Lot's to do before then..
-
Absolutely awesome youtube video. That freaking rocks.
-
thanks timber
-
Holy crap man! Sweet video! U sure worked for that one!
-
Thats a dandy Bull from one hell of a hell hole. :chuckle: thats the only way to get the big boys. Nice job
-
Its funny because you can be "in shape" but that doesn't mean that you are in "elk shape". I consider myself to be in good shape but as soon as I hit the hills, I am humbled pretty quickly.
-
You worked your a$$ off for that one, but it was worth it. I'm jealous awesome bull!! :yike:
-
Absolutely awesome youtube video. That freaking rocks.
:yeah:

:yeah:
:yeah: X 2 - that was fantastic. GREAT work.
-
No ! Not in elk shape, time to start. I keep telling myself I have to much work to do but really I could fit it in. MIke
Cool video, Thanks.
-
I stay in Elk shape year round. I have found that it is way easier to STAY IN shape then to GET INTO shape.
Elliptical 3-4 nights a week + lift weights 2-3 nights a week. I also throw in some weighted pack hiking and Alumni basketball.
I don't care what anyone says though half of the battle is mental. If you don't have what it takes up stairs no amount of training will get you up the hill.
-
Travis you are absolutely an ANIMAL !! That is bad ass video man!!
-
I am getting there. Lost 6 pounds last two weeks. great video
-
Nice bull!
-
makes my legs and lungs burn just watching that video! Hell ya!!!
-
just watched that video again. Now I know exactly where you got that elk. saw some familiar things. especially where you parked your truck. LOL. I saw a nice one in that area scouting. never saw him during the season thou.

Weights and Cardio 5 days a week and have not touched any Alchohol in 6 weeks. Gonna join a Cross fit program in July to really set it off for the high country. It is amazing how my body has reacted to no alchohol, I have noticed more lean muscle and lost 6lbs from my mid section. Not gonna have a drink till the Montana bull hits the ground. 17 years of drinking and stopped cold turkey with no cravings or side effects. Just a "elkaholic" now. Bring it!
-
damn man! nice freaking bull! hard work pays off
-
Nice work and BA video. But i have two word for ya SALT and PEPPER. :cue:
-
I was ready yesterday! Let the season begin.
-
ive been chopping a lot of firewood and doing the stair climber at the gym. Thats all it takes 8)
-
As a matter of fact, after getting to an all time high of 215 lbs over the winter I bought a treadmill and started watching what I eat, mainly not eating fastfood. Since buying the mill on Mar 3rd and barely being able to run a half mile, I'm now running 3 to 6 miles 5 days a week and I've dropped 27 lbs. with about 15 to 20 to go. Heading to Alaska in 2 weeks for my summer job where I always lose about 10 pounds. Bring on elk season. :chuckle:
-
Started running, biking, and packing this week, after what seemed to be the longest drawn out winter. Needless to say, I'm on the couch in pain today!!!! 15 weeks to go... Bring it on!
-
i wish we would have got video of us packing buckluckys bull out, the hill he shot it on was so steep i had to go on all fours to power through a big patch of tag alder. but at least he didn't die in the very bottom because that extra 10' might have killed us :chuckle:
-
i just wait till huntn season then kill somethn then bitch and complain about being outta shape and then say next year i am gettn in shape... been sayn it for 30 years
-
That is an awesome video but I have to say I think I prefer the pack that Ross had with his bull ;)
Round is a shape right :dunno:
-
I am getting there. I quit drinking all pop 3 weeks ago and have been running 3 times a week and hitting the gym. Trying to go hard if my right knee hangs in there this year.
-
I usually am in good shape. But this year i have put on about 10 lbs. I cant find the energy to get motivated after 11 hours of work a day then the rest of the hustle and bustle. What do you take for energy or to get motivated????
-
That is the coolest thing.. Great job
-

Im in the same boat, hard to get motivated. Any spair time I could be out hiking is usually spent doing the "Right thing" and working in the taxidermy shop. Im only up 5 pounds but man my legs are week. Went for a 6 mile bonzai hike the other day and was feeling it pretty good. I better start hiking with some weight.
-
elk shape! yea right. I dont think I could pack a chipmunk out of that hole ! I better get on the workout clothes and lose this winter layer of jelly.
-
hell Im still packing thanksgiving around
-
elk shape! yea right. I dont think I could pack a chipmunk out of that hole !
:chuckle: :chuckle: :yeah: that is the best response so far :chuckle: :chuckle:
-

:chuckle: :chuckle: :yeah: that is the best response so far :chuckle: :chuckle:
:yeah:
Id have a hard time packing myself out of that hole :bash:
-
been lifting for 4 months, and the last few have been doing more cardio. i'm plenty good to run the hills all day with a light pack, but where i have a hard time is muscleing out a quarter elk. thats my goal for this year, im pretty skinny and need that lower strength
awesome video bowsandhose, i can get an idea of what thats like. atleast with the meat pack it doesnt shift on your back, but the head and horns are a real bitch to pack cross country.... espescially when they're that big lol
-

i take a sublingual B-12 vitamin for energy. as for motivation that's a tough one to keep up if i eat like crap, or drink to much, or have rough day at work and so on i lose motovation, but if you can fight through it and you start losing weight and looking better feeling stronger then its easy to get motivated
-

i tried every way possible to get the rack on the pack and secure but that was the only way it was not dragging on the ground or stabbing me lol but a shifting load was a pain in the arse
-
Hell to the No! I am out for awhile with a torn meniscus in the left knee :bash: Go in on Monday to schedule for surgery to repair my knee. Been on a diet for about 2 months and lost 15 lbs. Now I need to watch it closer since I'll be on my arse for about another 2- 4 weeks to recover. Once I can get my legs under me I'll be doing what I can to gain the strength back in my legs and start running for that all elusive Cardio that fails me when I need it during the pack out!
-
Very inspiring. Thanks for sharin'.
-
not even close, a cast on my busted foot for 8 weeks, them limited activity. so i just got started with my walking/running routine. the dogs and i both strapped on a few pounds.
-
Its better if you stay in shape and maintain than it is to get back into shape
-
getting closer. im on my last week of p90x and for the past 2 weeks ive been running 2.5 miles every other night on top of the p90x workouts. gone up hiking around a couple times this year, first time did about 8 miles, yesterday i put on closer to 15 miles. not a ton of elevation change but a few hundred feet up and down a couple times.
the weird thing is after hiking for most of the day my right hip has started acting up and snapping and popping a ton. and it will be sore for a couple days after. any idea what this could be? im hoping its just not used to being used that much and will go away after a few more trips.
-
Round is a shape, right?
-
As a matter of fact, yes it is, and a personal favorite of mine :)
-
I will get in shape next week, heading to the blues for 5 days ..... hope i make it out alive :chuckle:
-
Bowsandhose,
Great video, and great bull. No easy way to do those big racks. I like to angle them down a little more, but it looked like it would've been stabbing you in the legs had you done so. Also, I like to roll up the cape and lash it to the brow tines so it's not swinging/hanging there.
Hopefully my pack will look like that come September!
-
I will get in shape next week, heading to the blues for 5 days ..... hope i make it out alive :chuckle:
It's steep!

Downhill with ten guys is hard to beat, thanks again Jim
-
I'm in no where near the shape I was in last fall. I've gained 14lbs in 4months, and lost all intrest in getting back in shape.
My wife asked me , "what would it take for you to get back in shape?"
Me: " nothing rite now, Hunting don't start untill October."
Maybe if the drawing results produce a tag for me or my son, I'll get the hunger back.
:P
-
Yes all ready! being 18 years old, I would gladly pack out a big old bull this september ;)
-
I like where your heads at!!!!
Let the jitters begin.
I been packin 8 month old twins everywhere....I am definately ready to pack something else!
Too bad it's always a GIANT 1x1
-
Nice video Travis, I'm sure anyone who's ever had that kind of awkward load on their back felt your pain.
-
Nice vid Travis! You and your Dad have got some Awesome memories from your trips! I'll just take a look at that vid if I don't feel like running somedays this summer. I only did a 4 mile run yesterday, but thats a lot for me, it was hilly though. I'm still trying to improve. How long (mileage and time) and how many trips on that pack out?
No more lifting for me, I am just working cardio and stretching for my back and legs. I'll do what exercises i can do with body weight (push ups, lunges, pull ups etc)
-
You guys wanting to get into shape need a little CrossFit a few times a week. Its a total strength and conditioning program. Short INTENSE workouts get you in the best shape of your life. If you have questions pm me. You can do it for free with a few pieces of equipment.
-
To get into shape for hunting season I will hike every weekend with extra wieght in my pack. Started this weekend :'( Ya Im sore... I find that if I do that once a week, watch what I eat, and walk alot during the week I am better prepaired for bow season.
-
Great Video! Awesome Bull!!!! This video shows why it's a good idea to learn how to cape your animals. Especially elk and moose. You can separate the cape from the skull, cut the antlers from the skull and save another 20+ lbs by not packing around the lower jaw and the rest of the upper skull. There are a ton of guys that would have never been able to make that pack up out of that hole with one load like Travis did. Kudos to you man, You are an animal.
-
Awesome video, awesome bull! i would say im in ok shape right now. I'm big on lifting and fitness, but i haven't been doing much cardio. in the next couple weeks im gonna start getting on the treadmill for a short while then work my way up. i usually start off at incline full fast paced walked for 20 mins for two weeks, then move into a 40 min range, then 40 mins on a stair steeper or bike then a month before the season use a backpack full of weight and continue. Its fun to push the old vets i hunt with to there limit while being 19 and in shape during the season ;) . Im gonna need to be in great shape for this year though for my washington and montana tags!
Again, awesome bull man and tough pack!
-
cool vid and great bull! but there is no way in hell I am packing unnecessary weight out unless the pack out isn't that far? bone out of quarters and caped out the head and cut antlers off and threw a boned out quarter in pack.
-
With a bull like that I would be bringing it out with the head and letting the taxidermist take care of caping out the skull.
As to bone in quarters, I feel that the extra work of deboning in the field just isn't worth it. I have tried it both ways.
-
I was told this weekend that pony keg is a shape.... :IBCOOL: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
-
I spent the weekend lugging around concrete and treated 6" x 6" posts. Then 11 miles last night in prep for the upcoming half marathon. I would rather be hiking or packing out an elk quarter but I need to do something to pass the time. Keep up the work fellas!
-
Sounds like I need to catch up to some of you guys and start getting ready. :IBCOOL:

Are you participating in the Rock and Roll Marathon? I will be running in it.
-
No, not that one... a friend asked me to run the North Olympic Discovery half marathon on June 5th.

:yeah: Wife said the same thing!
-
If I could just hunt turkey one more week and cover the ground I just covered guaranteed I could run to Montana !!!! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I just started my walks last week started wth 35lbs of rocks n the pack did a couple small distance hikes of 4 or 5 miles then I bumped up the lbs to 50 today. Few more hikes like that then be challenging myself up to the back country lakes and day hikes bymid june early july. Just need to start eating better blaw! :chuckle:
-
Great bull. Finding the motivation to get in shape has always been tough for me. Last late season I think I gained upwards of five pounds just from eating alot at camp. I shot a cow and had a 3 mile downhill pack out - 1 trip with guys packing about 75 lbs each of boned out meat. Kicked my a$$ and made me determined to be in better shape all around. Some guys at work had been doing the Insanity workout with great results. I started it in January this year and have done 2 whole rounds (about 120 days). I've lost 40 pounds and feel like a million bucks every day. It is some serious cardio and plyo work. Going to do another round or move on to the Asylum workout next week. Also started eating less and better food, cut back on the homebrew and Pendletons, and started running. Would totally recommend the Insanity videos to any elk hunter. Bring on elk season and locked gates!!
-
during my 08 elk hunt i ate like a pig and still lost 20lbs and i didn't think i had 20 to lose :chuckle:
but i guess running those hills and packing two bulls out will do that to ya, i wish i could have that training program every year ;) come on WA draw
-
Travis, your just an animal :chuckle:
-
I weight lift 5 days a week, stair climb and run..recently started hot yoga..thats an experience :chuckle:

Always in shape for elk season!! It can't get here quick enough.... Started the insanity workout DVD series about 4 weeks ago. For those of you who want a hard workout and want to get in the best shape of your life - do it this series or P90X.. Both are great and you'll be ready to pound the hills!
Muleysniper is doing P90x right now, I think he can contest!
-
Weights and Cardio 5 days a week and have not touched any Alchohol in 6 weeks. Gonna join a Cross fit program in July to really set it off for the high country. you are absolutely right. I have gone 4 weeks now with no alcohol and have lost 15 lbs. Getting ready for the new mexico high country :)
-
Right now i am doin football workouts 5 days a week, running 3 miles 7 days, swimming 1/2 miles 6 days, and Mountain bike 15 miles at least once. There is never a day when i'm not sore, Lmao :bash:
-
I have started and I am sore most every day. What do you all do to alleviate the pain?
-
Stretch, drink lots of water and stay hydrated and stretch, i do low weight with lots of reps. That helps with the endurance. low reps and high weight just makes you look stronger,.
-
" Stretch, drink lots of water and stay hydrated and stretch, i do low weight with lots of reps. That helps with the endurance. low reps and high weight just makes you look stronger,."
Beach muscles are over rated
Its the leg muscles, core strength and cardiovascular health that hunters should strive for
-
started last week. Lost 6lbs so far. Been doing 2miles on are bicycle and 1 mile running every mourning. Feel a Little bit better about myself. I'll keep this up for one more week, then move to 4miles bike/2miles running.
baby steps.
-
14 more weeks of beer drinking and eating maple bars, then I'll start getting into shape.
-
I ran a half marathon on Sunday and will continue cardio and weight workouts until the season starts. It is a year round for me endeavour for me but everyone has to have their own system. Two hiking/scouting shakeouts also scheduled (July & August).
-
I am starting Sunday. I figured I better get one last Budlight session in before I get serious. I did however start shooting 40 arrows and that feels good.
-
14 more weeks of beer drinking and eating maple bars, then I'll start getting into shape.
:yeah:
well sort of not even sure if elk will be on my list this year.... will have to wait and see

Did plyometrics last night, going to hit the weights and do some kick boxing tonight. This thread is getting me fired up for the hunt!. I need to keep this motivation going.
-
2 weeks, lost 10lbs. feel great.
-
10 lbs gone, 30 to go. I will be running up the hills!

Started P90X three weeks ago. Should be done just in time to haul an elk out of the woods!!
-
How is that going?
I love it but I hate it
-

-
Bummer... in shape but no tag again. Going to need to be in REALLY good shape now to find a spike.
-
12 lbs in 2 weeks. 28 to go for elk shape.
-
all you lucky guys with elk tags time to kick it in gear
Damn :chuckle:
-
I just did 300 sqauts, 100 push ups, 150 sittings ups, 40 mary catherines and punched my punching bag...Getting better each day.
-
I did too but it took me a month to do it!! :chuckle:
-
since i didnt draw i will continue the 12 oz curl routine for awhile longer i guess.. :chuckle:
-
No special tag for me, so I've 18 weeks until elk season.
-
I've been getting some pretty good results following traintohunt.com website. Shooting three times a week, hiking twice a week, and getting ready to go scout Wenaha.
-
Nice 2legit.... ya ive started running again n doing my walk/hikes wth a full pack. Started to do some core work outs a lil. But i gotta start shooting again, unfortionetly my bow is in the shop getting a cable replaced :bash: not sure when it will be ready since the guy is backed up.
-

I changed that to borrowed, it looks good on there  Think I may join!! Looks like a cool site!!
-
I think I saw that picture, glad to know it's a WA bull no matter what unit it came from... One hell of a bull at that! Got me motivated big time, thanks for the inspiration. I don't do all of their workouts, but some of them are pretty damn creative and the coaching videos are what do it for me. Got my bow tuned up last night, and will sprint some hills tonight.
-
I did 11 mile hike with 20lb pack felt good time to up the weight

i hate it but it works....
-
I work my A** off at work so i could get the job done, but man these lbs i keep putting on every year are getting harder to lug around lol.
-
Its better to prepare for a big horn sheep or mt goat hunt, then elk hunting will seem easy :IBCOOL:
-
did 7 miles of trails today with a 35lb pack.. really feeling it in the knees lol :whoo:
-
got a 3 day backpacking trip coming up thursday, going to test out some new gear and log some miles, and check out new country. i usually do tth workouts
-
Just got back from a short workout, ran about 10 minutes with a 50 pound pack and hiked the rest up the hill and back. Only about a 30 minute workout but felt good.

Nice bulle bowsandhose. I recognize the spot off the road to Godman. I've hunted in there before. We got to the top from where your pickup is parked and some *censored*es came driving by on their four wheelers....I thought about putting some spike strips in the trail next year.
-
Not at all this year, started walking to work after my turkey hunt and my r-knee started to hert in the joint. Got worse and spent 3 days in a row on a boat halibut fishing and I could hardly walk. I'm a lineman 27+ years climbing poles and have hunted my whole life, I was diagnosed w/Osteoarthritis. It was a good flair up, just starting to feel better, going to start again next week walking to work again. The year I drew my moose tag I worked up to a 80lb sack of concrete in my pack at age 48, 51 now and can't belieave how hard it is on the body these days. :bash:
-
Don't let the mental aspect of it get the best of you.
-
Still ready. I hope to be packing my dad's bull out come September. Yes, I am his mule.
-
Like I tell my wife, I'm round.... Round is a shape.
-
I am working on a bowling ball shape this year. Gonna start at the top and roll downhill. :chuckle: :chuckle:
:chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I go in for back surgery on my L4 and L5 on Monday, and leave to Wyoming elk hunting in eleven to twelve weeks, " SHAPE", just be happy to walk! :)
-
Just did a scouting trip in 346 this weekend and man, there's nothing quite like hitting the mountains with a heavy pack to remind you that you have a LONG ways to go to still be in "elk shape"....man I'm sore.
It's not just the cardio and the stamina, it's the joints....ankles, knees, back. Going UP and DOWN those mountains with a load is killer, especially on the knees for me. Plus you start feeling the aches and pains of muscles used when actually HIKING hard, that you don't alway replicate in the gym.
No training quite for elk hunting like actually getting up in the mountains and DOING it.
-
I was going to scout this weekend, but the rainbow people are doing it for me. No way I'm going up there until after they leave.
-
Can't remember where exactly they were supposed to be this weekend, but we didn't see another soul...except for some critters.

25 pounds lost in 3 months. 15 more to go! Paleo Diet + Mt. Peak=Wonders
-
+1 on Paleo, as well as CrossFit and backpacking the mountains...getting there.
-
Very motivating video! Time to shed a few pounds and work on my cardio!
-
Just healed from a torn meniscus and my legs are hurting. The muscles that I haven't used for about 5 weeks are being used now! I can barley walk after sitting for a while. I now remember what I am going to feel like after the first couple days hunting!
-
Lost 17 lbs for the month of June. 23 lbs more by 09/08 should not be a stretch.
