Hey guys and girls. I'd like to see the biggest bears killed in WA. Weights if you know them, pics if you have them.
When I first started hunting, years ago, I had yet to kill a bear. I decided to go scouting up in NE WA in late May. I did not have a rifle or pistol with me and I decided to do some scouting. I hiked into a meadowy area that had a creek running meandering through the middle. I walked around looking for sheds. After a couple hours, I noticed about 250 yards ahead of me a large black bear, meandering through the same meadow I was in. He never saw me, and I got the hell out of there. I wasn't the best judge of size, but I had seen a few bears and that one looked like a large boar (better than average about 250lbs). Still scared the crap out of me...
I decided I had enough of hiking, and I though i"d drive around and scout some new areas. On the way to another area, I saw the biggest bear I have ever seen. It was a reddish black bear. I was driving down a gravel road and there was a small clearcut on the side of the road. I the middle was this huge bear. When the bear seen my truck, it ran to the edge of the clearing. I know the bear was big because its ass muscles rippled when he bounded through the clearcut. He looked like a giant bear in the zoo, thats been gaining weight all his life. As he got to the edge of the clearcut, he felt comfortable and he slowly moved through the trees for a bit. I watched him for a couple minutes total through binocs.
This was one of the most amazing things I have seen in WA. I've killed 3 bears the biggest about 200lbs and I guided my dad to his first bear that weighed 270lbs, so I know bear size a little.
The reddish bear I saw had to be in the 500lb range.
Lets see some pics and hear some stories of some monsters!

don't know the weight as we didn't put him on a scale. all I know was he was big enough that me and the wife couldn't drag him out of the hole I shot him in so we called my cousin who showed up with some cable and hooked it to the truck and drug him up to the road. he only had 3 legs as his front right leg was missing at the knee and had been for some time as it was all calloused over. not my biggest weight-wise as i shot one in colville in '93 that weighed more (guesstimate cuz it measured 6'4" nose to tail and this one was right at 6'2") and as we were dragging him into the truck my wife was pushing the rear end when it released onto her everything it had eaten in the last couple days....wow what a mess ! she still talks about that experience and i can still remember the smell of it riding back to town with her in the back seat---yikes ! wish I had weighed them....all i know is that they were what i would consider "nice bears"

big bear thanks for sharing :twocents:. j

I got spoiled on my first bear, thank god i could drive my truck within 50 yards of him, it took my buddy and i 30 min to drag him with ropes the 50 yards and could barly get him into my ranger. nose to tail 6'4 18 11/16 in skull. i literaly had to shave inches of fat off this guy. he had a broken ear, and where i shot him there wasnt a tree from miles and miles...
-
Well... I've only brought one home. +6' square. 300+. Belly nearly draggin the ground. OK, he had short legs. But that ain't nothing compared to a few of the 7' bears I know that members here have harvested. C'mon guys, post the 'well above average ones'!

All I have shot are scrawny bears. Waiting for more pics!
Nice bear Drew! HighCountry, what area? I have yet to find a bear that far from the woods before...
-
Riding dirt bikes in the Sultan watershed maybe 15yrs ago came around a corner and big ben was sitting in the road 10ft in front of us his sides rippled as he got up and walked away from us. Some guy out here in Kitsap county shot a 800# with a slug gun a couple years ago.
-
My two biggest. The black one was measured out at 400lbs. 20 7/8" skull. (1/8" off!) Didn't measure out the brown one but he was a beast too.
-
Nice bears guys those are some giant black bears.

That 3 legged bear was a warrior! I'd love to know the story on that...

Boy shot one by raymond that weighted 432 on certified scales and stollers in raymond did a mount for him.

I shot this springer a few years ago. I still have not beat it. he would have been a true fatty in the fall. I am 6' and 270# in the pic.

Here's a good one from a few years ago....
Here's the story,
I had been seeing huge bear scat in an area we were hunting and kept after the bear. My hunter had a shot on the 2nd to the last day at what I think was this bear and missed. Next day we killed a smaller bear and then I had to head for Idaho elk hunting so I told one of my guides Jeff (in center), to take his next hunter and watch that area.
They hunted a couple days and no luck, finally over the phone I suggested doing some little drives. Jeff would set the hunter up in a good location and walk through the brush. On one drive he came face to face with this bear in the brush, he didn't have a gun and the hunter was posted 200 yards away and didn't know what to do so he started yelling, it ran up the closest tree. Jeff hollered at the hunter who came down and did the deed.
So this bear was yelled up a tree... it weighed 456. :chuckle:
-
so how does one take a bear out this big whole? I hunt the same hills as you and I have had bears down on downhill to flat ground to roads and there is no way I am moving a 250lb bear...most awkward animals to handle once down.

haven't measured the skull yet but it'll be over 20".
-
Jeez Bluebulls, that's a STUD bruin! Looks like he's about 100 years old. If I ever draw a springer tag, you'll get a PM from me... :chuckle:
-
Bluebulls.....that is a very nice bear. Did you get the report back on his age? curious on how old he is.
-

worth their weight IN GOLD! couple it with a deer sleigh'er from cabelas to help keep the hide in good condition and slide over everything in it's path. what a combo!

They backed the truck as close as possible, tied a rope to the bear, pulled him out, and strained unknown parts loading him up..... :chuckle:
-
This one isn't quit as big as the last one I posted, and he's a springer.
I spotted this bear feeding along a small stream, we used the lay of the ground to stalk up close, but he had moved and when we came to where he should be, he wasn't there. We did a quick little run around, then I spotted him moving away, he had seen us, Jim hit him quartering away and it turned the bear straifght toward us, Jim dropped him cold deadon at about 30 yards, fun to say the least. We took photos, grunted a yard at a time, loaded him whole, and hoisted him up at home for the photo.
-
Nice color on that last one posted Dale. Nice bear.
-
Nice color on that last one posted Dale. Nice bear.
:yeah:
-
This was our biggest bear ever, taken when we could still run dogs. Where you see the picture is where the bear hit the ground, we rolled him over, took photos, and butchered him on the spot. We estimated 550 pounds, his hide was almost 8 feet long, guy shot him with a 41 magnum pistol, he had killed a couple smaller bear with me before, but it wasn't enough gun for this big bear and so it wasn't a real clean kill, took more than one shot.
We boned him out and it was still all that 4 of us could do to pack him all out for over a mile. This bear was #7 in sci with a pistol, not sure if it still has that rank. It was mounted on a large grizzly form that was modified to make it look like a black bear.
This bear did not have a huge skull considering how heavy he was, we get some good colors but our area doesn't produce the largest skulls. One of my hunting buddies has a B&C 21", and that is the biggest skull I know of from NE Washington.
(I've probably posted some of these pics before in other bear threads in the past, so probably not the first time on here for them.) :sry:

Great bears and great stories, guys...
-
I got a lifesize in to do this year , the hide was 8'3" nose to base of tail and 7'9" toe to toe. Approximate weight was 480 if I remember right. Weighed the quarters and the hide was another 100 pounds. Gona take a grizz form for this one :o

My son with his first bear last year. 6'6" and over 300 lbs. And you just can't take the goofy 12 yr old out of the hunter. :tung:

3nails....that's nothing short of awesome right there. Congrats to the young hunter.

Any way to talk to the hunter about posting a pic? Would love to see that.

Very cool 3nails!
A bear is way up there on PathfinderJR's list right now. Depending on what happens with the draws this year, I think he and I are going to make a serious run at getting him a bear this fall. Usually September gets devoted to my archery elk camp so bear hunting gets kind of neglected.
I'll show him this picture, that will cement our this year motivation I think.

i wish i could post the picture of the bear my cousin killed off of my bait back in the day before it was illegal, i couldnt hunt that day because my wonderful daughter was being born so my cousin decided to hunt my sight that night, and bang the biggest washington blackbear i have ever seen it weighed in at 556 pounds dont remember what the skull was, but it was a big ole boar and he killed it about 2 minutes out of orting, is there a way to post a picture of a poloroid ?

How old is he? I love seeing pics of kids and hunting! Good luck, make it happen.

alot of people put weight of bear to size of skull..I know of 2 bears that were 300 lbs with 21" skulls and the state record was maybe 400..closer to 375. My dad killed one around 500 lbs and the skull was 19 5/8"

Just turned 12. He took Hunter Ed when he was 8. Has harvested 3 deer, a turkey, and various small game, but no bear yet. Cool thing about kids is that you can put them in for almost every category in the draws (someday he'll thank me for building him points in the sheep, goat, moose, and quality deer and elk categories...), so he's in for all kinds of stuff this year.
Like I said, we'll see how the draws work out before we make any plans, but if he doesn't draw anything cool, we'll be making some serious bear-hunting plans...

Here's a big one my dad killed back in 83 or 84 I think. It's a Gig Harbor bear. He killed it less than a mile from our first house (back before Gig Harbor became infested with people and was known for big bears) This is the only pic he has of it. The skull was is over 19, I don't remember the exact. I'm not sure about the weight I'll have to ask him. He had it rugged and had it hung for ten years or so. When he built his second house, it was boxed up and mice got to it. Ended up giving it to a guy who hung it in his cabin in Teanaway. Last I heard pack rats got to it and chewed it all up. You can guess who the little bad a** is wearing the coon skin hat in the picture :chuckle:

great bears and stories guys. I can't wait for more. I hope to post a pic and storey of a nice bear this fall.

My biggest....
Monroe spring bear, 2009. 6'2" nose to tail.
18 1/4" skull. Gutted, it was 256 pounds (?), with its butt and back legs still on the floor...

Posted this one before but here it goes again. Not sure of the specs, haven't gotten the skull or hide back yet.Not the biggest but I was more than happy with him.

Very cool stories. I can't wait to take my daugther out hound hunting bears in Idaho three years from now. She will shoot a hog bear on ground. :chuckle:
Look forward to her first bear at age 8. She start to shooting 22. With me. She is getting there by more practices.

Kind of thought this thread would do better :dunno:
-
Wife's first! Did not get a length, but with hide on at the shop he weighted 385. Should put it close to 450. Back when I was guiding we had two in Oregon over 500 on the Newport, Oregon Bumblebee Tuna scales, but this is our best in Washington.
Scanner is on the fritz - sorry for the quality. If I get it fixed I'll send a better one.
-
now that the girls have broke in...LOL I'll add my bigest of the 8 I've taken with my bow . It was a spring tag in Cowlitz co, back in 85 I think. I shot this bear at 12 yards and he ran about 40 and piled up. We weighed him in at 451 +. He had been fighting and had bite marks all over him! His dried skull measured 20 inches and was the bigest bear taken by an archer that year.
-
Rad, your wifes bear is huge!! That's awesume!
Lots of great bears on here! Hears to bear hunting :brew:
-
some nice looking bear ladies....
-
Thanks Annette! I have been trying to get her to shoot one with the bow. She has taken quite a few deer and elk with the stick and string, but so far no luck on chasing the bear that way. I'll be taking her to Canada next year for spring bear. Maybe I'll tell her it is an archery only hunt. If she is like me it only takes one to be hooked on up close and personal bear hunting.
-
Monster Bear Annette!
-
I have only heard the story and did not see the bear. However about 14 years ago up on hill above Yard Birds in Chehalis a professional hunter was brought in by the state to clear out some bears. Supposedly he had gotten better than a half dozen in a weeks time with the biggest being 630 pounds.
I do not know the validity of the story, but I would think that there should be a way to check with the state.

We got this bear last year, it weighed in at 465 on a cattle scale. Here is a good example of a bear weighing alot but had a small head, I dont think he measured out to 17. He was a problem bear at the dump and was guzzling 5 gallon buckets of fryer grease when he could find them. He had about six inches of fat on him, it took three of us moving him about an inch a time to roll him down the hill and in to the back of my truck. Oh yeah taken with dogs, treed up in maybe a 15 foot tree i thought the tree was going to break under his weight.

The bear I got a couple years ago was around 300lbs live weight and its paws where 5.5" wide, skull would have been in washingtons book but I cracked it :bash:. when we pulled it up to skin it he was well over my head with his shoulders on the ground and im 6'1".

Yeah he was the biggest bear I ever got. We caught another problem bear last night he was a smaller at maybe 250 I might be giving him a little, when he was dropped out of the tree he ran right by me about a foot away in thick brush. It makes bear hunting a rush when your chasing in the dark.

Nice critters.
