Since we seem to have a lot of snake, tweety bird, and butterfly pictures running around here lately. I thought we could start a topic about rutting rams. Let's see your rutting ram pictures. Whether chasing or bombing ewes..or maybe man on man comradery. I've shot rams everywhere I can think from the Grand Canyon to South Dakota to our very own Yakima. One thing is the same...rams will be rams. In fact, I've given up hunting in November and December because I devote most of my time to photographing rutting rams. It's the only time of the year they don't stick their rear end to you and put their face in the grass. You could say it's my Passion... Any others?

Why do they always have that look that....I'm going to kick your ass. Must be from draggin their sack around in the rocks and snow. :) You've seen most of my ram shots, I'll see if I missed any.
Do you have any good stone sheep shots? I know you've shot up north a time or two.

That ram is a stud :o
-
That animal just amazes me. How much bigger can you get? Great picture to emphasis the mass.
-
How about a Grand Canyon smaller Ram
-
Here's one!!! ;)
-
Well, since he is only about 8 years old apparently he can get a bit bigger if he grows to 10 or 12 years. I call that type of shot a "shoulders" shot as you can really see the shoulders on a ram from behind. Anyone want to see a bigger ram?
-
Yes please :)
-
Pretty please! :)
-
I took this many years ago with slide film and a crappy lens. He's a tad tighter on the curl but has more mass. This ram reminds me of the 206" ram in the latest issue of Fair Chase. I think his curl is slightly tighter though...

Great photos guys..Thanks for posting. I remember fishing many times in the fall in the lower end of Hell's Canyon and being one of 20 + boats ideling in the current watching a couple rams butt heads. You could hear the crack over all the boats running. Amazing site.
-
pope...is that a back door view of the eastmans ram?
awesome...that pic really puts emphasis on his mass.
-
Ahhh... That should be... it was an amazing sight, not site.
-
Gee thanks, I thought you thought this was an amazing site for all the neat pictures on it. ;)
-
It is Jackelope... I would note that the weakness on that ram (as told to me by people who know) is that he lacks mass and that's his only downfall as his length is great. I don't know, he just looks big to me.
-
Lacks mass....................... :yike:
I've been looking at Cali rams too long if that is true.
-
Well, look at the second ram I posted...the tips are the size of baseball bats. Mr. Big comes to a small point at his tips. Probably because he's really young and only about 8 years old...
-
Wow, guess I havent a clue what I'm looking at, I thought he was massive!
-
You are right Bone, this is a great site for pictures and more, but watching the rams butt heads was a great sight and site all in one....LOL

I posted this rut photo for fun as it is an old one. Notice it is a full size slide scan. In the old days with slides, you had to frame your photo perfectly within the shot and couldn't be off with your exposure by even a half a stop. The slide film was expensive. This was shot with Fuji Velvia and there are no photoshop processes done to the photo but to add my signature. You couldn't go back and sharpen later in the old days. Man I love digital. I think I shot this with a 200mm f2.8. I have always maintained I would rather have a shorter fast lens than a longer slow lens. I can move closer to the animal but I can't make there be more light. I did a lot of photography with a 200mm lens.
I think I shot this with my wife 10 or 12 years ago from the car. I think these are bison range rams. Rams will be rams, pushing and messing with each other.

AWESOME :P

Awesome pics!!! I remember hunting down in the blues outside of Pomeroy up on top of Ables' ridge and walking to the bottom, and seeing several sheep. The first group we were only 50 to 70 yards from them, and they just stood and looked at us. the second set was a little farther down the draw and they were on the other side and there were around 60 of them in the group and we just sat and watched them for over an hour since hunting was a bust for the day. They are amazing animals.

Some amazing pics here. I just wish I could afford the glass to go with my camera to get these kind of shots.
-
Pope...you have some incredible photos...Thanks for sharing.
-
Oh Antlershed... Many of my photos are taken with a $500 Canon 200mm F2.8 L... Not cheap but not expensive.
-
Guess I just need to work on getting closer. :)
-
I could look at pics like that all day
