Title: What is the speed of your bow?
Post by: MDGrand on June 06, 2011, 11:38:00 AM
Hey everyone... I tweaked my set up on my Firecat and was curious as to the speeds others are shooting.

Currently I have a Martin Firecat TR2, 67lbs, 29.5 draw. I am shooting Easton FMJ 350 with 100 grain tip, blazer veins, puts me right at regs at 400 grains + or - a grain.

Through the chrony I am shooting 267 FPS.

I am curious as to others on the board here... what is your set up and what speed are you getting?

With the regs being what they are, does anyone have a set up where they are at or well over 300 fps?

what do you mean by the way the regs are.My z7 was #62 29 inch draw 428grn shooting 271fps

WA regs require 6 grains per inch.

Often because of the regs here in WA it is tough to take advantage of the advertised speed on most bows.

My maxxis is shooting a 575gr arrow at 250fps.

My 82nd airborne is shooting a 325gr arrow at 327fps. 5.4gpp it will go over 300fps at 6gpp

My bow chrono's at 282fps.
Hoyt Alphamax 32 64#, 30" draw, my arrows are around 420 grains all up.

per inch or per # of draw weight?
Title: Re: What is the speed of your bow?

per # of draw. So a 70# bow needs a 420g arrow to be legal.

sorry per pound of draw weight

This is my setup.

PSE X FORCE! Here are my stats for diffrent situations.

Washington hunting "to be legal" 450g arrow at 75lbs= 307fps KE=94
New Zealand/areas that don't have a min arrow weight. 450g arrow at 83lbs= 323fps KE=104
3d shoots if I change from my washington setup 375g arrow 75lbs= 332fps KE=92

Thanks, Carp.

compared to others I seem to be a bit slow for the weight I have... maybe another trip to Nock Point is in order :)

No prob  I would talk to them about maybe using the 400 spine arrows. the 350's to me seem a bit stiff for your setup at 67lbs. I would also bet your arrows right now are way on the + side of 400g being the 350's with a 100grain head. You need to be 402 to be legal at you weight right now. But I would get a arrow that is around the 420 mark so you can go up to 70 pounds "if you want later on" and still be legal. Some people on here have a program that can tell you the spine of the arrow that is best for your setup. I think the 400 would be more along the lines you want and will save weight and gain you speed.

Well, I was using the 400s before.. the have a grain p/inch of 11.2 as opposed to the 10.2 for the 350s.. I shot both and obviously the 400 at 11.2 is slower.

Right now a 29" arrow @10.2 = 295 + the tip of 100 grains and 4 blazer veins put me right at 400..

I will say this though.. the FMJs sure to seem like they hit a whole lot harder.

howdy i was just on easton web site the 340 are 11.3 and the 400 are 10.2 so your arrow wieght is actually more than you think approx 29grns more wick would make alittle more sense with your speed

11.3 x 29 = 327.7 100grn head 100 4blzer? prob close to 430+/-a grn

Yeah, sorry, I got those mixed up. I WAS shooting the 340.. now I am shooting the 400..

Correct with blazer's and inserts and Nock+ broadhead. I would figure about 440g was my guess. So you could go a little lighter, but if the stiffer spines shot better I would stick with them.

Oh O.K. that makes a lot more sense now :chuckle:

My first trip I took to NZ, I used the FMJ'S for the first time. They do hit very HARD! In practice I would lose a few arrows to bending, but for penetration the fmj's are the best. I liked the way they preformed on the animals and shot. I still prefer my goldtip arrows and that is what I will stick with.

do you guys realy worry about speed that much. im shooting my mission 29' draw at 60", with CE pile drivers cut a lil long to add weight. im pushing right about 500 grns at about 245-250 fps. my bow is damn near silent at 10 yards. and i still managed to blow through both shoulders on my mulie last year. it was lil forward i know. lol

Speed is not that important, compared to shot placement. It does help and being able to shoot flatter is nice.
Title: Re: What is the speed of your bow?
Post by: MDGrand on June 06, 2011, 02:56:59 PM
let it fly and Carp..

yeah, I know that shot placement is above all else.. I am just looking to get the flatest shot I can to 40-50 yards.

i will definetly agree with you there. miss judging range by five yards at 300 fps vs 250 can be the diference between a low heart/lung shot and a complete miss. i learned that one real fast shooting 3d's. of course when hunting im using a range finder.

Oh I understand. I was just talking to let it fly, I was just answering his question. mdgrand I understand what you are saying and what you are wanting. Just saying speed isn't everything which everyone understands.
Title: Re: What is the speed of your bow?

My first pin with my target arrows is good to 40y and with my hunting arrow I shoot one pin to 35 yards. It's pretty sweet! So I understand wanting a flatter shooting bow/arrow combo.

flat is great amd all and you could definetly get away with shooting that fast with a light arrow. its just preference. i preffer slower and quite with tons of KE. but my bow isnt that fast to begin with. with my bow set up for 3-d i am barely breaking 295. id say if you can get away with pushing a 500 grn arrow past 300 fps your getting the best of both worlds. but for me once im at 500 even maxed out at 73-74 lbs im only get 270ish so i will save my shoulders and go around 60 lbs

hey carp while we got ya. im trying to find a good arrow set up for my long bow, i want to hunt with it this year and need recomendations. it shooting "the stick" at 50 or 55 at 29" cant quit remember. i have shot a couple diferent arrows. i wana stay with a carbon shaft. but am not sure what broadhead to use or spine choice or basicaly anything. i just know heavier arrows seem to be more forgiving for me.

I really like a carbon arrow as well even though I do shoot some traditional wood arrows and make a few stone points. The best arrow for me and my recurves at 50-55 and 60#'s is a tapered carbon arrow dynamics. They hit hard and shoot great! As for a head I really like the magnus buzzcuts 2 blade or 2 blade with bleeders. You do want a heavy arrow with the trad gear. Another great head with or without the bleeders is the zephyr. Here is a link to them.

They also make a smaller one called the scirocco.

If you want to go more traditional, look at the good old ben pearson dead heads. My fave "older" broadheads of all time! They are spendy and the other heads are a little better for killing power. I just love to screw those old heads on  Something about it makes my heart beat faster.

I have a 57 lb long bow and get around 170 fps with 500 gr arrow. Have shot through quite a few deer.

Luv the BP deadheads. I have a 1/2 doz from the 1960's from my Dad when he bow hunted.

Have shot 3 does with them. Big holes!!

My bow shoots 1 billion feet per second. My arrows break the sound barrier everytime I shoot. My arrows are made of minerals found in meteors, because nothing else can handle the heat cause by all the friction ( from the speed of the arrow going through the air ). I know the deer don't duck my arrows because they get there before the sound of the shot. I even think its faster than light. I have no idea what my rest is...it looks like charred lava rock though.

My KE is off the chart...I have to shoot my elk through the shoulders so I have at least the hind quarters left to eat!

My Broadheads aren't sharp at all...but they can survive shooting through brick walls and super mans buttocks.

My sight is a high output semi conductor green light laser...got a 2200 mile sight pin dopped in today.

MW (aka Marvin Wafflehouse )  would call me a bone collector because with my high speed bow, from here were I live...I can shoot deer in Alabama...I'm that good...and so IS my ultra fast, Hi speed, arrowdynamic, self centering, fire bolt of lighting, that rains down death and distruction all over the planet.

I'm the new Rambo...cause my bow DOES shoot down helicopters..even fighter jets, heck even polar satellites.

When I shoot this bow...Opie isn't the only one who says "GOLY that was swell pa"

I'm fixin to kill me one of them that 42 inch main beamed bucks with palmaded front G1 and and them thar dropped off tines.

Just kidding guys...just having a little fun

MDGrand - I thought the 400 FMJ was spined way too light for the TR2 at 67#/29.5.  Also was not sure how you are getting 400 grains from the FMJ.  So I just put your info into Archers-Advantage figuring your shooting a 29" arrow at that 29.5" draw. Still not sure where that 400 grain FMJ is coming from.

Anyhow, AA shows the 400 spine arrow is leaving optimum spine at 49# of draw weight.  Perhaps your not getting the speed because that arrow is trying to fold in half at 67#!  Just a thought.

Following AA, which I have come to trust, the 300 FMJ fits spine better using the info you've provided.  Though that really messes up your FOC if your using a 100 grain point.  Estimated speed with Blazers and no wrap 287 fps.  All carbon Axis 300 should leave you just shy of 300.

Martin bows are usually over rated in their speed listing.  But yes I would agree you should be faster than you're showing.
