Title: Camping tents
Post by: Mossy on May 11, 2011, 10:46:14 PM
I've had the same coleman for about 8 years, decided to upgrade.  This isn't necessarily for hunting, mainly spring/summer/fall camping.  She wants one with one of those front porches we can store all our gear in.  Any recommendations?

My favorite tent. Plenty of room for two people either on a pad on the ground or two cots inside, plus you have the extra storage under the vestibule out front and out back.

It would depend on how much you want to spend and whether you set it up right out of your car or are packing. One of my buddies has this tent and it's got all kinds of room.http://www.cabelas.com/product/Camping/Tents/View-All-Tents%7C/pc/104795280/c/104779080/sc/105517980/Browning174-Cobble-Mountain-Tent/1166960.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fcamping-tents-view-all-tents%2F_%2FN-1102375%2FNo-48%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105517980%3FWTz_l%3DUnknown%253Bcat104779080%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNP&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104779080%3Bcat105517980 (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Camping/Tents/View-All-Tents%7C/pc/104795280/c/104779080/sc/105517980/Browning174-Cobble-Mountain-Tent/1166960.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fcamping-tents-view-all-tents%2F_%2FN-1102375%2FNo-48%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105517980%3FWTz_l%3DUnknown%253Bcat104779080%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNP&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104779080%3Bcat105517980)

I have a Coleman Lakeside 10x15 and I love it for two people. We have an accordion bed frame with a queen-size air bed and there's still half the tent for chairs and a table. Plenty of storage, but no outside vestibule.

We like our Coleman tent. Sure is roomy! It dose not have a front porch, but we put up a mesh tent to store/ cook out of. Keeps the bees out. We use a mesh tent for a dining area as well.

I need something a little bigger than a two person tent.  We don't pack in so we don't need anything compact.  Gonna need enough room for two cots, gear and dogs.  Wanna stay around $200

REI does have some good tents especially during their garage sales. I purchased a brand new one that was half price because the first owner couldn't read instructions and set it up. Has a nice Vestibule.

I have had a Coleman Weathermaster 12 x 18 ft tent for over ten years. My zippers broke last year. Up till then it was a great tent. now I am also looking for a replacements for my tent. Personally I would not get a tent that had a screened porch. They do not do that great in weather, and I do not want to worry about leaving things in the vestibule and getting stolen. I would rather have more interior room. I like the new "D" doors that the new Colemans have. The door zippers are by far the weakest part in the tents I have owned. Rasbo bought a nice family sized tent recently (I can't remember the name) when you find one you like, search Cabelas and Amazon for that tent, then read the reviews.

I like the idea of the D doors as well but reviews on the doors are poor, they don't line up right.  I also see the attachments are velcro which I would assume would lose their hold after awhile BUT you can still go back to the zipper.
These have decent reviews but with a screen porch as well.

Maybe Rasbo can chime in on what he picked up recently.  If it was up to me, I would get a lightweight 4 person tent with stitched seams but apparently those don't exist anymore unless you want to drop some bills.

That sucks about the "D" doors, I had high hopes.

I believw this is the one Rasbo bought, I can't remember what size his is though.

Where did you get your zippers redone! I called Coleman and they said everything is made in Taiwan now and they do not sell replacement parts.  :bash:
If I could get the zippers sown I could get years more out of this tent.

That thing is HUGE!  I went to cabelas this weekend to take a look, they had one set up, unfortunately we don't need the biggest size, they didn't have any 4 or 6 man ones.
And Alchase, they didn't have the other one you posted that you were looking at.  I had high hopes of coming home with one but decided to wait.

We're pretty close to buying this one: http://bit.ly/lP4SG6 (http://bit.ly/lP4SG6) Being able to set it up by myself, in the dark is pretty darned appealing. Plus we have a baby and all her gear, so we need the bigger size...

Be advised, I have personally seen two different "instant tents" colapse! One was in Winthrop during hunting season. The other was at Sunlakes State Park with minimal wind.

Yeah, I worry about  that too, especially with a little snow/wind... That's why I'm leaning (pun intended?) toward the Columbia. It's the same rigging as the 10x10 shelter I have, which has held up wonderfully.

as far as getting rezipped,we used a little asain taylor shop in kenn. i'll have to ask the wife later, they charged by the foot & did a good job. the last one was a heavy duty plastic unit. if i can get the poles straightend out after last seasons storm i'll be using this tent again next season.

I wanted to quickly followup on this thread. I bought the Coleman I linked to above this weekend. And, it sets up in a minute as advertised. Stowing is great as well as you just collapse the poles and then wad it up. It's not an intricate work of origami like our other tent.

Taking it out this weekend to see how it does in Pend Oreille.

There's a 10x16 Coleman Weathermaster on special at Costco this month for 145.00. If I needed a tent, that would be it.

Thanks for the heads up.  I took my old coleman out this past weekend cause I couldn't find anything I wanted in time.  One thing I did notice that I still want is the tub style tarp bottom because it hasn't leaked a bit.  Probably a better rain fly to cover the windows.  Another problem is the dog.  Hair all over the place so two rooms would be good.

Zipper issues - I was able to find two company's that specialize in tent (zipper) repair. The first one is Tacoma Tent and Awning and the second (recommended by REI and where they send there tents for work) is Rainy Pass Repair. It was to late last night to get prices, I will post back when I get estimates.

Well that did not work well, both places the prices to fix zippers was insane!

Rainy Pass = $17.00 "a foot"!!!
Tacoma Tent and Awning = $100.00 per zipper!! x two zippers that is more then the friggn tent.

I wish I was still a member, would almost be worth the drive...
I am looking for a tent (or 2) for our family, probably going to take a chance on a Northwest Territory Front Porch Tent.
should fit me, the wife, and 3 kids and all the junk the wife always thinks we need..
