bow and stabilizer at van winkles and the stabilizer wasnt working well with the bow so be brought it back and they gave him a hard time about returns....

But i've never been so i just going off what he said...

I do not work for the shop I do spend a lot of time there and have covered some shifts a few times.  When I'm there I try to help out.  I have known Bob (the owner ) a long time he is a good Guy.  The shop is always getting a little bigger every year we have been working on putting lanes down stairs for shooting.  If anyone has any questions about the shop feel free to pm me.  If you have had a bad experience let me know and I will do some @ss kicking down there.

I don't want to insult the place, and I havent been in there since I moved to the east side 5 years ago, but the last two times i was in there were a waste of time and gas.

This might sting a little, but instead of my 2 cents, i will give ya $20.00 worth.
One of the WORST ever customer service experinces or should i say complete lack thereof i have ever had was at van winkles archery.
I do not and will not recommmend them to anyone for anything.
If you are one of there "friends" or good ole boys, or just plinked down money for a bow then they love you, other than that you dont exist, your moneys no good (must not be because they dont talk to you, even acknowledge your in the shop.)
I work in a customer service business, and have my whole life, i have no idea who the 2 guys were working the day i went in there, but if i owned the place i would have let both of them go. Even worse for van winkles was Ladybuckmark was with me and she also would not recommend them to anyone.....
I am actually an easy person to please, and loyal to businesses that treat me well, will even support a business that may not have the best price but the service makes all the difference to me...
Sorry but i would shop a different archery shop than van winkles....

what really sucks is that the nock point isn't much better, although the guy who used to run it is really knowledgeable, when i was a kid I used to take the bus from mukilteo to the nock point when they were still at the gun range right off the freeway and piss away all of my paper route money, but the guy who runs the place was always put off by my presence. good thing for e-bay and mail order or people in Snohomish county would be screwed.

Been to Van Winkles several times. They're a tad steeper than other shops or online but they always have what I need when I go in. Although customer service does lack sometimes, I don't feel that they're rude or standoffish.

But, I recently had a bow set up at Riverside Archery in Mt. Vernon. The owner seemed very knowledgeable and was extremely helpful...worth the trip  :twocents:

talked to the old man in Van Winkles, very nice people, loads of experience for a newb like me, I ended up at Riverside in old Mt Vernon, owner and son, were very helpfull, I bought my bow from them and I get to use there indoor range for free, and there is a new brewery across the street :)

I had a similar experience as above.  I had to walk over and ask for help.  I wasn't impressed with there customer service.  I then drove up to riverside archery in Mt Vernon.  I found the guy and his wife very helpful, so i ended up buying my new bow and all the acessories from him.  Never been back to the other outfit again.  I would recommend Riverside.

I didn't even buy field tips. Yep, a free dozen......CUT & TUNED even! Your choice even special orders.

The furniture shop will even let you use the leather couches a back stops to test the bows they offer.

Just tell them D-Rock said so!

All kidding aside customer service is very important. Hopefully people will get issues resolved and/or find a good "home" shop.

This is second hand, but.... From my understanding Its a family business. The father had a small archery shop and the wife a funature shop. As time went by the archey shop got bigger. I think the son is trying to work/take care of the business. I'm sure there is some family friction that causes havock, not unlike many ohter family businesses.  :twocents:

I'll have to admit that my first time in there was less than stellar, mentioned a friend's bow and her needing arrows and i got 'she needs a new bow' and he was very difficult to get off that track.  She shoots longbow, usually cedar arrows with either field or broadheads.  I am working with a recurve...I'm surprised he could even SEE me after that with the long looks down the nose.

I'm still looking for somewhere to get arrows for each of us.

Haven't been to Van Winkles', but this has been my experience at most local shops when looking for traditional gear/supplies... always get a "you should buy a compound" response.  It's understandable, though - not as many gadgets for stick flingers to purchase, so the business case isn't there for a small outfit to cater to the traditional croud.  I do tend to spend a lot on arrows, though...
I've had good experiences with Riverside, despite limited traditional supplies.  Pretty good folks there.

I bet he hiked alot further for his first buck. He did pass up a nice one pretty early in the hunt though. I think he almost got ran over by some Elk one night while sleeping in the middle of a Elk trail too. I was talking about a hunt in Idaho a few years back. When you see him tell him Steve said hello.

I had a very good experience with the wholesale sports store in Burlington, the young people are very nice to talk to, helpful and friendly. I get my cheap deals on Gold tips there and they do fine with basics.

However, I had a persistent problem with my Martin Sabre and ended up going to Gary at Riverside. He was a master mechanic when it came to figuring the problem out. He figured out that my peep was too low and draw set too short. Slapped on a new cam module, moved the peep and had me shooting better than I ever have.  He watched me shoot and made a few more adjustments. I gained 20 FPS and 20 yd groups that touched!
Time spent = an hour...Charged $11.00

This is why its nice to have a "small" forum where we can actually bring in a rep from the company in question and throw our ideas at them for improvement. Remember kesselrings a few years back enough people on here started whining and eventually the owner heard about it and personally set to setting the store straight.

It would probably be extremely beneficial for D-Rock to have the fellas over there take a look at what people think about them. Let them read it first hand versus just telling them, could end up saving there business in the long run.

I would pay a little extra to go to Riverside.  I have been in Wholesale sports and watched the individuals in the archery shop on several occasions.  They are young and just lack the experience that Gary has.  They get you set up with the equipment, but that’s as far as it goes.  Tuning the bow is another art for many.  Gary has helped by standing over my shoulder making sure all the basic form is good then make corrections to the bow, knocking point, drop away, etc.  Very helpful.  You can save a little else where probably, but I don’t mind spending a little extra for all the help he provides.

Law of business, pick any 2, Low price, Great service, Great quality. You won't find all three ANYWHERE!

Mt vernon is far to drive in a full size truck at $4 a gallon. I'm tired of the spotty service/shotty work I sometimes get at "pro shops"(95% of them anyway) therefore I don't rely on them anymore, unless I have to have something like now.

So I purchased John's, Hoyt Carbon Matrix from him a month or so ago, purchased a new Axcel Armourtech HD at the same time wrist sling, Arrow rest, trigger release, dropped like alot of money there in one day. Went in like 2 weeks ago, To ask for some Carbon Express 350 Hunters he said don't have'em can you order them? nope..? can you get me a Tight spot quiver? no not ordering those either? how long till you get the new Fuse carbon blades are you going to stock them? no cost is to high.... HMMMMMMMMMMM one more shot how bout some Dakota Carbon bow strings custom colors? I can do winners choice..... not what I want!! he did not even remember who I was after selling me his bow!! I went and saw Aaron at Hooked on Toys on my way Turkey hunting talked to him left my bow did everything I wanted had it back in 2 weeks shoots great and I have never even shot a bow! My buisness is now traveling a 100 miles just to do buisness with someone, Who does the job rite and when I walked in the door, he said my name and said you ready for this bad boy ? That is how you get return customers.... :twocents:

the backwoods girl and i went in there to get some items for our archery training this  :chuckle: year and its what i would expect in an archery shop.  As someone else put it they are hunters helping hunters.  they do know their stuff, but are rather quiet and not very helpful if you dont know what you want.  theyn did help us out and we got out of there without spending a ton.
they are handy to my new job so i will go back there for all of my needs.

I have been there about 5 times, and each time i got horrible customer service .A couple of times i walked out after some younger chubby  guy was too busy talking to one of his friends to help me . One time the older guy in the back had to tell the kid to quit talking to one of his buddies and help the customers. Now I wont even go there to buy field points .Now i drive up to Riverside Archery and give Gary all my bussiness , couldnt be happier.
