Title: Long tailed Weasel
Post by: Rick on June 04, 2008, 08:45:49 PM
Anyone else seen one in Western Wa.?

I was sitting at a stoplight near Silver Lake in Everett a couple days ago. All of a sudden something catches my eye as it darts out from some brush along the road.

I thought it was a Ferret at first, but after looking again it looked way to lean to be a Ferret. The body was maybe a foot long with a tail probably 6-8" long.

The body looked about the diameter of a Polish sausage. Really long and lean.

I thought it had to be someones lost pet or something, but after looking on the net,the LT Weasel is actually pretty common in W.W.

They even mention that its not uncommon to see them in suburban settings.

It was pretty cool to see.

He didn't say split tailed weasel from Everett........

I'm not sure what a long tailed one is versus a regualr one.  Weasels are cool to watch though.  ANy member of that family is.

Wierd... I saw one Tuesday on Port of Tacoma Rd.

I'd never seen one before in WA, or heard of one for that matter. This little guy darted out into the road, then right back into the bushes. Brown body with a black tipped tail... about the same size as the one you're describing. I thought the only Weasles in Washington lived in Olympia!

There was a time when there were tons of Martens in the Cascades. I know of several guys that trapped them in the 50's and 60's. Found a few traps set in the notches of trees in the past.

My brother trapped them in the 80's. Marten that is.  Another animal worth seeing in the woods.  I can't believe you've seen three form the road.  Thats incredible luck.
