Well I set 2 of my trail cams up this weekend. One is a flashcam and the other is a Infared. I picked 2 different locations within about 2 miles from eachother. Last year was my first year setting up my flash cam and I had some deer pics on it and a few elk. I never did put any bait out last year in front of my flash cam. This year I have bait out and plan on checking and refueling the sites on July 4th and then again in mid August (a couple of weeks before bow opens up). I plan on updating my pics as the year progresses.
This is a pic of what ill be putting out. Each bait site will start out with a 50# bag of mineral salt with selenium, a 50# block of mineral salt with selenium, and a 50# bag of wet cob (corn, oat, barley, and molasses mix).
-
Cool, bring on the pics.

Hey your the one who inspired me to do this play by play thread. I was gonna post some on your thread, but I didnt want to take over, so I started my own. Anyways, we'll have your westside and my eastside pics.
-
Does it work best to put your bait into the ground, dig down a little and allow it to soak into the dirt? and Why? I am still new to this bait and cam stuff and I am still learning new ways. Thanks
-
Well ill be honest, I havent put the minerals out before. I know the bag of mineral salt soaks in the ground and they will make quite the hole getting every last bit. I think I maybe could have buried the salt, but its my first time so im sure ill make mistakes. The block however, is sitting on a flat rock so it doesnt draw as much moisture from the ground and maybe lasts longer. I put the two different mineral methods out (the granular and the salt block) to see which lasts longer and which one they like better.
-
nice! should be getting alot of pics, i just set my cam out tonight and didnt make it out soon enough to get any feed or salt blocks, so ill be heading out in two weeks change out the batteries and bait it up!
-
Glad to have you following along on my thread as well. I look forward to seeing some pics. It is a good time when you start getting animal into your spot. Soon, I'll begin working on my shooting lanes. Keep watching and I'll do the same on yours.

Sounds good. Yeah on my last check in August I will hang my stand and by that time I should have a pretty good idea of where the trails are.
-
How far is you stand from a road or quad trail if legal? The reason I ask is my spot is just under a mile from the gate. I'm thinking of taking a kids snow sled, one of the longer ones and trying it to a tree standing on end. Then I'd simply paint the bottom camo to blend in and leave it until I need to drag my deer out. I've got my corner all picked out to shoot from. Are you shooting bow or rifle?

My flash cam site is only about 1/4 mile from the road, but its not much of a road. My IR cam is about 1/2 mile from the road. The reason I didnt go any farther is because I might want to bring a bale of alfalfa out there some day and I dont want to make it impossible. I figure if I carry a half bale with my external pack frame or even use a sled (your idea) I might be able to make it happen. I like the sled idea. I shoot bow.
-
I like the sled as well. I did a trip with my kids wagon, two cases of apples, one bag of cob, and one bag of cob on my back. NOT doing that again. However the slet is lighter and cheaper if I trash it.
-
Yeah thats true. I wonder how well a game cart would work for hauling stuff in and hopefully out. They even fold down so you can hide it under some brush if you want to leave it there. Those carts have some clearence with the taller tires so they can clear logs and stuff on the way.
-
Game cart = $$$$$$
Sled = $
-
I hear ya! Maybe ill have to put it on my christmas list!
-

Thats what I thought (no hump on the back), but I just wanted to see what everyone else thought.
-
Hey that is a Traeger bear right there! Nice Pictures

I know that bear is a cool one, but needs a couple more years on him.
-
This Big 5x5 showed up!
-
nice buck!
-
This is a big 4x5 that I have seen before
-
Few other pics...
-
great pics..lotta bucks. looks like boo boo :chuckle:
-
Looks like your doing good there Brent. I got a question for ya. Do you have all three (salt block, salt and cob) at your camera locations. I usually use a block and bagged salt but have yet to use cob. Looks like the bears like it.
I set my cams out on memorial day weekend but have yet to get back to check them. All work and no play makes me a very grumpy man. :chuckle: :bash:
-
One thing I have noticed this year is my salts alone are not working very well.. I have watched bucks within 100 yards or less of my salt locations and hve yet to get pics of them. Feed helps a ton such as sweet mix and when apples become available those will bring every deer in
-
Awesome!
-
I am using mineral salt with selenium (thanks Devin), and wet cob. The cob is spendy but works so good! I agree the apples will be a nice addition soon!

Well that' interesting....any thoughts on why. Shane, do you use cob or have you thought about using some other kind of feed attractant? Just curious. I may head over in a few weeks and might take something else over....like I said before, I have only used salt or minirel blocks.
-
I am using 1 part mixing salt/2 part trace mineral with selenium/1 part dicalcium phosphate (mixed into the soil. And the deer were hitting it really well long before I put the feed out. However, it had to be in a spot they were already using heavily. If it was in an area that I chose just because I thought it looked nice for a treestand set-up then they only hit it mildly.
-
Alfalfa works great and goes along ways for the price..even better if the animals dont have access to alfalfa fields in the area. Apples around here are free once they are ready..just have to pick them. COB is great, but gets spendy and the bears LOVE it. Starting a salt now could be a hit or miss with whats actually in the area...like mine and few buddys are not getting all the deer in the area on their cams with licks alone. I have a lick I started in March.. a cam hanging on it since late may and this last week when I checked it a new buck was on it.
-
Really like the variety of animals your getting on your cameras. Some good bucks also
-
Nice bucks.
No more elk pics?
-
Well I got a few pics of a 4pt. bull elk on my other camera, but it seems the bears have moved in...
-
It sucks when bears move in and take over the baited area. :bash:
-

That is the main reason I have not used cob yet. I may throw out some alfalfa though at the privite land cam sites.
-
Here are some pics from my other camera that the bears kinda took over.
-
Here are the trouble makers...
-
I hate to ask a dumb question but are we looking at a grizzly and a black bear together in that one picture?
-

No im pretty sure its a red bear. The one that really looks like a grizzly is that blonde bear on the last page, but I just think its a blonde phase. Anyone want to go bear hunting :chuckle: I sure wish we could hunt bears over bait to thin em out a little! :bash:
-

I literally have bear hit any spot that I put out bait. Last year I even had them in areas bordering Spokane city limits. I can't afford to feed them so if they keep this up I wont' be baiting for much longer. They will literally camp out on the bait and keep every other animal away.

I hear ya about the price of feed! What about just putting out minerals until the bears lose interest? One of these days I would be interested in your mineral mix recipe DB. Maybe PM me when you get a chance some day. I have minerals out but I think I read somewhere you add calcium. Interested how it works, thanks.
-
moose are just as bad for keeping deer out,but dont eat the feed.. we have moose in places that lay there for 8 hrs a day!
-
Wow
-

:yeah:
So true. Last year a cow moose found my salt lick and it stayed there a whole day and night and then returned again the next afternoon to repeat the process. >:(
-
Great pics i like the one where the bull is bedded right on the salt licks. But the blonde/reddish bear is dandy, sow or boar
-
If were thinking of the same bear with the big gut standing next to the black bear than yeah I think its a boar, but im no bear expert.
-
New pics. 2 new bucks, a 7x5, and a 5x5 with one eye. 1750 pics in 6 days...
-
Few more...
-
Sweet pics. You definitely got yourself a good deer spot right there
It seems you have more than one legal buck for you. Want to share with a brother? :chuckle:
-
Yeah it sure looks like a good spot now, but we'll see how many show up during hunting season. :chuckle:

Its been awhile since I got a chance to post some pics, but here they are.
-
The bears...
-
More pics of the bear. My wife kept asking me how I could tell the difference between male and female bears. I think she got her answer.
-
This is my other camera. Not quite as productive but cool pics...
-
wow!!! those are some awesome pics.. you should end up with a niiice deer!
-
Great pics! Nice work!

Great pics! Seeing the timber up there makes me fired up for elk season... I cant wait to get back up there and creep up on a monster bull. Thanks for sharing.

Shouldn't one of those deer be called "Big 6"?

And a good spot it is! Checked my camera monday, and had 4 pictures of tall Thistle bushes. Cut an area down in front of the camera just in case something small is triggering it.

How high up is your camera?
-
About 3 feet. Can't get it higher--it's lagged into a scrubby tree that's about 5" thick at the camera. It's been a good spot until the thistles got high.
-
Those are some great pics! I can't wait to see what you tag out with!!

I would got to the store and get one of the pre-mixed spray roundup bottles and kill all the weeds in front of it if they get to bad.
-
I will be checking my cameras on Sunday and will hopefully get some more pics posted up. Is anyone seeing bucks without their velvet yet?
-
So far, all my Mulies have been in velvet. I checxk my cam on mondays, so I'll see what I get--if anything.... :o
-
Hopefully you get something in there. Seems like where im at the antlers are hard and have been for awhile. Im guessing when I check my cameras on sunday I might see some bucks without velvet.
