Title: New Disc Extreme! Shooting update...
Post by: teanawayslayer on June 13, 2011, 12:08:46 PM
It finally came today.  I love it and haven't even put a round through it.  I put the williams fp sight on right after I got it.  I had to mount it in front of the breech because the bolt would not clear the sight.  It still is a lot further back than the factory sight.  Here's a few pics.

Awesome!!! Thought you were doing the plain black stock...  I really like that setup... I assume you got the Western Setup also?

I was going to get the carbon stock but I ended up with this one.  Gordy said if I didn't like it that he would send me the carbon one.  I have had it for an hour and it's growing on me fast. Yep got the western kit.  I like the action on this gun.  It seems so stout.  My x-150 felt really cheap compared to this action.

The barreld action on a Knight is one of the strongest ML actions on the market.  It is solid and it is tuff.  Knights can shoot 150 grains of loose T7 if you so chose to do so... do not know why you would but you could.

Good looking rifle. Price if you don't mind me asking?
Any local dealers selling them that you know of?

I paid 450 after shipping.  Knight screwed up my order big time.  I originaly ordered a bighorn and ended up with the disc for 20 cents more.  I think through knight they were asking 549 for the disc.  I know the dealers are selling the bighorn for around 350-400 depending on what stock you wanted.  I don't know what they are asking for the disc.  I think there are few dealers around that have them in stock.

Right on dude. Looks sweet. Glad you finally got it. I wonder if you got a different peep site, like the one I have on my gun, if you would be able to move it all the way back.  :IBCOOL:

You know I was wonderingthe same thing... call Steve and ask him about it?  I would think they would offer one for the rear scope mounts. I looked at mine last night and there is now way the FP mount for a Big Horn would work on a DISC... the bolt handle would lift into the peep...  Check with him see what he says - I think I need to know also...

Here's the one that should fit your gun. I have the one for the Black Diamond and the Big horn. Works great for me. You don't have as many screws in it that you might loose. Mike and Justin both have that same model you have. One time when we went shooting Mike found that one of the set screws was missing. And on our Alta trip last fall he lost his aperture, and we found out later that Justin lost his to. Use some locktite on that sob.

Hoping to make it down some time this summer.  Find a black tail hog and I might show up for deer season.  I do have a multi season permit.

Took it out to the range today.  I was using a 100 grains t7 3f with 290 grain barnes tmz.  I was very happy with the way the gun performed.  I shot around 11 shots and was within a 3 inch group at a 100 yards.  This was the most fun I have had shooting a smoke pole. the gun is very comfortable.  I can't say that about to many rifles.  I would give this gun a ten.  Can't wait for my first trophy with the new Iron.

Hey sabotloader.  I see what you were talking about with the breech plug.  That hole is pretty small.  I am going to have to have it drilled out.

Hey sabotloader.  I see what you were talking about with the breech plug.  That hole is pretty small.  I am going to have to have it drilled out.

Correct...

This is a comparison of the older MK-85 plug and the Western Plug.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv130%2Fsabotloader%2FArchive%2FComparisonPlugs.jpg&hash=1726361aa28bc1badb0d823e2641916338e92703)

I drilled mine out like this... It allows the powder to drop right on the nipple - if you do not pour the powder in to fast that it clogs the passage...

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv130%2Fsabotloader%2FArchive%2FBPOpenPowderPort.jpg&hash=85b4c78f42140d4edbef65dd900b6090449d0ec2)

I turned these thought into Knight a few weeks back, and Gordy has now and is making the change in the Western BP to reflect this change.  I got two new ones the other day they are perfect.

If you want to send it over here and I will drill if for you...

I was working with my Western Kit today, showing a local dealer, and now I have a question for you..

When you shot you gun were you using #11's or Musket Caps?

If you were using #11's how did they fit on the nipple post?  Today while placing caps on and off I noticed on my Knight Red Hots - the cap did not fit real snung, in fact several fell off the post.  That is not the way a #11 should fit, so now I am curious about your experiance.  I ended up switching out the Red Hot for another nipple I had on hand and the caps were really tight on it.  The way they are suppose to be.

Didn't you say the first cap didn't go off?

That can happen especially if you did not have the secondary safety screwed all the way off.

It just something I do all the time - tighten the secondary to the off position.  I have even gone to the point of adding teflon paste to the post to keep the gun vibrations from vibrating the secondary safety to the on position.

With the DISC and Western Kit installed the one good thing is that the cap does not have any room to fall off but in a Big Horn - that would really be possible.  Just gotta get the right nipple installed.

That's one of the reasons I have not go into knight rifles. I have seen first hand that 2nd safety mess up hunts. When you pull up to make that shot and you go click it's not a good feeling. I was with a hunter that shot a cow and it needed another one. When we got up to it, he went to shoot it and click no bang! Then the cow took off. He had it off but it worked it's way back on enough to keep the gun from going off. That was not a fun chase!

I have thought about a knight a few times but havent done it yet. Not sure if I will or not I don't like problems.

It wasn't a bighorn that didn't go off. Late November hunt. 10-15 degrees out and a foot or more of snow. The only times I've ever had a muzzy not go off is when I was trying to shoot an animal. Both times where at bull elk. Luckily the first one stuck around long enough and I was able to recap and get him. But no such luck the second go round, even worse was the guy sitting 6 feet to my left didn't have a clear shot.  :bash:

A lot of folks do not like the secondary safety, I am not one of them they are often very handy.  As for its operation, once you become familiar with the gun it never becomes a problem... it is just something you are aware of - I really never even think about it any more -  it is just automatic.  Yet a little bit of paste teflon takes care of the whole problem.  The gun is just such a good gun it is not worth the worry.

But what it really comes down to is 'know your gun'

I am not sure what caused the problem, but that is one of the reasons I am so particular about the fit of the cap on the post. it is like been there done that one also, myself...  Now, if the cap does not go on correcty and tight so it does not move I will not chance it.  Last night I was going through all the #11 nipples I had in my raange box looking for the what I call the good one.  All of the nipples work but I will not hunt with all of them.

I was using cci #11 mag caps and they seemed to be pretty tight for the most part.  I had a few that were loose. I think it was just an imperfection in the cap itself.

In my world they really do need to be tight - so tight infact that they have to be pried off with a sharp edge tool like a knife blade.

When they are applied that tight they can be used in the worst weather conditions, but even then I wrap the breech with plastic wrap, while raining or snowing.

The big thing is a tight cap keeps the moisture in the air out of the powder.

AMPCO makes nipples that are oversized for CCI and Remington caps.

Yeah but in the heat of the moment, and running threw brush and a animal jumps up. The last thing you are thinking about is the 2nd saftey. People tend to fall apart when a animal is infront of them or after they knock one down. If I ever bought one I would fix it so I would never have to worry about it

Well, thats because you are young and really go get em... I have had to change my ways now that fathere time is pushing so hard.  So it takes a little more thinking on my part to figure out a way to snare em.

This guy did not come out whole - but we were able to get to him - it was a chore even for the Kawasaki to get him out.  He was a decent sized bull
