Funny video on birdwatching with a pellet rifle scope with some nice starling kill shots.
Bird Watching "Airgun Style" - Episode 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee5fkOlqxIM#ws)

Good post. I hate them with a passion and have shot many. They love my garden and even bomb my dogs. So when I have a chance, they die :chuckle: .
-
What a funny video!
Keeping starlings out of the eaves of my house is a major problem for me, and its said they continue to add to the size of the nest their entire lifespan...sad for homeowners!
I think if every hunter in the US started hunting starlings, we still couldn't get them under control.
-
Same problem here with starlings in the eaves. PathfinderJR has been waging war on them all weekend. killed two yesterday. Funny, they know him now. My wife goes out into the yard and they're everywhere. JR goes out there (pellet gun or not) and they vacate. He has several hide sites set up around the property, but they are starting to figure those out too....
-
Got to spend a summer on an Uncles farm in Eastern Canada. After dinner he'd take me out in the yard with a pitcher of iced tea and two .22 cal pellet guns. We'd shoot starlings till it got dark. He had some words for them I wont repeat here.. :chuckle:
-
That guy is hilarious! He also put a lot of work into his video. Pretty cool set up he has there.
-
Grew up shooting them with a BB gun.
I also remember when I was a kid, they used to have large apple boxes out in the fields near the airport (SeaTac) with chain link fence over the top, the birds would land on top, drop inside for a snack... could not fly out again.
They would kill them by the thousands that way, and still barely made a dent.
wonder what happened to that... :dunno:
-
Got one this morning in my back yard with my pellet gun. Orchardists in my area used to build traps out of wire and bait them in by the hundreds. Didn't seem to hurt the populations any. They are extremely intelligent, and loyal to their mates. Last year a family of them landed in my yard. I winged the adult female. The male flew off but the confused chicks stayed to be picked off. The female ran under a bush and kept calling until the male came back, and I picked him off and finished off the female. Scratch one whole Starling family.

They got rid of both traps because they were attracting other birds as well. Robins were affected to a major extent.
Doggy I saw the frame of one the other day and looked like the orchardist was going to put more chicken wire on it and reuse it. I think they can be effective, but the problem was some put poison water in them for a quicker kill. By doing that they had no control over trying to release nontargeted species. A friends dad had one with a little door you could crawl in and release robins etc. He once released a small hawk.
-
That's so cool, I want his set up!
-
Haha im shooting starlings now and just saw this post!
Im at 11 starlings down now!!
-
Now that is my kind of video!
-
I don't kill Robins, but I know people that do. Especially cherry growers. They hate them. Robins go along a branch and take a bite out of every cherry they see. Wouldn't be so bad if they just ate one cherry, but they ruin the whole crop.
-
I've shot 7 of them Black *censored*s today so far. :hunt2: I bet they've crapped two hundred times on my Boat,Truck & Car since yesterday. :bash:
-
This is a good time to be popping them. The first hatch is just leaving the nest and following mom and dad around.

A guy I know in Cashmere calls them orange-breasted starlings.
-
Oh I agree Robins can be a pest too and they do the same thing to other soft fruits, but you know this state and how they can look at things.
-
what are some of the birds that are leagal to kill? :dunno: and what ones are protected?

I know for certain starling and english house sparrows can be killed at any time. Crows can be killed during crow season but can also be killed anytime in the act of depredation.

Also Rock Doves (park pigeons), and Eurasian Collared Doves- the ones that are bigger than Mourning Doves, the ones with the black band around the back of the neck.
-
PathfinderJR got two more today. Go gettum!
-
Very interesting air rifle. Some good kill shots with the starlings.
-
I have been snuffing a few in my garden ... :chuckle: :chuckle:

hahaha yeah I have been pluggin a few again ...now they are after my cheeries which I will shoot anyone or anything over when they are geetin ripe ...actually best get some more pellets ...
-
That was GREAT , thanks kain !
-
Got a Starling a couple of days ago. Last week a pair of Eurasian Collared Doves began hanging around, and one of them made the fatal mistake of landing in my yard.
That guy does a great job on his videos! and, yeah, I hate Starlings.
The mate to the Collared Dove looked around the next day for the other one, then hasn't been around since.
-
my dad is gonna love this. He logs hundreds of straling kills every year in his back yard ... perhaps he'll end up in one of these videos one day :bfg:
-
cool vid Kain. Thanks for posting it.
Yeah, they are mean little *censored*s. When I was a kid I climbed up into a tree by our house and found a nest of baby robins that had their heads pecked off by starlings. They were the only "tweety bird" that mom approved of me shooting...

Come on guys, get with the show, here are some recipes;
Broiled starlings on toast
Cut the breasts in half. Lay inner side down on butter-greased broiler. Tie strip of bacon about each breast with a thread. Broil to a golden brown. Rub with oil or butter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and a bit of parsley. Serve on buttered toast.
Roast starling
Dress starlings same as you would quail. Cover with bacon strips. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add a slice of onion. Place in roasting pan. Roast to a light brown. Baste with drippings to which a touch of vegetable oil has been added. Green parsley and water cress make a suitable garnish. Serve with mushroom soup. A dash of red wine won’t hurt. Serve two starlings to a person. they go good with beer.
Starling stew
Sprinkle with salt and pepper and fry in butter lightly. Dust with flour and add three slices of onion, 1 bay leaf, add a half glass of wine and water to cover. Stew slowly. When tender, set aside in a warm dish and let the stew-broth simmer to thicken. Then strain and serve.

Hey, don't laugh guys.... when I was a kid back in New England, an old Italian guy that my buddy worked for told me one day that if I ever got a bunch of Starlings, save them for him. I aked what he wanted those things for, and he said; "I'll cook 'em and eat 'em. They're a delicacy in Italy!"
They do seem to have a lot of meat on the breasts.

It's a good thing some of the immigrants brought their "culture" with them--I know guys that would starve to death if it wasn't for Pizza! and how about that perennial Scottish favorite, Chicken McNuggets?

That was awesome! Thank you for sharing that with us. That took an incredible amount of time and effort to put that video together, and I'd like to know how he was able to film through his scope like. He must be just looking at the LCD screen when shooting?
I've always wondered about Flickers, they gather in our yard sometimes. We had 11 of them pecking around there one morning, but my camera was in my truck. Now I know what they were doing! I learned something, it's a good day.

He did some videos of how he setup his camera.

:chuckle: double breasted mattress thrasher :chuckle: :chuckle:
I just got the Benjamin 1500 Trail XP w/Nitro Piston for starling/ crow patrol. It may be a little much for running the deer out of the garden.
-
Very cool setup

That is a great video. I love the footage through scope. I want a setup like that.

Very cool, nicely done.

Informative, entertaining, accurate, and all-in-all a good follow-up video of life in the real world.
I love the slow-mo video of the pellet in action.
-
He has great video. Excellent footage, excellent narrations, very cool!

-
haha ive seen that guys videos before he is a madman with that pellet gun
-
Reminds me of the inordinate amount of time I spent shooting starlings with pellet guns when I was younger. Also used just about every other type of gun. I wonder how much lead I have thrown at this bird over the years?
