Title: Any pics of this years velvet?
Post by: oldleclercrd on May 09, 2011, 06:10:45 PM: Lets start posting some pics of this years new antler growth so far so we can see how well their doing in the different areas. Im setting up my trail cams this weekend for a month, so I will post some then. Elk and deer are fine.

We have had quite a bit of rain so im interested if the antler growth is better this year. Ill try to keep this thread alive for awhile so we can start getting some spring 2011 pics.

Anyway here is a couple to start with of the first buck on camera. Sorry, I use a cheap camera so not much for picture quality. I'm not good at guessing size this early in the year, anybody have an idea what he will be? I'm in the Oroville WA area.

I am a little behind this year because I was overseas for several months. I only have only had one camera going and if I get a chance I will check it tomorrow. I put another cam out today. I will check it in a couple of weeks and get some pics posted.

I wasn't expecting them to hang out in front of the camera for so long. There are two bucks coming in at this time. Here are the pics of the biggest one. He doesn't look like he will be anything special but if he keeps coming in we can track his growth because he has a distinctive split in his left ear.

They are cheap and there is no obvious button that says "time/date" so I'm still messing with it. If it helps those pics are from today (6/8) and the best i can tell when it says 2300 hours it actually about 1030 hours real time. If you want to go back and compare I check them every Wed/Thur give or take and pulled the first card the first week of May. I hope this helps oldleclericrd!

I usually put out alfalfa in Oct about one month before the late archery season. I have my eye on a few locations where I know some monsters were last year. Hopefully I can get some good pics of a few big ones.

A 150 class buck came in twice during daylight in the rifle season but he wasn't in the blind either time. One time the buck came out at noon and he arrived at his blind 30 minutes later. By the late bow the buck stopped coming in during daylight.

Big bull, Little buck all buddied up, walked across a clearcut side by side, but I couldn't get a picture with both in it at the same time. Someday I'll buy a real camera.

I think once the velvet is gone that is their final size. I havent seen any hard horn bucks get any bigger.

I am interested in the source of info that says antler grow into October. I believe you but I am not sure I believe it.

From shed antlers to shed velvet the process takes less than 200 days. Antler growth stops when testosterone levels rise. This is a result of the days getting shorter. At this point the antler is completely mineralized, the blood flow is reduced and the velvet starts to dry. This process begins with the formation of what we call the burr. The pressure created by the burr is what restricts the blood flow. The interior of the antler is mineralized and no long returns blood. In a short period of time (in as little as a few hours) the velvet dies and is removed by the buck.

I have thousands of trail cam pics of deer in late July that are done growing as the hardened process begins they might add a inch or 2 from late July to mid August..what u see in August is what you get come Sept.

As far as coastal blacktail antler growth slows way down by the beginning of July and done completely by the middle of July on most mature blacktail. Although still in velvet till Sept. never seen one grow more after they start hardening up in mid July.
