I think the shock has wore off a little but I don't think my feet have hit the ground yet. I drew a NEVADA DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP TAG! OMG!!! This is a chance for me to complete my Grand Slam in 14 short years! I am very thankful for the opportunity.
I've started making phone calls and ordered maps already as I'll be doing it self-guided and I want to gather as much info about the units(044-182) as I can. I'm already planning a couple of scouting trips in the coming months.
I'm just so excited about being able to hunt sheep again.
Bryan
-
Congrats hope you can get a ram and fill your slam :IBCOOL: Make sure you keep us posted on your hunt. We always love to follow other hunters on there hunting quests, but a sheep hunt is always better  :chuckle:
-
:rockin: right on congrats on the tag! post pic when you fill it! good luuuuuck
-
Wow that's great! Congrats on a heck of a tag.
MS
-
Good luck and you better stop off and get a few lotto tickets. Can't wait for the story and pictures.
-
Congrats, Especially if all of those tags were draws! WOW. I've been after my first for 12 years and am still waiting for the 1st. I'm thinking my 'slam' is going to be 1, not 4.
-
That's awesome. Hope you get your slam. It would be cool to just get one sheep let alone a slam.
-
I think I knew you drew before you did. Congrats
-
Congrats! Good luck on your slam
-
Wow!!! Congrats!!!!!
-
Awesome!!!
-
Thats Awesome!
-
Congrats man! Thats awesome. Looking forward to the pics!
-
AWESOME!! Nice going and good luck!!
-
Congrats!!! Thats a awesome Tag to have.
-
That's awesome!!! Saw some photos of some nice Rams that where taken in Nevada last yr.
-
Congrats on the tag, and the best of luck to you!
-
Brian,
What an awesome oportunity you have before you. Kudos for putting in all those years. Good things come to those who wait.
Good luck to you in this adventure of a lifetime !
-
wow! congrats, cant wait to follow the story of your hunt and see the (hopefully) successful pictures!
-
Congrats!! Was the rest of your slam quest self-guided as well?
-
Congrats...its gotta be that good karma from your countless hours of conservation support!
-
Thanks for all the words of encouragement. I'll be sure to keep this thread updated through out my scouting and the hunt.
I'm still amazed at having drawn a desert tag even though I apply religiously in all states and enter every sheep raffle I can find. To say I'm excited is such an understatement!
The people who know me say I'm lucky and I suppose I am looking at the last 10-15 years, but as Ramslam hinted, I am very passionate about the conservation of our wild sheep and try to be involved all I can.
I have had the awesome experience of having three other bighorn tags before this desert tag and have hunted each with family and friends. Saying self guided is kinda untrue as lots of different people have helped me be successful in my sheep hunting carrier even though some have never stepped on the mountain with me. I know this tag(adventure) wont be any different and I just cant wait.
Bryan
-
MY OH MY is right. Congrats on the tag.
-
Awesome tag and what an accomplishment! Cant wait to see the end to this story! If you get time lets see the other 3 you have harvested! Again CONGRATS!!!!
-
Congrats on the tag! I hear that area is pretty rugged country. But I'm sure you're already in sheep shape ;). Hope many points did it take you to draw that tag? I'm setting on 9 so I'm sure it will be a while for me. Look forward to hearing/reading about your hunt.
-
Congrats on an awesome tag. Can't wait to follow the story and see the pics! Good Luck!
-
Congrats!!! & Good luck.
-
Congratulations! Can't wait for the story/pics.
-
Congrats, you definately put the time in for sheep, glad you get the chance to complete the slam!
-
Congrats to you. Sounds like you are very deserving of a great tag to fulfill the ultimate quest for a slam... Got any pics of your bighorn, dall and stone???
-
Thanks all.
I had 11 bonus points going into this years draw and drew my second choice. As I stated earlier it's not know as a trophy unit or one that's easy to hunt but my odds of drawing were much better. Plus, a trophy is in the eye of the beholder and it should be a great time ending in me completing the GSlam. Any sheep tag is a great tag!
Some of my sheep I killed before the digital area so I'll take some of my mounts and post them here. You can find some pics of my last Dall hunt in an earlier thread. That was a really really neat adventure ending in me killing my best (scoring) Dall.
Is there any other grand slammers here other than Ram Slam?
Bryan
-
Congrats on the tag! I kind of chuckle when you say you suppose you have been lucky when you said you drew 3 bighorn tags before this tag because if you got them through draws you have been extremely lucky. (Unless somehow they pick your name due to your conservation efforts) That was a joke conspiracy theory guys. As someone who has put in for draw tags in most western states and most every lottery drawing that comes across my desk the past 10-15 years I would state that the odds of you drawing all the tags you have are astronomical. I know I will probably never draw a sheep tag but I will continue to try. I agree with the good karma for conservation efforts and I hope that you have a great hunt and kill the best ram you find.
-
Congrats on the draw and best of luck w/the hunt.
-
Just drove through Nevada and had sheep on my mind. AWESOME you drew a hunt. Good luck! Its even more exciting when someone who absolutely follows an animal draws.
-
Ok, I'm going to try to post some pics. First is a fannin/stone rame I killed in 2005 with Blackstone Otfitters in the Yukon. I did want to hunt spacifically for a fannin as I had plans to hunt a true stone that fell through but was still on the backburner and this ram brought me to the 3/4 slam mark.
Bryan
-
This next ram is my best (score wise) dall I killed with Todd Walton and his Alaska Big Game Safaris in 2009. I won this hunt through the WAWSF (formerly WAFNAWS)members only raffle. Great time, great people, great ram!
-
Sorry about the same pic. lets try again.
-
My stone sheep is next. I was able to hunt in 2007 with Wes Berg. Finally after 8 days of backpacking in BC we spotted this 39 inch beauty and I was able to kill him the next morning from 90 yards. What an adventure!
-
Some outstanding sheep!
Are you hunting with a outfitter with the tag you drew?
-
I'll post my 2008 dall as I found him. I hunted with Blackstone in the Yukon again on a moose rut hunt but I just had to shoot a sheep before I could go chase those big stinky things around. The rest of the hunters in camp thought I was crazy as I was the only and last person to hunt for sheep that year.
I had a great time listening to all the stories Paul, my guide had as I was his 107th or 109th sheep hunter.
We were able to find a nice 57 inch moose in the day and half we had left in my ten day hunt. Gotta love that luck!
I'll let Paul be in the picture of my 12 year old broomer ram.
Bryan
-
I'll be going at it with just family and friends. No outfitter. I don't think there is anything wrong what so ever in using an outfitter but for me a big part of the hunt is the scouting, searching, calling and figuring out the unit and best way to hunt it. Some of my best friends are some of the sheep guides that I have hunted with in the past but if it's legal to do it on my own, that's what I'd prefer.
Bryan
-
Yep, understand. Up north it's matter of being legal. Down here it's fun to DIY.
-
You've been very fortunate to take some truly fantastic animals. My friend Ed Lande was on the same hunt with you both took your Dalls in 2009. He spoke very highly of you. Congrats on your new sheep tag. I'm looking forward to hearing about your Nevada hunt.
-
How old was the stone? 11? Hard to see in the pic's.
-
Congrats and good luck :) Have a friend that has completed the slam. p.m me if youwant I believe he also hunted Utah/ Arizona
-
beautiful rams, all of them, you have been blessed. Perhaps one day.......
-
That Stone's sheep....my oh my!
-
Man...I hate you!
Well not really, just kind of.
Congrats on a great sheep hunting adventure and we look forward to the next one.
-
Beautiful rams! Although I don't hate you, I am a little jealous. The season dates run in late November don't they? Good luck Bryan! I know you will make us Washingtonians proud.
-
Season runs November 20th - December 20th.
-
great pics
-
I thought this was a baseball thread. :chuckle: Congrats on drawing your tag! Good luck on your up comming hunt!
-
Good luck on the Ram Slam
-
how about some pictures of the two rams killed in washington
-
I finally found a few pics of my 06 ram I took here in WA. I had a great time on the hunt trying to close the distance with my bow but I had to resort to the rifle on the last day I had to hunt. It was OK I didn't kill the biggest ram I had seen because I was able to share the moment with my wife and six year old daughter.
-
Great pics
-
What animals entail a "ram slam". I dont know alot about sheep/goats....
-
When referring to the "grand slam of sheep" it consists of the 4 varieties of North American Wild Sheep. Dall, Stone/Fannin, Bighorn(rocky mountain or California), and a Desert Bighorn(any of the several varieties). Some people break the sheep varieties even more by counting the Cali and rocky as different(which they are in my opinion), the stone and fannin as different subspecies and then the different desert sheep( at least 3 I can think of). Add the rocky mountain goat in and some call it the "high 5" of N.A.
Bryan
-
Sorry I have to go to mounted pictures or the next rams as they were taken in 1997 and 1998, and I don't have any pics scanned yet.
The first ram I ever killed was the Cali from Clemens Mountain. He is the upper bighorn.
The life sized bighorn is a ram I killed in Oregon the very next year. What a time my cousin and I had on that hunt. I killed him 10-11 miles back in the Eagle Cap Wilderness and with 95 degree weather we hiked him all the way out that first day then had to hike back in the next to retrieve the camp. I was all smiles every step!
-
All I can say is WOW! Congrats that wall full of sheep is what dreams are made of. Good luck. -DSP-
-
That's awesome! Ok, now I hate you. Just kidding. Being able to share one of your sheep hunts with family had to be a pretty cool experience. That's about as good as it gets. Thanks for sharing Bryan! Again, good luck!
-
Any updates on how scouting is going in Nevada?
-
Hope to see some success pics soon of a big ol Desert Ram!
-
Truly amazing. Im still waitin on my 1st draw but can't wait!! Great Job and Good Luck!
-
How did the 2nd Washington ram come? By a raffle?
-
Holy Sheep Junkies!! Very impressive!
-
Congrats! Good luck and I can't wait to see the results and pics of the grand slam.
-
Great pic's, thanks for sharing.
-
The time is almost here! I've been chomping at the bit to get down to NV and start my hunt to finnish my Grand Slam! I'll finnish packing tomarrow and leave early saturday morn. The season opened on the 20th and I have to say it's the first sheep tag I've had and havent been hunting opening season. It's a weird feeling but I know it was the best choice as I should have the unit to my self and I'll still have 24 days to find and kill a ram. If I cant get it done in that many days then I dont deserve a ram!
I'm starting to feel the preasure.
Bryan

I spent 3 years living and playing in unit 173. Lots of sheep in the canyons there. I would see them all year round. A friend just shot his on the 21st. If you want to know about the area, let me know.
-
Luck has definitely been on your side with the sheep...Good Luck in Nevada!!! Update us when you get a chance....
-
Good luck completing your slam. I've been following this thread. Can't wait to hear about a nice desert sheep down.
-
Anyone hear from Bryan yet?
-
I am very happy to say, Grand Slam Ram down!! My hunting buddy, Andy and I got back home Monday morning from our awesome adventure. As most of you know I'm on the board of the WA Wild Sheep Foundation and I will be writing a story for our next news letter about my hunt. I dont want to ruin the story for the members but I think it wouldnt be fair not to tell some of the story.
We were in NV for a total of 9 days with me killing my desert ram on the 8th day of the hunt. Andy and I were closing distance on a different ram when Andy saw 15 other sheep moving up a different draw. One look and we both new the big ram in the group was THE ram I came to Nevada to kill. They had us pinned down with no chance at a stalk so we had to wait till dark before we could back out to the truck.
We returned to the area the next morning well before light to make sure we didnt spook the sheep. After waiting two hours in the dark befor I picked up the group not far from where we left them the night before. We spent the next hour discussing stalking options and for the wind to make up its mind. The sheep were in a difficult spot to get close to and we didnt want to screw it up!
It was time to go. We chose a route that we thought would put us within shooting range but when we got to the spot we found we were still way to far away for my shooting ability. We backed out and crawled into a draw separating us from them cutting considerable distance. Once we climbed out into some bluffs above where we last seen the ram we knew it was only a matter of time before he showed. We could see most of the other sheep were up and feeding but we still couldnt see our target ram. One small ram was just in view below us and he kept looking back. I told Andy I was positive our ram had to just be out of sight below a small rise seperating us from the other sheep. One hour later the small ram went out of site below and moments later my ram stepped into view. I had to reposition quickly because I relized my bullet would hit some rocks just in front of me. One zap from the rang finder confirmed his distance and all I had to do is let him turn broadside. I settled my 300 yard crosshair low on his chest and skueezed the trigger promply shooting over his back!!! Andy confirmed which one he was, very quickly I might add, and my next shot ended my quest to compleet the GRAND SLAM of North Americam Wild Sheep.
I was feeling a lot of emotion at this time but I'm not a jump up and down screaming kinda guy so Andy and I just hung out on the bluff talking. I think I just wanted the moment to last as long as it could.
I'll let you decide what you think of my ram from the pictures. (once I get some off my camera)
I was asked a few days later "now what?" My answer to him was, "I never started hunting the wild sheep to compleet a checklist or slam. I started by drawing a tag but then that one tag turned into a passion. Both for hunting the wild sheep and for the conservation of our sheep. This accomplishment is just one of the bennifits from that passion I have been able to enjoy. I'll always be applying for and planning my next sheep hunt."
I need to first thank my wife for encouraging me to chase my dreams and for understanding the passion I have for the wild sheep. And next I am really, really thankful to my friend Andy for being there on this and other hunts for me. I always know I can count on him in good times and bad. It ment a lot to me to have you there with me when I killed this ram!

Can't wait to see the pics! Congrats! :brew:
-
Once again I am having trouble getting pictures off my camera but here are a couple taken from my phone.
Bryan
-
very nice, congrats....
-
Awesome sheep.
-
Good job on completing the slam. That's a nice sheep!
-
Job well done! Very happy for you!!
-
Congrats Bryan. Beautiful Desert Bighorn. From what I can tell you're already half way to another slam with two expensive sheep in the books. Now you just have to draw another Desert BH in AZ or UT and a Rocky in ID, CO, WY or MT and call it good :chuckle: Way to get it done.
-
Was wondering how it was going, congrats on the slam! So cool.
-
Awesome, congratultions!
-
Congrats Bryan! And if my math is correct, you just need another desert for slam #2?!?!
-
greatr job on a fine throphy !
-
awesome, probably cant beat that smile off your face, nice work
-
Thanks,
It really was a great hunt. He wont be biggest killed in NV but he will always hold a top spot in my hunting memories.
Ramslam and Elkstuffer, you are both correct. I need another desert bighorn to complete a second slam with a stone and desert for a 3 slam. I'm not greedy and I'm willing to wait a year or two before drawing another tag.lol
-
I was just reading a desert sheep story in Huntin Fool and was thinking of you. Congrats on a great ram!
-
Congrats on your Slam. I heard it was a hard but obviously rewarding hunt. Awesome
-
Dude, your photogtopher needs to keep his shadow to himself. ;)
-
A outstanding animal, congrats
-
That's the shadow from the camera man? I thought that was a chicken wing. My bad.
-
haha ya I know hard to thell the differnece. Hay wanna go for a run?
-
You gonna mount that sheep? :chuckle:.. Dam nice ram .. Do you got any front on pics? looks really massive..
-
Good job.That's a great ram.
-
Here is one of my favorite pics. Oh ya, I'll be mounting him but just a shoulder mount as I kinda ran out of room for full body mounts.
Bryan
-
Nice ram!! I grew up hunting nevada. a lot of people underestimate the animals from there. jealous about the tag. my dad has been trying to get one for 10 years. i have'nt put in yet. figured it could be my mid life crisis hunt :dunno:
-
Wow, what a beautiful animal, congrats!!!!
-
:yeah:
-
This next ram is my best (score wise) dall I killed with Todd Walton and his Alaska Big Game Safaris in 2009. I won this hunt through the WAWSF (formerly WAFNAWS)members only raffle. Great time, great people, great ram!
Looks like a Tok permit ram. I would bet the bank on that. Nice ram.
-
That looks like a massive body ram :yike: horns are very funky on him as well, with a cool shape!
-
Great job, Bryan!
-
Sorry Akbowman, it was an Alaska Range dall ram. Great hunt with a couple of great guides.
And to let everyone know WA Wild Sheep Foundation (wafnaws.com) is once again raffling off a Alaska Big Game Safaris dall sheep hunt as top prize for our 2012 members only raffle. $25 for membership and $25 a ticket could win your self a hunt of a lifetime to be drawn during our Feb. banquet.
