Lots of bucks but no babies in Elk yet. saw a baby antelope in montana last week, first one I ever saw, all wet and just stood up.

I walked up on a newborn mule deer fawn on Thursday afternoon last week down in the Blues foothills at about the 3500' mark. Didn't even see it till I was right on top of him. I took a few pics and got out of dodge. I turned around about 100 yards away from where it was laying and watched the mama doe head right back to it on a b-line. I didn't see her prior to finding the fawn. From that point on I avoided all the spots where I saw deer. I don't know if it's bad for the fawn or not but I didn't want to take any chances. I saw 3 bull elk and 2 cows in the same area with no calves.
I'll post a couple pics later on.

Here's the muley fawn I found last week. It took me a minute to decide if he/she was alive but I could see him breathing. Hopefully this little one makes it.

My trail cam got a picture on 5/28 of a blacktail doe w/two fawns. I already posted the picture in the trail cam forum but I'll post it again. I cropped it a bit and it's very grainy, and not only that but it's blurry from the movement of the deer. So, sorry for the poor picture but it's all I got. The one fawn that is closest- I'm not sure what the deal is but the head/neck is partly missing. After staring at it for a while and adjusting the brightness/contrast, and cropping it, (which none of that really helped) I think it is just due to the fawn moving it's head at the same time the picture was taken. I finally realized that must be the case since the doe is also missing a body part- her left ear. Anyway, here's the original picture and the cropped version:

Just talked to my brother in law who drives tour and guide boats up Hell's Canyon from Lewiston. Said he saw a cow and big bear along the river and the cow was freaking out. The bear ran around a rock and grabbed a newborn calf, threw it in the air and slammed it against the rocks. The bear did not even acknowledge that they were there, less than 100 yards away as he ate it.
Next day he was in the Salmon river confluence area and saw a cougar (biggest he's seen after 30 years in the area) that was eating on a kill not 10 yards from the rivers edge. He said it ran up the hill side and stood there and watched them from within 100 yards. They watched him for a while with a boat load of 4th grade scouts on board and then headed up around the corner where there was yet another cougar eating on a kill next to the river. Quite a show for 4th grade boy scouts.
Must be the year of the predator up there. I would sure hate to be a calf, or any prey for that matter anywhere in this region. Cats and Bears everywhere.
