So I like to drive ALOT of miles for hunting and since we are well on our way to $4++ gas, I have been thinking about alternative hunting set ups. I was kind of surprised at the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger mileages. For some reason I had it in my head they were alot better then what they really are. I looked at one of the mileage comparison charts and the VW Jetta Sportswagon gets mid 40 mpg. I was thinking I could turn that into a heck of a nice hunting rig. Pull a trailer with a four wheeler maybe. I could rig the back up for sleeping or just camp out of the car and hike more. OR I was thinking about something like the BMW 1200 GS ADV motorcycle and pull a small trailer with one of those. At 50 mpg I could do some serious miles and the thing is built to go alot of places highway or gravel roads no problem. Get an animal I could either call the wife to bring the big rig or drive home and come back and get it. What are some of you guys thoughts on alternative vehicles.

It's a good thing to consider, but the bottom is about to fall out of the oil market, so don't be too quick in making a move just yet.
-
You think so?
-
i got myslef an older subaru legacy wagon. its 4 wheel drive,... so it can get me anywhere i wanna go. and it gets about 30 mpg in the city. much better than 10mpg on my truck
-
I was looking at the Subaru Bajas but heck they only average about the same mpg as the Tacomas.

The barrel price of crude has is trading down 20% to $98 from just a week ago at $115. Gasoline use in the US has dropped almost 10% from 6 months ago and OPEC is losing it's mind. BP stock fell 2.5% yesterday, as did all of the other oil companies. The crude price has been very inflated because of speculators and is now adjusting to match true cost. We should see crude continue to fall to as low as $70, possibly within two months. The one mitigating factor in this is if OPEC decides to leave the US dollar. Oil prices will drop worldwide, but our inflation at that point will be so drastic that everything will go up, including oil. This is a real concern.
-
Gotcha, by the way I like your avatar photo! I just sold my 1998 Ford Ranger. It had 241,000 miles on it and was starting to fall apart. So I am in the market for a new hunting rig. The F250 is NOT cutting it, plus I only have that to pull the mules in the horse trailer. Shoot just to take the brumbies to the mountains for a day ride is $150. :'(
-
My buddy has a GS1200 BMW and that is one cool motorcycle. It is, however, giant...big enough to cause issues in the woods because it's so big and heavy.

This might not be a bad option for you, it is ready for off road use.
I don't see an easy way to hitch up a trailer however :chuckle:
-
If you buy a VW be sure you have towing on your insurance or have AAA. I make A LOT of money on VW/Audi :twocents:

SWEEET quadrafire! :chuckle:
-
I feel ya......I just sold my 1992 Toyota Alltrac wagon and wish I could have afforded to fix it.....We used it this last year for our trip to the eastside for the modern firearm deer opener.....We had that thing packed to the gills and she was squatting a bit but still got 24 MPG avg......I am thinking about trying to get a subaru or small wagon or truck before this years hunt...My explorer gets 15mpg and my F-150 with a 6 cyl 5 spd gets 18 or so..........If gas prices dont go down soon, I may be stuck hunting the wet side of the state......
-
:)When I add in the cost of extra insurance and maintenance, it does not pay to get another rig. I get 18 over all and 22 highway with my full size 4x4 chev PU. and it pulls my trailer too.

I have an 85 Subaru brat 30+ mpg.. Its the older wagons that have the best milage, mainly because they have less of the emissions crap, not to mention the light weight. Here is a forum that I visit regarding Subaru's.
http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/ (http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/) The vintage you are looking for is 1980-1995 ish Most runners can be had Cheep, couple thousand bucks, are easy to fix, and since they have a cult following all important info is available on the web. To replace ANY PART on the Gen 1 Subaru all you need is a $9 harbor freight metric wrench set, and 3 sockets and a half inch ratchet... Pair of vise grips, pliers and a couple of screw drivers are all you need. Winches are not necessary, however cheep ATV 3000lbs ones normally work. Most of them weigh in right at 2000lbs. You can pack all your gear in a wagon plus they nearly all have roof racks... I think it you could think of it as a wheeling/hunting rig. If you can afford a ATV you can afford a pimped out Subaru. :twocents:

dont buy a tacoma to save gas. I have a 96 with a 4cyl 2.7 liter and get 15 in town and 18 on the hwy.

Something has to be wrong or something...My buddy has a 98' with the 3.4 and he only drives around town ( rarely on the HWY) and he is averaging 18 in town......
-
Have to agree with jmoyer2, don't get a Tacoma. Have a 96 Tacoma and lucky to get 15 mpg. Have 2004 chevy duramax and get 18 mpg around town. Also gas dropped 12 cents a gallon in Raymond today,

I was looking at the Subaru Bajas but heck they only average about the same mpg as the Tacomas.
don't know about the Tacomas but I did pick up a Baja. doesn't get great mileage, 27-28 but better than any of my 4WDs.

I'm with all of you about gas price. I'm wondering what is the mpg when you build it up like this one.

Is your brat a 2wd or 4wd? The 4wd only rated up to 28 mpg.

dont buy a tacoma to save gas. I have a 96 with a 4cyl 2.7 liter and get 15 in town and 18 on the hwy.
My 3.4l equipped 98' gets 15mpg in 4wd driving just around town in the snow. Something is either wrong with yours or you are driving it pretty aggressively.
As far as the older Subies getting better mileage goes, it's due to that old 1.8l motor that didn't make any power! The later ones still get 25+ but they have some real balls, the older ones make me want to get out and push on hills...

maybe better qualify, I live way out in Pend Oreille county & 85-90% of my driving is hwy. so maybe thats the difference

Maybe, i dunno. It has 221k on it and has been an absolutely bulletproof truck. I love it but the gas mileage is horrible. I have had a few people that have the four banger as well tell me that the 3.4 six gets better gas mileage because it doesnt work as hard. I have to be in 3rd gear @5k RPM to maintain 60 on a hill.

You dont happen to know where to get an automatic seatbelt for cheap for a 93 legacy do you? :P
I'll have to check that site out.

Swanny, I do not know but you could find out on that board. As far as 28 mpg vs 30.. let me tell you that it isn't that hard to get it, or damn close. My brother and his buddies have had 30 of them. Here is the one weakness they all have. When your buying a used one listen for an exhaust leak... they have aluminum heads, and when people rally a stock one over something and hang the exhaust up on something the first thing that happens is the head bolts get loose. :twocents: A skid plate and custom exhaust with smooth welded pipe and no bolts will save ya... I am told by a local guru that the gen 2 (hard angle body style) has a better/stronger dive train. The gen 1 have the high low range tranny and E81 aircraft engine.. best made... And don't let the Rednecks with trucks give you any grief! you pay less in fuel, can go anywhere they do(nearly) and have more $$$ at the end of the day for gear and beer!

I had a 99 Tacoma extra cab 4x4 w/2.7 5spd 31" tires and avg 22-23mpg hwy and 17-18mpg city.

Hmm... You had me thinking whether to ditch my Isuzu Pup for this or not. I've been driving my Pup all these years and it has 32" BFG on it now.
-
Me and shanevg are using his wifes suburu, gets great milage, and does the job. We just use my truck on the rougher roads where we need clearance.
-
I have to be in 3rd gear @5k RPM to maintain 60 on a hill.
This is the problem with your tacoma's mileage, try driving it like you like the truck instead of like you stole it!
-
yajsab If its a diesel than i wouldn't! I have often wondered about that engine. If it has the same kind of diesel as the airconditioner for the reefer trailers. I need to spend some timeand see what the tranny combo those pups made, because i sure would like to b=put a little diesel in a jeep, or small truck. What vintage is your pup? Found any good sites that share info?

Unfortunately, I have the gas version. But according to my calculation, I get about 20 mpg with the 32" tires. I only used about 1 tank of gas round trip for hunting, so I don't know if I need to switch.
Mine is a 1989 and a friend has a 1991 with the same 2.6l engine.
I usually talk to guys over at www.4x4wire.com (http://www.4x4wire.com).
-
We usually drive my 94 toyota 4x4 with the 3ltr v6 that gets around 15-16 mpgs. Thinking about driving my commuter more though. Its a 96 2wd sidekick that gets around 35mpg and either towing a small utility trailer or getting one of those hitch carrier platforms.
-
If you want a toyota find a rig with a 22re. I had a 86 4 runner. I loved that thing. wish I never sold it. Got between 25 and 30 depending on how I had my tires inflated.

prices at the pump probly wont drop that much tho, $70 a barrel just means more of a profit per gallon for fuel companies and they name the price of what they are going to pay, a huge part of oil prices here goes off what the dollar is worth and its devalues more every day which means the less the dollar is worth the more a barrel cost, oil isnt worth any more than it has been it just takes more american dollars to buy it now

There is nothing wrong with Jmoyer's truck. I have a 96' Tacoma 2.7L 5speed manual 4x4 and I only average 18-19mpg city and highway combined.
The new 2011 model for this same truck is only rated 18 in town and 20 highway. The 4.0L V6 5Speed manual 4x4 is 14/18 and that is straight from Toyota's website...
-
I've had a '02 Tacoma, xtra cab, w/ 3.4, and got about 15-19 mpg. My 91 with the 22re got the same. Some days you would get very low 20's... But the stars had to align just right! Worse I got with the 02 was when pulling my sled, got 11 mpg....

He already complained that he had to run the motor at 5k in 3rd gear to maintain 60mph on hills...I am betting if he didn't drive it like he stole it that a noticeable improvement in mileage would be attained.

Matt and I were just up in BC doing some bear hunting and the first guide we were with had Geo Trackers for his hunting rigs. I never would have picked them as hunting vehicles, but with a little lift and some gnarly tires they went EVERYWHERE. Its pretty much like an ATV with 4 doors and a heater. And we'd go through maybe 5 gallons of gas in an 8 to 10 hour hunting day. Just something to think about... Your buddies might give you some crap when you roll up in one, but they won't when you bomb up some tiny skid trail their Super Duty can't fit on :IBCOOL:

I know more than 1 person that has traded their 4x4 truck for a hunting rig that is outside of the box. Subaru, Geo tracker, Mits Montoya, they might not make your rooster feel big but they get the job done and haul you and your animal for half the cost of most full size rigs... I wish i could afford to donate a bunch of $$$ to the oil companies to dive a fuel guzzler, but not anymore! :bash:

Nice grass burner

Well I have a slightly different model than that one, longer ears, but getting the hay burner to the hunting area is getting to the point I need to make an appointment with the loan officer everytime I want to pull the trailer anywhere! ;)

my jeep liberty CRD (diesel) is getting 30-35 miles a gallon. I was driving a suzuki sidekick prior the jeep and was getting in the 20s. The liberty CRD will tow 5000 LBS and has a tounge weight of 750lbs. I like mine a lot, it handles well, parks easy, has a lot of storage area and moves very well on the highway.

I'm VERY disapointed in our Fed Gov and our auto industry for not embracing Deisel technology. Gone are the days of loud smoke beltching rides. Common rail technology has changed everything so much in the world of deisel. I'm surprised that the "Man" cannot see the vast benifits over gasoline... Many manufactures already have AWSOME engines but cannot sell them her due to the EPA or Union hangups. I know my wifes Ford Focus is offerd with a deisel that gets in the neighborhood of 55+mpg for the same ride as her gas that gets 32mpg. :bash: Dodge has the I-5 that is in thier sprint vans, the liberty engine has the I-4 variable pitch turbo. VW has had thier engine in the Jetta for EVER... Toyota has some pretty good ones in thier Hilux 4x4 that gets 35mpg but cannot be offered in the USA. Just ask anyone that works at a refinery, you get 1/3 more deisel per barrel compared to gasoline! :bash: I have long thought about taking the industrial motor from a semi refer trailer, Isuzu or Cummins and putting it in a small 4x4. I know in the mid west they put a lot of tractor motors in Chev half tons... And all this could be done with the stroke of a pen. :bash:
-
Drop a little Turbo Diesel into Samurai or Sidekick and you have one awesome hunting rig.
-
There is actually a kit available to take a older jetta motor and do just that. and yes they are sweet!
-
Exactly and guys usually get 30-40 mpg out of those little diesel beast.

I found mine on craigslist. If you get a samurai with a stock engine and plan on using it on the road much I recommend staying close to stock with the tires. The stock engine won't turn the big tires very fast even with different gearing.

I've had a lot of 4 x 4's but my Bronco II of 10 years has beat all of them hands down in the woods - Small turning radius - I have heavy winter tread lugs with studs and I have been in the high country pushing snow with my bumper and not get stuck !! Around 20 mpg. You look around and you can find them for sale for under $2000.00 .

Bumping an old thread
My "new " 1988 Suzuki Samurai, picked it up today for around the farm and hunting/fishing

I think the Samuri, tracker, sidekicks are the perfect size for a dedicated hunting light wheeling exploring rig. These 2 trackers are guys from the club. You can buy them cheap enough and there are some sweet mods that can be done to make them more capable.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170413/d6cec5379922a621b81a106902bfd8b9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170413/f2b3545b58615b2518e9bca920edb6bc.jpg)
