Title: bears and the foxpro spitfire

which call on the foxpro spitfire do you think, or have had bears come into? Thanks for any help, and for reading the post :hello:

Post by: saylean on June 12, 2011, 07:55:35 PM: I have a foxpro spitfire...only used it one season, but i dont recall using it for bears...I usually like to use mouth calls for bears...I have been trying to use the spitfire for yotes....still think im better off using mouth calls....

ANYWHO, ...Try if you have the sound, pup in distress....I had a bear come barrelling up a road at me once with pup distress mouth calling....Never know what might come in...

Good luck. I plan on trying to use it a bit more this year...

Post by: ouchfoss on June 12, 2011, 08:26:32 PM: I called one in last august with my spitfire using cottontail for about 10 minutes and I switched to fawn bleat and finally noticed him coming in about 1 minute using the fawn. Im betting he was already on the way when he heard the cottontail distress though so it probably doesnt matter what call you use.

Post by: seth30 on June 12, 2011, 08:28:21 PM: i think the hardest part will be not shooting the yotes as they come. Seems they always come in fast and stupid when Im not hunting them. I plan on doing a 45 minute stand for each spot along my honey hole.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on June 13, 2011, 05:43:59 PM: We have done fairly well using calls to call bears. I like the elec calls for the cats and bears. Hard to sit on stand for 1-1.5hrs and just use a mouth call, even though I prefer a mouth call to a elec call. I have a foxpro, the sounds we have had the best luck with is the bear cub distress,fawn bleat,fawn distress.

Look at whats in the areas. If there is a lot of elk in the area try the elk calf call.

Also stay on stand for at least 45Min's with bear they can tend to take more time coming in then most would think. I have yet to see a bear run in like a yote.

Also curious if you successful guys leave the volume consistent throughout the 45 minutes or do you change it quite a bit??? Haven't had any luck with my Spitfire yet and I'm starting to think I just need to set it and leave it the hell alone....

Post by: seth30 on June 20, 2011, 09:06:36 AM: I adjust it when I think I hear something coming in, or if the squirrels start going nuts. i will either mute, or lower it slowly, then raise it slowly back up. Otherwise I leave it full blast. I'm still learning though, hope my input helps.

Be mindful...nature will often tell you something is coming...ie, squirrels dont just yell at us hunters in the woods.

They have tipped me off to animals lots of times, both predator hunting and deer hunting.

I play with mine. I never leave it the same and try to turn it down if there is time when I see a bear. Sometimes they like to come in fast :chuckle: Most times they will be smart and come in slow with the wind in there nose. Or they will try to get the wind. I shot my first bear why calling for them at 43 yards. He stopped behind a bush and all I could see was his mellon and he had his nose in the air. So he got the old 300wm mellon punch! A lot of people like to start loud, DON'T! call soft first if there is something close they are more likely to come in then if you start on full blast!
