Title: DZ-32 question
Post by: Mongo Hunter on June 03, 2011, 09:07:52 AM
Hey guys! Finally got my DZ-32 set up and tuned in for me and while I was a wholesale sports I went ahead and put and arrow through the crono. I was just using gold tips but it came back at 260FPS, does that sound right? Im using the leaches that came on the bow, an X-coil stabilizer and 70lb draw. Limbsaver says on their web sight 330FPS, should the arrows make that big of a difference? Dont get me wrong the bow shoots great, even though I dont have alot of experiance with Archery yet, as long as I do my part I could stack arrows on top of one another. but shouldent it be shooting a little faster?

Bow companies inflate numbers. Yes arrows make that much of a difference. Its not all about speed.

Is there a better arrow I should be looking at? I was looking at the Carbon Express Carbon Hunters, they seemed like a good arrow and the price wasent so bad compaired to others I have seen.

You will not see the advertised speeds if you use the bow for hunting and follow the rules of Washington. The advertised speeds at 70lbs will be generated using a 350 grain bare shaft. Your minimun arrow weight at 70lb will be 420 grains to be legal in Washington. Gold tips are good arrows and the 55/75 should get you close to 420 grains if that is what you want.

Mongo since your just starting out I wouldn't worry so much about speed and just use what you have. A speed bow can be a whole different animal. My hunting bow shoots a 575gr arrow at 250 but the bow is rated at 318 but its a penetrator. My "speed" bow is shooting a 325gr arrow at 327 and if I'm not perfect on my form it will throw an arrow way futher off target than my hunting bow if I do something wrong. Remember you loose about 10fps per inch of draw length under 30" and 1fps per 6gr of arrow over 350gr

Like said the 330 is a IBO number bare shaft not hunting arrows, also like said you need a 420g arrow to be legal here to hunt with. With a 55/75 and a 100grain broadhead you should be right there. I would not worry about fps as much as how well you shoot the bow and how it preforms.

What's your draw length and total arrow weight?  That will help to know if you're in the ballpark for your setup.

If I remember right its 28" draw length and 70lb weight. I dont remeber the arrow weight but they are the Gold Tip Expedition Hunters if i remember right (Im not at home right now to check) and the guy at sportsmans said they were fine for a 70lb bow.

since your a 28" draw your gonna lose 20fps right out of the box. plus, string material, string leeches, peeps, d-loops will all slow your arrow down also. honsetly i wouldnt worry about it. if it shoots good you should be fine.

Cool I wont worry to much then, I may still pick up some nicer arrows for hunting but I wont worry about the speed anymore. Im just used to rifles and not haveing so much of a diviation in velocity. Im used to 100fps+/- or so out of 3000fps not 50+/- out of 300. This is first time archery hunting for me and Im really pickey about my gear in other things just so if there is a mistake its my fault not the equipment.

The goldtip exp are pretty decent arrows, .006 straightness and a pretty tuff arrow as well. My brother and wife shoot them. I shoot the xt's at .003 straightness and have taken 12 big game animals with them and always been happy with there performance and groups.

gotta look cool but you can't go wrong with gold tips they are about the toughest arrows i have come across. and the prices are usually very reasonable good luck once you start shooting the bow you might not go back  :chuckle:

I miss my gun a little but the season for Rifle sucks in Washington and part of the fun to me is just being out in the woods, Im not just out to kill things (although it helps :chuckle:). During Modern we get what, all of 19 days or so? Archery I get about 2 months give or take depending on where I go? Its a no brainer! I did Boomstick one year cause I heard it was better, and although its a better season then rifle maybe cause its a little later, there were still to many people. So I may retire Ol'Painless till I go back to Oklahoma and stick to archery for washington :).

I shoot the same bow as you, I have had it for 2 years now and i love it, i have a 74 lb draw weight, and 28 1/2 draw length on mine. With my gold tips it is shooting 272 fps and i also have the Easton Axis arrows that shoot 287 fps, like "button nubbs" said, the bow companies will always inflate the numbers to make the bow seem faster than other bows, It is definately fast enough to penetrate at 70, 80, 90, and 100 yrds for a kill as long as your shot placement is good. It is a very good and reliable bow and you will learn to be very comfortable with it, limbsaver makes a good product and they have a lifetime warranty if you buy them from the factory in Shelton. They will also usually do custom work for you if you ask, such as paper tune your bow, put protective line in your D-loop, custom line on your peep sight so it is sure not to move, and also will put line around the string of your fall away. I will never use a different bow than a limbsaver as long as they keep making their quality work the same or better.
Hope it works good for you

I shoot the Sims a lot and really enjoy it.  They say it is all about "Shootability" and it has that for sure.

The IBO speeds are obtained at IBO standards and to achieve that with the DZ-32 that means the Large cam is used.  If you got that Wholesale Sports screaming deal they had it probably has the small cam at 28" draw.  Depending on the length of your arrow the numbers don't seem that far off to me.

Duke Savora had a good saying in regards to speed, "I'd rather kill 'em at 200 than miss 'em at 400."  Speed is nice to have, but meat in the freezer is even nicer.

Welcome to the DeadZone!!!

Hey there,

I currently work at LimbSaver.  I really appreciate this post.  Thank you for the good feed back.  At LImbSaver we offer a Lifetime warranty on ALL our bows no matter where they were purchased.  The speeds you guys have are consistent with a LEGAL hunting arrow for Washington State.  Meaning you have to have 6 grains per pound of pull.  So 70lbs would require a minimum of 420grains for a hunting arrow.  That is 70grains more than an arrow used to get IBO.  Carpsniper is right, To get IBO you just need 350 grains at 30 Draw with a 70lb pull.  Most hunting setups are not even close to these numbers since most people dont have a 30 draw.

Thanks for the great feedback!
Corey
