ELK CITY, Idaho -- Deputies in northcentral Idaho are getting the go-ahead from wildlife officials to take a bead on wolves that have been reported killing dogs and livestock in Elk City.

The Lewiston Tribune reports the Department of Fish and Game will authorize Idaho County sheriff's deputies to kill a pack of about seven wolves that have been frequenting this tiny mountain town in the Nez Perce National Forest.

Residents of this hamlet of 2,000 at the end of State Highway 14 say the wolves have become habituated to humans.

Fish and Game regional supervisor Dave Cadwallader says the pack has been "hanging in and around town."

Cadwallader says it's getting too close for comfort, so he's issuing the kill permits to two Elk City deputies and other Fish and Game officers.
