Just curious, again, how many have seen or encountered a grizzly in this state, another of the Protected species, and how did you handle the encounter.
-
Seen them in Pullman. Of course that is in the cages they house them. Spoke to a gammy just north of Usk that talks about some griz ranging in the area out of Canada but never seem one in person in the wild.
-
Theres quite a few big boys in Pend Orielle Co. northeast part. Ive heard of one male that was a giant, however I never saw him personally. Kinda makes you want to sleep a little closer to ol Dirty Harry while in the woods thats for sure.
-
Ya in 2001 ,Hunting moose in the selkirks we saw a little boar walking down the road in Mill creek.
-
I think last year some guys poached one and tried to hide it and got busted. They are around for sure. I have never seen them myself.
-
Mill Creek road is exactly were I spoke to gammy. Love the Mill Creek Road area.
-
There was one that live not too far off Stevens Pass for many years...Forest Circus kept telling me it was a cinnamon blackie...I know better. They were not wanting to scare the granola crunchers.
-
Yes. Northport about ten years ago. Canadian collared bear I figured. Snuck within 50 yards and got pics with a disposable camera.
-
There's a valley, northwest of Cady Pass. 'I' am confident at what I saw. Three years ago. Rumor had it, (spoke to a camp host that saw him once), that there was a young male hanging around west of Black Pine Lake. A few sightings from those that should know the difference, but nothing confirmed by a bio that he knew of. There was one on the north slope between Rainy and Washington passes last year. Pretty sure that was confirmed. I've seen some tracks in Indian Heaven that fit the bill, but nothing actually making them at the time.

northport area..few times

I haven't seen one in the wild in Washington but my dad and uncle saw one several years during a elk hunt about 10 miles in from Packwood.

Ok.....Now I gotta share what was told to me. (I have not seen any in Wa.) but I have owned land up around there for 20+ years now. Last sept. I saw a couple (as in people) looking to buy the land next to me....figured they would buy the land after they looked at it (beautiful piece but a little over priced) so I called John...the local realtor. I asked him if there were people interested and he told me they were ready to sign papers, they just wanted to go look one more time for survey markers (Thats when I saw them walking back in on the property) but they came back shaking and scared because they said they saw a grizzly back in there that wouldn't run away from them.....said it just stared at them while they were backing out. They saw a black bear their first trip out there but the grizzly got to them mentally and they didn't want the land.....said they were going looking farther south and west a little bit.
Now...I take everything with a grain of salt but what makes this interesting is what happened the day before.
The day before, me and a buddy were down at KUK's tavern (oldest est. tavern in the state of Wa., 1888) belly up to the bar, enjoying a cold beverage. We were talking to a local and he asked where my place was. I told him "just past the Waneta boarder crossing" and the first words out of his mouth was ....BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, he had see a grizzly cross the road in front of his truck just past the big aspens the day before. Said he was 100% positive it was a grizz....middle of the day. Do I believe it.....with those two stories....yes, I do.
Like I've said.....I have never seen them but I do know they are there. Talked to a game officer before about the collared one, my buddies have seen a momma and a cub out towards Sullivan lake.
-
There are numerous confirmed sightings across the river from you. I know a WDFW agent who saw some of them himself. I am sure with Grizz west of you and east of you, eventually you will have grizz livin with you... :chuckle:
almost to forgot to mention, i have never seen one either...
-
25 years or so ago above Lake Chelan and one near Vulcan Mt. in Ferry County.
-
you know bearpaw, as far as im concerned, if you aint seen one, then there ain't one to be seen. :)
-
Yeah they let some grizz go quite a few years back around Fourth of July Mtn. next to Leclerc creek. They blocked a section of road off where it paralleled the stream for a few miles and built a new road around it. I wish they would make an effort helping out the elk like they help the grizz and wolfs but thats another thread in itself!
-
I saw a grizzly bear while scouting for my Moose tag in the Selkirk unit in 2009. He was only 20 yards away so he wasn't that hard to identify. ;)
-

Scan those babies in. I would love to see them .
-
Saw one by Rock lake off of highway 20 about 4 years ago. He came out on the trail about 70 yards from us. There was no question that he was a griz. Its the only grizzly Ive seen outside of Yellowstone. And a very cool experience!
-
this is just heresay but a buddy was down around walla walla somewhere ( in the blues) this last weekend and said he saw momma with two cubs :dunno:

Me too (I think...)
Probably 18 years ago in the Sawtooth Wilderness North side of Lake Chelan. Steep steep steep area with goats nearby occasionally even under us... I was spotting the far rock face where we used to see Muleys come down so they could migrate thru...and I saw the bear, took two crappy pics with my 35mm at probably 400 yards... Bear moved straight down this boulder impass in literally under a minute, a feat it would take muleys five minutes to navigate. Bear went right over and down. I called my dad on a handheld cb to warn him since the bear would pop up on the game trail my dad was sitting on...reading a book. No answer on the cb...figured he fell asleep again... So I frantically packed my bag and started bolting down the mountain looking for my dad. I finally got close enough to yell bear to him and he scoped the bear at probably 300 yards directly across the canyon. He also saw grizzly. Scary big, scary fat and too GD close. Bear heard us, and scanned the canyon looking and smelling for us, then boogied back straight up the canyon and was gone. Whole incident maybe four minutes.
Wildlife wanted the pics.....and I did not cooperate, or share the exact locale...
What I remember the most is watching his rippling body as he climbed over nearly vertical car size boulders like they werent even there... Scared the bajeezus out of me... Made my trusty ol' .270 feel sort of insignificant...
-
there was one hanging around sheep creek campground 7 years ago..fish and game told us we should leave...hour before it had come into a guy cooking at his cabin ..the guy fired a gun into the ground and it wandered off. About 2 weeks later we saw this bear up above in a clearcut, loggers we talked to said they saw it several times throughout the summer.
When I was 13 hunting with my dad we watched one from a distance while bear hunting up on muraski mt on the Canadian line.
-
I have a close friend who has seen a couple in the Blues a few years ago. It was by the wilderness and he was within 50 yds of em on his horse. It wouldn't surprise me if there are more in Washington than we know of, maybe they are reclaiming their old haunts or something.
-
Glad to hear grizzlies come to Vulcan Mtn. area -- they could come to my backyard. We get cougs occasionally in the Curlew area. We're not the only hunters in the world!
-
I believe we saw one on the NE side of Mt. Baker a few years back. We couldn't get close enough to confirm, but the tracks were huge.
-
I saw one in a trap that was being moved from washington to Montana. Only one I have seen

It was one of those trailer traps. I pulled into a rest area next to this truck with a oversized trailer. said stay away but I had to look.. it was sleeping. They guys were nice enough to let me look closer . they say they do it a couple times a year. one time they transported the same bear twice within three years.

Mid 90's in the Pasayten.... we went in from Chancellor, just past Harts pass. We had hiked in just above Anacortes Crossing, and seen a nice boar working down a slope towards a meadow. Sat and glassed him for about an hour. On the way out to Chancellor the next day we saw a tree scraped up about 10 feet high... not peeled... clawed. Only one I know for sure was a grizz in this state. Saw one in Idaho and many in Yellowstone. When we told the Rangers at HArts pass, they didn't look surprised, first question was "Did it have a collar?" THen wanted to know a location on the map.... This was back when they were still saying there were no grizzlies here.
-
Wheres was the one that was mistakelny shot east side I thought. I ahve always heard of guys seeing E side but I have never personall seen. Lot bear sign.... Kinda like Sassquatch, there out there but smart!!! :yike:

huntnnw, I don't know how old you are (I'm geussing between 35 and 45....more or less :chuckle:) but there is no doubt we have crossed paths up there......no wonder theres no deer up there. :chuckle: The grizz up by sheep creek was the one I thought had a collar on it. :dunno: I could be wrong. That must be why they hung all those little "KNOW YOUR BEARS, THERE ARE GRIZZLY HERE" signs. I used to hunt up muraski for bear....but not for a good number of years now. Used to be a lot of bears up there......no bears left there now either. :chuckle:
-
I am sure we have :chuckle: been going up there since I was born...I hunt bears up there alot and elk here and there..use to chase deer up there when there was deer left :bash: I am 32. I know quite a few of the locals..some of the phillips and Art the owner of the cabins in town is a good friend of mine.

Bach in 2002 Boneaddict was hunting his WA. moose in Laclerc Cr. near the Idaho border. I was there with two ride/pack mules, while Bone was hunting one day I was exercising the mules and doing a little scouting in a different area, a couple miles behind a gate was some nice looking country, I was riding along enjoying the afternoon when right in front of me a baby bear scampered across, I thought that little guy sure is cute as I watched him, then another little guy did the same, DAMN those are grizzly cubs and mom must be close by, I did a very calm smooth U turn and never looked back, didn't want mom or the mules to think anything was wrong. But my mind was making a plan if she did charge, turn one mule loose and try to stay on the other one, it was not a good place to have a race. We had a couple other grizzly encounters that trip but those were the only ones I actually seen.
-
two years ago me and a buddy found tracks in a dried cattle wallow. up near randevuex pass. a couple ridges north of there. kinda near eight mile creak up the chewuch.
-
My grandpa has seen tracks of Grizzlies in Indiana Heavens and Goat Rock areas. He'sa biologist. So he knows what he's talking about. I just know when we go hiking up there. He's packing 2 handguns and he always make sure i know where one is and know how to use it if i have too.
-
In 2007 I was scouting for a high buck hunt, seen one on the south creek trail on the methow river. There were signs at some of those trail heads that said it was are recovery area for the griz. Told a park ranger at the camp ground what I had seen, She said that they are in there but the last sighting was five years earlyer. I love hunting bears and have seen alot positive it was a griz.
-
Elk season 1981 saw tracks in a clear cut above Metaline Falls.
-
25 years or so ago above Lake Chelan and one near Vulcan Mt. in Ferry County.
That time line is the same as what a forest service back country employee told me.. He collected and had confirmed hair samples.
-
my father had one cross the road in front of him on chinnook pass up towards the top almost hit him in the truck and it wasn't small
-
Back the late 90's we used to spend two weeks every year hunting bear at the end of August up the Twisp River Valley. We would usually camp up around Mystery Camp or somewhere in that general vicinity and we always seen bears. We did a lot of hiking and got off the beaten path quite a bit, so it didn't seem that hard to find bears.
We seen a sow with cubs up the North Creek trail in '97 out on the a grassy hillside. We watched them for an hour at about 500 yards through the spotting scope before they finally moved out of sight. I have seen a lot of black bears and these were definitely grizzly bears.
In '98 we bumped into another grizzly about 150 yards away from us when we were hiking up into the state land back off of Frost Creek Road. We made it back by Aspen lake, which is about 1/2 mile if memory serves me right. We were headed back by Moccasin Lake when we seen him and he was heading the same direction, so we decided to double back hunt a different area.
Those were my two encounters, but that's enough for me. I haven't hunted up in that area for years, but I would guess that there are still a few grizzlies kicking around those parts.

These bear were seen by several people over a 2-3 year period. I made a few trips to see them but never did, I did see a lot of sign, got into their beds on the timbered side. I think Boneaddict has a story to tell about an encounter early one morning.
-
Not sure what year it was, but in that time frame 93-97 probably. I was bear hunting in there and was investigating a bear feeding down in the creek. If anyone has beenin there they should know how thick it is. I snuck down the hill and got where I could see a small opening. Out walks a grizz cub and then another, and then mom walked out. NICE. As fun as it would have been to sit and watch them, I just backed out. I quit bear hunting in there as well. I believe Idabooner and another cowboy friend found lots of evidence of a boar in there as well. (Guess you need one to make cubs.)
I’ve got a couple other adventures as well with them here in Washington.
-
I was calling moose on the Wa/ID border. Idabooner was down the road. He was waiting until dark to come to me. I was sitting there with my bow cow calling and grunting. All of a sudden I hear a twig snap behind me. I gently turned. Moose can sneak in just as easy as they can come full bore. About 30 feet behind me was a nice Grizz. Face to face with the longbow in my hands. THANKFULLY he spooked and relocated. Funny thing is he relocated in the direction of Idabooner who was slipping down the logging road in the dark.

Remember: it's OK to run from a bear if you can outrun your hunting partner!
-
I'm sure he would appreciate that. :chuckle:
And then there was the one that kept stalking us while packing out my moose. He was VERY CLOSE (within feet) and the mules knew it……. That’s a story I will always shake my head at. The mules were insane.

Wow, that must've been intense. :yike:

I had a grizz take a elk from me in 2008 just south of the molibdenite mountain summit ,just a few miles from lecerick creek . i would say it was between 500-700 lbs . just a bow in hand . I have never put three hundred yards between me and a critter so quick in all my life . I had elk blood on my pants from tracking it through the brush not a good feeling. when i came out and talked to a local he said the year before one killed a moose not thirty yards from where we had our tent set up !
-
A lot of talk about seeing one but no pictures to prove. :dunno: :chuckle:
I know I've seen one before up in 113 but no picture to prove it...but I think my cousin got a picture of it. But its been a couple years now so who knows where the picture is now.
-
A lot of talk about seeing one but no pictures to prove
feel free to buy an expensive camera, spend your life out int he woods carrying it, instead of hunting since its hard to do both and get us some pics. :)
-
My best friend took this picture just last week up in NE Washington!

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I saw one in 96 up around the salmonlasac area. And no bone No pic for proof.

I was just kidding with the picture thingy...just saw an open to use the attached picture lol.
But a picture would be great though since I'm sure everyone loves to read with pictures and it doesn't have to be quality top of the line cameras but rather kodak disposables are fine :hello:
My best friend took this picture just last week up in NE Washington!
Believable since Grizzlies and Bigfoot are rare and hard to find in WA lol
Love the close encounter stories too keep em coming

Every photo is good. I take 40,000 a year or more and only get about 1/4 that I want. Thats what made me start taking photos. No one believed what I saw. :chuckle: I'd say I saw 20 bucks today and people would be like ya right. So then I had to take pics of all of them. But sometimes its more fun just to sit and watch them.

If you are talking about Cady Pass on the PCT north of Skykomish you are probalby correct in what you saw. I know a local LEO who works with the Forest Service and SAR and he was telling me there was one up near there. Some reports have been around the Troublesome Mt off of Index Galena Rd. just west of the Cady Ridge. Nobody want to confirm it officially it seems. Some say its a big Blackie too :dunno: It would be neat to see it.

I know 49deg noth ski area had a grizz on their slopes for 2 consecutive summers hanging out

Up out of Ione I saw a large bear moving quickly away that i thought could have been a grizz, especially after the sign I found later in the day. main reason i am posting is i was stayiny in newport and was eating and drinking at kellys. 2nd oldest bar in washington haha
-
Have seen one up at SWEETGRASS BUTTE over in WINTHROP and the other one was up at Harts Pass.
-
There are a few down the street from me. They were in some wildlife movie back in their younger years. Now when I drive past their fence, I can see them trying to get people's attention to give them bread. I'm always hoping that during a big storm a tree will fall and knock down the fences, then all the animals will come over to my yard. Grizzlies, bison, lions....let the safari begin!

I haven't seen them but family has a cabin on Sullivan lake and during the summer the forest service is always putting up flyers warning of grizzly sightings up there. One year they had so many sightings they had closed a few of the trails for awhile. One guy that lives up there was having a grizz coming to his house a couple times a week harassing his place that was 5-6 yrs ago.
-
Saw one on a ridge with a buddy backpacking in the Sawtooth's, we got a very good look so I am sure of what we were looking at. We didn't camp on the ridge that night as expected and quick footed the remaining 7 miles out that night.
-
I actually came across a Grizzly up in Skate Creek near the base of Mount Rainier this year. First time seeing one in Washington. He was huge, I had my spotting scope on him as he crossed a small clearing into some timber. It was hard to judge just how massive he was, but a few hours later two deer popped into the same clearing and they looked miniscule compared to the bear that we had seen hrs before. It was definitely the sight of a lifetime. I didn't believe myself that there could be a grizz around Mt. Rainier National Park, but after doing some research, there is a sparse population in the area. Has anyone else seen one around that area?
-
I just saw one about 20 minutes ago. I expect to see it again tomarrow in the same place.

I would be suprised if he even moves a inch! :chuckle: If I am following along right :chuckle:

It will continue to move all night more than likely.
