Lets start posting some pics of this years new antler growth so far so we can see how well their doing in the different areas. Im setting up my trail cams this weekend for a month, so I will post some then. Elk and deer are fine.
-
some cams will go out this weekend
-
Yeah I figured there were quite a few cams just starting to soak, but I wanted to see if there were any pics back yet. We have had quite a bit of rain so im interested if the antler growth is better this year. Ill try to keep this thread alive for awhile so we can start getting some spring 2011 pics.
-
Yea that's a good idea it has been raining alot were going turkey hunting this weekend and I was gonna bring my cam with me and set up with some apples and feeder.
-
Mine's been out since spring break, will be picking it within a week or two when I get back home. Should be some velvet, I'll be sure to get some pictures posted. :)
-
Hey thanks anythings better than what ive got so far!
-
Some of the biggest bucks I have ever scouted have had substantial amount of antler by mid May.. u can begin to see the toads now ;)
-
heres one I got a couple weeks ago, I will be going out to check it again this weekend
-
Was he sticking his tounge out at the camera?
-
nice shot !
-
Haven't been out around CleElum in two weeks but some bulls still had antlers. They better get busy.
-
saw a bull today that was spliting off his 3rds allready.couldn't get a pic cause my batteries died.
-
here is a couple from the mashel unit.
-
Just pulled my first pics of the year today and jumped a group of 4 whitetail bucks 70 yards from my camera site, thats got to be a good sign right? Anyway here is a couple to start with of the first buck on camera. Sorry, I use a cheap camera so not much for picture quality. I'm not good at guessing size this early in the year, anybody have an idea what he will be? I'm in the Oroville WA area.
-
Keep an eye on that guy... his mainbeam length looks like it will be good.
-
:yeah:
-
One little guy.
-
Here is the first Blacktail growth I have seen.
-
Seems like the growth is all about the same. Thanks for sharing, hopefully we get more pics in!
-
heres a couple more from the mashel unit.
-
Those elk have really good growthb so far! Cool pics!
-
grow baby grow
-
Saw my first mule deer velvet today....
-
Its been almost two weeks since I got the first pic of this guy, its cool to see the growth and there is a new buck showing up.
-
Bparcher, those bucks have the most growth ive seen so far this year.
-
Some blacktail deer (the first two were taken on May 12- I cropped them so the date isn't there)
-
I'm not good at judging this early in the year on how big they will be but they sure are starting out nice.
-
Here's a couple from this morning! This is the most growth that I have seen so far.

-
Good looking growth! WOW :)
-
Well I guess Elkslayer takes the cakes so far!
-
I have gotten a few pics of these guys the last few weeks. The dates may be wrong on the pic.
-
Im checking my cameras next weekend hopfully I get some good pics!
-
Good thread! As of today I have 16 mineral sights out and hopefully I can get a few more out tomorrow and drop another cam or two. I am a little behind this year because I was overseas for several months. I only have only had one camera going and if I get a chance I will check it tomorrow. I put another cam out today. I will check it in a couple of weeks and get some pics posted.
-
Here are a couple. First from a couple days ago. Second from today in the back yard. Third of the same deer last October, he's going to be a big one this year.
Any tips on how to post a photo, describe it, then post another?
-
This is off one of the mineral site's I have had out for one week. I had the cam out for two days on one minute delay and had over 240 pics. I wasn't expecting them to hang out in front of the camera for so long. There are two bucks coming in at this time. Here are the pics of the biggest one. He doesn't look like he will be anything special but if he keeps coming in we can track his growth because he has a distinctive split in his left ear.

-
THATS IT GRINGO!! I KNOW WHERE YOU HANG OUT!!! I'LL KEEP AN EYE OUT :chuckle:
-
This guy is a regular now, and he keeps growing well. I wonder if he will ever sprout eyeguards? Here are some pics of him taken over the last month from oldest to today. Sorry dates and times are all screwed up, got cameras from a buddy w/ no directions and Im not the best with electronics.
-
saw these 4 deer swim by us out on the boat at potholes lake. 2 bucks and 2 does. Cell phone pic.

thats an awesome pic
-
:yeah:
-
Checked camera today, some new guys coming in. Here are some highlights. Got mulies and whitetails showing up, must be a good sign right?
-
Like usual the bucks have pretty good growth bparcher. Why dont you change the date on your camera so I can compare the progression of growth in my area to yours?
-
I got the camera from a friend with no directions. They are cheap and there is no obvious button that says "time/date" so I'm still messing with it. If it helps those pics are from today (6/8) and the best i can tell when it says 2300 hours it actually about 1030 hours real time. If you want to go back and compare I check them every Wed/Thur give or take and pulled the first card the first week of May. I hope this helps oldleclericrd!
-
looks like someone should have a good season. good looking main beams.
-
Ok bparcher thanks for the info! The deer in my area seem like they are quite a bit behind your deer! I mean the bucks in your pics have a ton of growth so far! Very cool! Just keep the pics coming!
-
The most growth I have right now...(I have only checked one cam at this point)

NICE...all my cams go out tomorrow and saturday
-
I am putting out most of my cams this weekend too. As of right now I only have one other camera in the field. It has been out for two weeks so hopefully I have some pics.
-
Got one in area of the non typ from last year yet?
-
I have one mineral site but no camera there. Unfortunately they are going to be cutting most of the area where he hung out.
-
oh crappy...might turn into his feeding area ;)
-
I was curious dbhawthorne what kind of pics you were getting this year. I thought your pics from last year with all the bucks in the hay was pretty cool! Some good sized deer in your area! When do you start putting hay out? Rifle season?
-
oh crappy...might turn into his feeding area ;)
I certainly hope so. I would love to see what he grows this year.
-

I usually put out alfalfa in Oct about one month before the late archery season. I have my eye on a few locations where I know some monsters were last year. Hopefully I can get some good pics of a few big ones.
-
Oh thats when I figured. Do you rifle hunt for them?
-
I only bowhunt. I set up one area for a friend of mine to rifle hunt last season. A 150 class buck came in twice during daylight in the rifle season but he wasn't in the blind either time. One time the buck came out at noon and he arrived at his blind 30 minutes later. By the late bow the buck stopped coming in during daylight.
-
With the moisture we are getting and the mild winter..should be poised for some good antler growth..just hope for some July rain
-
I hear you brother. I am thinking the same thing. If it rains a little every day between now and Sept. 1 I will be just fine with that.
-
no kidding ;)
-
Yeah I just bowhunt also. After our wheat harvest then you can have all the rain you want!
-
as many as i saw dead in a two mile streach along 190 through your area the other day should be a good season for db
-
Judging by the pics db posts I think every season is above average compared to most.
-
a couple more from mashel, my buddys cam
-
Here's my first Blacktail buck of the year. Hope to see some forks soon.
-

West sider, nibblin grass, licked a burnt stump a couple times too. Had a little buck running with him. Big bull, Little buck all buddied up, walked across a clearcut side by side, but I couldn't get a picture with both in it at the same time. Someday I'll buy a real camera.
-
Does this count?
Hey thats the first buck ive seen come to your set. Looks like hes pretty decent!
-
Its about time for some new "updated" pics guys! I know you all went to check your cameras this weekend. I dont get to go check mine til July 4th weekend, but it will be a good months soak so im sure its worth it!
-
Heading out tomorrow to get my damn hat and hope to have some fresh pics of my buck for ya.
-
I hope you get some good ones! That hat deal is pretty funny, but I have to agree with your point on the other thread that scent doesnt really have much to do with them coming into your site if your the one bringing the food.
-
I was half way back to the truck when I realised I had left it as well as having an oh S moment when I realised the "where". Pretty much said screw it kept going. Gave me a pretty good reason to go back this weekend.
Ok, enough thread jacking...who's got pics of velvet?
-
Velvet WA bucks. These pics were taken last weekend.
-
All three are nice looking healthy deer. Looks like that one in back may be high and tight and the front one may be a bit wider. Cool.
-
Nice. Those are looking to be some pretty good bucks.
-
It's been fun watching these bucks grow. Getting new visiters every week. The buck I named Browless (first pic) seems to have the most growth to start but he wont be the biggest by Sept.
-
A friend got this pic of a nice blacky in a field over on Decator island the other day. Should be a good one specially since there is still about 3 weeks of antler growing yet.
-

Theres alot more growing to do up in the northeast corner than 3 weeks!
-
3 months maybe...
-
i did a little research on growth last year after i took a pic of a 4pt by chesaw july 2nd. i need to figure out how to post pics but anyhow, my research came up with that deer will grow into sept oct even after the velvet is rubbed off. so there is great potential in soem of these deer. still have 3-4 months to grow and if the feed is good, could have some mashers

I think once the velvet is gone that is their final size. I havent seen any hard horn bucks get any bigger.

I am interested in the source of info that says antler grow into October. I believe you but I am not sure I believe it.
From shed antlers to shed velvet the process takes less than 200 days. Antler growth stops when testosterone levels rise. This is a result of the days getting shorter. At this point the antler is completely mineralized, the blood flow is reduced and the velvet starts to dry. This process begins with the formation of what we call the burr. The pressure created by the burr is what restricts the blood flow. The interior of the antler is mineralized and no long returns blood. In a short period of time (in as little as a few hours) the velvet dies and is removed by the buck.
-
I call BS on this..once hardened there is NO MORE growth! I have thousands of trail cam pics of deer in late July that are done growing as the hardened process begins they might add a inch or 2 from late July to mid August..what u see in August is what you get come Sept.
-
:yeah:
As far as coastal blacktail antler growth slows way down by the beginning of July and done completely by the middle of July on most mature blacktail. Although still in velvet till Sept. never seen one grow more after they start hardening up in mid July.
-
Here's a little guy from Potholes 2 weekends ago...
-
hows this
-
here's a buck in the same spot as the bull
-
I love these, it just gets you fired up!
-
As far as the NE corner is concerned, they have about 2 months to go. However around Ritzville I saw a 4 pt. mulie. In my opinion, different areas of the state have different growing periods. :twocents:
-
@hivito:
Are those pics photoshopped or is it just the camera cause those antlers look transparent to me :dunno:
Anyone else notice this? I'm just saying but nice pics.
-
I also noticed that the edge of the tree was visible through the antler. Figured the critter was moving as the camera was focusing and blended the image? :dunno:
-
Ghost buck
-
Now when I started this thread I was looking for real velvet pics! :chuckle:
-
Yes my brother and I have been stumped by this...
We can't tell if it is a double exposure or what
Here is a picture taken in the day in the same spot of the buck 2 weeks earlier as well as a close up of the bull
I hate to post my first pictures and have people be skeptical....I know I would be!
-
whoops forgot the bull
-
whoops forgot the attachment of the bull again
same bull

-
the three point trying to beat down the spike has been dominating my bait pile peeing on the mineral block and all over the place, and the big guy in the background is my ghost, he will never step directly in front of the cam..
