UPDATE: Stevens Co. dogs killed; was one a wolf hybrid?
A vicious dog pack responsible for killing more than 100 domestic animals in the past few months will kill no more. They are all dead.

Good - thanks Dave

I wish it were Diamond Pack. At less some.dogs are dead.
Mulehunter.

So there were only two dogs?
-
It listed 3 killed in our local paper....
-
Awesome.
-
more than 100 kills & only three dogs ? wow, glad the got them.
-
I know of one dog that killed a Sitka Blacktailed deer out in an open area. It was a shepherd X Rodesian ridgeback female. Goats in a fenced pasture or pen haven't a chance against even 2 dogs and one looking like a wolf X.
Glad those are dead.

Can't stand how the News always reports "..dogs are allowed to run free in Steven's Co. as long as they behave...." HORSEHOCKY.
Nobody wants anyone else's dogs on their property, but its only enforced by owners that catch them.
-
I agree littletoes, we have a lot of wildlife that is chased, harrassed, and even dies because of all the dogs running loose throughout the county.

:yeah:
Not to mention all us hunters that are harrassed in Stevens by free ranging "pets". It's almost impossible to go into the woods anymore south of Chewelah without running into dogs that will just as soon chase you as they will wildlife.
-
I just heard from a neighbor last night that a fawn was killed just outside our neighborhood by a couple of dogs that were running loose. I saw a couple dogs along the road a couple weeks ago with their tongues hanging like they'd been chasing deer..........now I know that they really were. :bash:
-
isnt there a rcw about dogs running loose? If I can an aggresive dog that wanted to try and chase me or any game animal it would be time to take care of it :mgun:
-
Yeah. If I'm out hunting and a Dog acts aggressively towards me it's going to get shot.
-
Most areas do have such laws, and Stevens Co. has a "don't ask, don't tell", attitude, which is just fine.
I cannot imagine any area, if you legitimately say a dog has come at you, and kill it, you are very safe from prosecution. My wife works out a lot, and takes our grown husky with her. She has been attacked by a couple of dogs, and those same dogs are now "listed" as dangerous, and must be chained or fenced up in the owners yard, or be destroyed.
-
makes me wonder why in gods creation you can shoot a dog that acts aggresively or chasing wild animals or domestic animals for that matter, and i know i am gonna catch hell for this but here goes anyways... but it will be a federal crime if we whack a wolf that is aggresive or doing its thing like wiping out tons of wildlife that we pay through the nose to hunt :twocents:
-
Because there is no money to be made viewing stray dogs in the wild

Why would you catch hell "here"? This is the Choir man!!! :yike:

Here are a couple "wild" dogs I caught on one of my trail cams. Look like deer killers to me. This picture came from a very rural area.Only a farm here and there. After this pic I didn't get a deer photo for a week!

X2! That dog will be taking a nice dirt nap.

True they have a don't ask don't tell attitude but unfortunetly a good deal of the people hold that true to deer as well. I am always amazed to see the amount of poaching that goes on in and around Colville, almost as bad as the Republic and Curlew area.
-
Talk to the Game Wardens, the areas around Springdale are #1 in the State for Poaching, and with the economy like it is, it isn't going to get any better......That/Those area(s) border the res, and I think quite a few of us on here understand how Native American's feel about taking deer on any lands.

The Killer Dogs that made the news are dead, but the other uncountable killer dogs of Stevens county are alive and doing well. I have seen fawns being chased by domestic dogs nearly as many times as I've seen them being chased by coyotes.....to take action on this type of a matter is a real crap shoot because you never know from day to day how law enforcement will react to such things......the "dont ask dont tell" TODAY, tomorrow may be different. People get mighty fired up when their dogs get shot......
-
Welcome aboard Buckfvr, and yep, I fully agree.
Doesn't matter what happens, when some dog owner finds his dog has been shot, and he knows who did the shooting, he will most likely call the Sheriff.
When I was younger, I killed any dog I came into contact with, while in the woods, guess I've grown soft and let the last couple go.....
Thinking of going back to old habits though.....although the first question I ask when hunting private property---"do you have any dogs...", if they say "No", I ask what they would like me to do if I encounter any.
The usual response from farmers is "kill them", then I'm good to go.
-
It is more common for me to see deer chasing coyotes than coyotes chasing deer. Not so with dogs. BIG problem and the dogs are bad too. It is rare for the owners to understand or care. Animal control tends to be as big a problem as the owners. Law enforcement understands but has other priorities. Practice with the shotgun for close work and keep that rifle in top form for the rest.

the property i hunt north of spokane is a family compound of 160 acres. father and mother have their house on it, their daughter and her family and their son and his family. they all have dogs. the dogs of the father and daughter never stray much from the porch or lawn. the sons dogs? i've watched them chase multiple deer almost every time hunt the property. i've had to adjust my strategy and avoid 'his' side of the property. the daughter's husband discreetly asked me to dispatch the dog, but man, what a nightmare that could become! there have been several times i could have taken them, and probably rightly so, but when archery hunting, if the dog showed up back on it's porch with a broadhead hole in it... man, :bdid:
i've asked that they keep their dogs inside when i hunt, but as of yet there has been no effort to do that. it's a tough situation, for sure! i would really like to hunt the deer where they're crossing into the property near the sons house, but the dogs always have the deer running and it's not my property, so there's not much influence i have on what they do with their dogs.
-
I think if they don't have a collar then they are likely a ferral dog.. I'm very torn as a dog owner, but i've got too much time and $$$ invested to let my dog go running around. I keep him in sight or fenced up for his protection as much as mine. :twocents:
-
I can't image if it were only "3" dogs killing 100 livestocks. I see we have 92 dogs as five packs being loose in wood killing all deer, Elk, etc. "If it only 3 dogs per packs" It would be 3,066 mixed deer, Elk, and moose being killed from march till now. :yike: Not good news
Mulehunter.

wow, i love all the great comments. back home in vermont it is leagal to dispatch of dogs chasing deer, no questions asked. there is also not the wild dog problem we are currently facing in washington. i was camping with the family and we had a real agressive dog come into camp, before i could even chamber a round my american bulldog tookcare of him, i love having a good protection dog! i grew up with hounds that loved to run and we just bought good chains. it all boiles down to dog owners taking responsibility. we should be able to get the "man" in olyimpia on board with some more defined laws regaurding "dog control" because if wild dogs start interbreeding with their beloved wolves it could introduce alot of disease and stress to the pack! i am willing to get on board with a removal plan
-
Ya know what!?! Maybe your onto something there.....if dogs breed with wolves, then they are all JUST DOGS, and we can legally kill dogs that "chase" deer in this state....
Good Plan.
