I'll be 21 soon :IBCOOL: and would like to get one sometime this summer. So I was curious about what everyone on here likes. I'd like to get a 44 magnum revolver. Probly with a barrel around 10 inches. No idea what brand or any other specs. Not sure how much I'm willing to spend on one either.

S&W Large Frame .500 S&W 10 inch barrel

heavy-HK MP5

Hunting: Weatherby cfp 7mm-08 or 454casull raging bull
Concealed carry: xdm 40 or s&w performance model 327 in 357mag

Ruger blackhawk .357mag 4 5/8'' barrel. Beretta M9.

I'm a collector of original Ruger Flattops in .44 mag. Been packing one and hunting with one for decades. Of late I've fallen in love with Rugers new Blackhawk in .44 special which is built on the original 1956 .357 Blackhawk frame which makes it very small and compact. Since they built it with a steel grip frame and steel ejector rod housing it is substantially heavier than an original .44 Flattop.
Ruger Redhawks are fantastic though a bit heavy for an all around belt gun. For a double action I tend to like the Colt Anaconda though they are tough to find for a reasonable price. They are very very tough and will handle any reasonable load you wish to run though it.

What are your plans for a .44 mag with a 10" barrel?
My favorite pistol is my Ruger nm Blackhawk 4 5/8" .357 mag.
My most practical pistol is my Glock 22.

my dads luger w/ nazi proof mark

Of all the handguns I've owned over the years four stand out.
A S&W Model 13 4" HB with custom adjustable sights in 357 it shot well with everything from 125gr HP to 200gr LRNs.
A Star PD in 45 acp that was so accurate that someone offerred me twice what it was worth becaue they thought it was a custom gun, I was using it in Bowling Pin Matches in the early 80's.
A S&W Model 34 4" Round Butt 22 LR, it has killed more game than any rifle or shotgun I've owned. When I was running back country traplines it kept the pot full of grouse and snowshoe rabbits plus dispatched a semi load of coon, beaver and coyotes.
A Taurus Tracker 4" SS 41 Mag, I was carrying a Taurus 44 Spl at work and got invited to a deer hunt in WI with handguns so traded the 44spl for the 41 Mag, it's light accurate enough and with the ports quite controllable.
I'm not big on large heavy handguns, they are more of a tool to me and I like them to be handy to use. If I need more power I take a rifle.

for me my convertable blackhawk 45 7 5/8" barrel colt/auto. would be my favorite. i hunt with the colt, and plink with the auto. i load my own and this is a great platform for me.
my ccw is a kahr cw 45 with crimson trace is my favorite for day to day.
taurus 1911 works well in the pickup, too big to canseal.

For carry I've been favoring my little Ruger LCP, for hiking and goofing in the woods I've been leaning towards my Springfield XD in .45 ACP, for punching paper I usually pull out my Kimber Custom II. I have others but they don't see as regular use as the three mentioned.
-
For day to day carry: Springfield XD subcompact 9mm
For field carry: Ruger SP101 .357 mag
For hunting: Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag. (never used it for hunting, but would be cool to do so)

1911
Jarheads and their 1911s. If you guys weren't so damn good at shooting them, I'd make a snide remark. Nice pistol you have there.
My friend Rocky, 75 years old and also a misguided child of our uncle, shoots a 1911 with custom coco bolo grips. It's a thing of beauty. He sets up a sand-filled milk jug at 100 yards and hits it consistently. On the 25 yard range here, he literally shot out the 10 spot. It's some of the best handgun shooting I've ever seen. And, that's not even his weapon of choice. He's quite adept shooting the Winchester model 70. Dangerous people, jarheads.
-
Although there are other choices out there; I will stick to the 1911's

Since you stated that you wanted a 10" 44 mag revolver, I assume that you want to use it for hunting. 44mags are ok, but really, for hunting go larger: Ruger redhawk in 454 Casul, 480 Ruger or something like that.
-
:) Over all 1911 in 45acp, I also love revolvers both single and double action, that said. EVERYONE needs a 22 pistol, I prefer autos but revolvers are good. With my fat fingers and the little 22 shells I have a hard time loading 22 revolvers. I have no use for big handguns, I'd use a rifle first, "they call 'em handguns 'cause they're handy" Skeeter Skelton.

I do a lot of hunting so I'd like to buy one with the option of hunting with it. I'll look into the ruger redhawk 454. It seems that a lot of you guys like it.
-
Still love my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag.

If I wasn't married... My pistols would be my haram of girlfriends; each with a different personality. Love my Kimber 1911 (45acp) for competition. My Ruger 5 1/2" SS Redhawk probably gets the most holster time in the woods and for pure pistol hunting. The 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk may have taken a back seat to the RH but only because the RH is stainless. I still love the SBH. Both are 44mags. For paper targets to Grouse, the customized Ruger MKII's get the nod. I took out the 4" Colt Diamondback (38spl) the other day. My son really loves that one. I even put some rounds through the SP101 (357mag) the other day. That's the carry gun most of the time. (Black Tallons!) There are others... But those get the most fodder out the barrel.
Target is 50 yards. One hand shooting. Kimber 1911 45acp. (OK, yeah, I dropped one.) :o

No kidding! That 50 yard group looks about like my 10 yard groups with a .45 :(
-
Thanx!
I practice, 50rnds, 50yds, 50 minutes. One hand, for my Slow Fire practice for Bullseye shooting. I'll admit that is one of my better targets. The objective of the practice is get 50rnds in the black. 10's and X's are nice, but just get them all in the black is still a challenge. (I shoot twice a week much of the year. Often three times a week, throwing in Timed and Rapid sessions.) That adds up to thousands of rounds fired every year just from that one gun. -And get this, I don't win matches! I'm usually middle of the road to maybe 70 percentile in scores. I won many Sharpshooter classes, then a few at the Expert ranks for outdoor matches. I just earned Master last year for indoor. That particular target would score 96%. Master score is 95%. (There are High Masters here in the Puget Sound area) If they don't shoot 9's or better at 50yds, they're having a bad day. These are also refined target loads. Not white box Winchester defensive or ball ammo. My 1911 also has a Matchdot on it. When I shoot with irons, I have less in the X/10 rings but proud to put plenty in the black.
So what's my favorite pistol? The one I shoot the best! So, I guess it is quite the toss-up, because I shoot my customized Ruger MKII for Master scores most times. Love that gun.

Have several that I like, but shoot really well with the S&W 617, S&W 686. Kimber 1911 for semi auto.
-
For hunting I like ruger super blackhawks and redhawks in 44mag
For plinking a ruger single six in 22lr
For ccw I just bought a S&W airweight with crimson trace grips in 38s+P

I'll always be a 1911 fan. I love my S&W wheel gun too though. Its like JamieB's bigger brother. 340 M&P with CT grips but will also handle .357.
-
Dan Wesson 15-2 in 357. if you are lucky you can find the pistol pack that comes with the 2, 4 ,6, and 8 inch barrels. and you can order new barrels up to 15 inches i belive.
-
[quotesmith 629 44mag][/quote]
:yeah:
If your looking at a 44 mag or more, I would recommend you spend some time shooting one first. Plenty of big bore pistols are bought and just sit because they're not for everyone. My SW 44 mag has plenty of stomp to it, I can only imagine what a 454 or larger would do.
-
Ruger Redhawk in .44 mag.
I also love the 1911's.
For pure fun, the Ruger .22 pistols are a blast.
-
CZ P-07 Duty
very well rounded gun wish i never traded it.
-
My favorite handgun is my Ruger Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull. My most practical handgun (and a gun I also love) is my 1911. Plinking either Glock 17 or Heritage Rough Rider in 22lr.
-
Ruger Super blackhawk in .44 mag Kimber tactical pro in .45 Walther p22 in .22
-
1911 and Blackhawk are my favorites. My Blackhawk is in .357 6 1/2" barrel. I have been thinking of trading it for or just buying a Blackhawk in .45 colt/ACP platform with the 5 1/2" barrel.
-
Any and all handguns.
-
I love my S&W 686 .357mag w/ 6" barrel. Although lately I've been getting the itch to trade it towards a .44 mag.

Love my Kimber 1911. A S&W 629 .44mag is on the list as my next handgun purchase
-
Glock 19 for everyday carry gun.
Ruger Blackhawk in .41 mag for woods on my hip gun.

Nuff' said. :)
I had one years ago, paid $425 for it....... :'( :'( I want it back.

Super blackhawks are single action, the original Blackhawks are double action as well as Redhawks.

I am very fond of of S&W 657 41.
I shoot that a lot more than my 629 44.
It's just a whole lot more comfortable shoot.

well I did not know that and in my research that was the main difference I found.... just glad my blackhawk is now loved so much by its owner .....I liked it but need a different front sight style the ramp and my eyes were not compatible...I will own another 357 some day

Dang I feel cheated! Just check some of the 3 and 4 digit one's I have and they are all single action!
Even the early bearcats are single action as well.

Blackhawks had the conversion kits for them to become a single action.
If you find one, dont get rid of it! Father had one,(44mag) i almost shot him as a kid, because of the double acion. He left guns loaded in the house all the time. Dumb, but the life of a vietnam vet...

I do believe that the conversion kit was to just release Ruger from Liability. The fact the hammer did not rest on the firing pin and therefore caused premature discharge when dropped.
Starting in the mid 1970's or early 1980's Ruger ran ads in major consumer firearms publications offering subject transfer bar conversions for free, for all models except the little Bearcat. {They claimed that its size made it impractical to convert, but later changed their position, and convert them, today.}
To the best of my knowledge, Ruger has never publicly or widely stated the actual reason for this free conversion offer; {I have tried to get an answer from them more than once, to be met with silence or claims of ignorance} but it is likely a safe bet that it has do do with product liability, and possibly a 30+ year old settlement of litigation.
Ruger's original ads pointed out that for many years it been well known folk wisdom to carry a Colt Single Action Army type revolver (of which "three frame screw" Rugers are a close copies) with the hammer all the way down on an empty chamber. These ads went on to say that this wisdom was being forgotten, and that Ruger wanted to convert their "three screw" revolvers to the new transfer bar system for public safety reasons.
I see no reason to do this conversion on a knowledgeable, careful person's personal firearm. It is not likely that most persons are going to get into a situation where a sixth shot is going to make a life or death difference while carrying one of these revolvers!
However, I would not (and will not) sell or otherwise transfer possession or ownership of an unmodified "three screw Ruger" for potential liability reasons!!!! {I understand that the gun shop that sold the .380 Bryco pistol that the CA jury (in the Jennings- Bryco- babysitter lawsuit) determined was of a less than safe design (by then current standards) was hit with a $5,000,000.00 judgment in addition to the $24,000,000 against the pistol maker and designer. {I opine that this lawsuit caused Ruger to redesign the Mark II into the Mark III .22 auto-loading pistol!}
As to your question about your nice crisp, custom, 2.5 pound trigger pull; I have never had a Ruger "three screw" converted; but (based on their advertised statements about returning removed original parts) believe that you will get at least new trigger (sear) and hammer to work with the transfer bar system. You will likely get the type of 4 pound (or more) not very crisp trigger pull for which stock single action Rugers are well known, for product liability reasons.
Hope this is informative.

:yeah: The transfer bar system. These kits are for the old 3 screw SA Ruger revolvers.

exactally like that. man i am jealous of that pretty pistol pack!!!! i found mine at a pawn shop with only the 4 and 6 inch barrel but stole it for $200 just dont think that guy knew what he had. but they are real strait shooters. are those hk speed loaders in the pic???
-
Really like my Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag and 4 5/8 in. barrel. It's a little too heavy for packing in the high county, however. Would like to find a lighter weight 44 Mag. that's a shooter.
-
Yes, those are HK speedloaders with the Dan Wesson. (complete pistol pack with serialized case, large wood grips and the target grips)
Oh.. Uh, Yeah, I'd like to see a Double Action Blackhawk. :chuckle:

Wow, that 5 7 is awesome!
For a big bore I like the Ruger Super Blackhawk hunter,
I carry a SP101 and a HK USP 40 Compact.
-
1911 8)

My CC everyday is a 9mm S&W Sigma, but when I am hunting any season the gun on my hip is a Taurus Judge 2.5 in .410 & 45 Long Colt. I love the fact i can mix the loads depending on time and place.
-
i've only owned 2 pistol's a Ruger P90 in .45 and I now have an xd .45 so i'll have to go with the xd myself.
-
I'm liking my XD .45. It's awesome.
Question: Can you change the elevation on the sights? Mine shoots 6" low at 25 yards when the dots are lined up.
-
Conceal: light-1911 .45 ACP any mfg
heavy-HK MP5
you conceal an MP5?!!!! how big of a coat do you wear?! is a 3 -round burst model? :chuckle:
i've carried a couple of different pistols. first i bought was a Rossi 4" .357. I like it and still have it. puts a nice big hole in bears! i've also carried a Kahr CW40. i love the pistol, but couldn't hit a thing with it. shipped her on down the road at a gun show. carried a P64 in 9x18 mak. i was accurate with it and i liked it, but as an all steel gun, it was a bit heavy for working in the office (not a gun friendly office, so deep concealment was paramount). then i had a diamondback .380, which i liked, but .380 was, well, .380. now i'm carrying a S&W 637-2 airweight in .38+P. i've always wanted one, shoot them pretty well and now i have one!
if i was looking for a .44, i'd probably head to the safe and grab either the nickle or blue S&W Mdl 29 my dad has. both 6.5" barrels. hard to go wrong with S&W.
Rugers are good guns, just don't do a whole lot for me looks wise. a friend has a .41. nice pistol. shoots very well, but single action. for me, well, colt and S&W would be where'd i'd look.
-
Wow, that 5 7 is awesome!
:yeah:
I feel I must have one of those!
-
For hunting I like my Ruger Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger the best. Next would be my .500 S&W Mag. Both have 2x Leupolds on the them.
-
For carry guns, if it's an auto loader I'm partial to 1911s. If it's a revolver, I've grown fond of the Chiappa Rhino.
For field guns or side arms while hunting I like the 4" Redhawk in 45 Colt, or a 6.5" S&W 610 (10mm)
For serious handgun hunting with a revolver I loved the 10" 45-70 BFR until I hurt my wrists and had to sell it. Now I've moved on to the bolt action pistols. You get all the power you could want in a gun with very little recoil.

It's hard not to like a gun that gives you 338 Win Mag ballistics from an 18" barrel. :chuckle:

-
you conceal an MP5?!!!! how big of a coat do you wear?! is a 3 -round burst model? :chuckle:
The MP5K (and even PDW) aren't that difficult to conceal. Especially with a short mag. Any large rain coat works....it can hang on a tac-sling and doesn't distort the jacket while walking.
3 rd burst.....yeah right. Not in this state. S or F.
It would be nice to find something like this to fit it....especially with a vert grip.
" Come on Santa Claus!!! Been arguably good this year. :chuckle:
