I was up there two weeks ago.  Water was 44 degrees.  There are cutthroat in both lakes but it is still kind of early.  I didn't catch anything that trip.  Greenwater Lakes are a good early season hike for a quick fix while waiting for the high lakes to thaw.

:yeah: and if you go while it is still cold up there you wont find as many people with coolers full of beer.  I prefer the second lake myself.

We used to camp at teh lakes with the boy scouts twice a year. We have had several meals provided by those lakes. Nothing with any real size, but good tasting  ;)

I used to take my dalmatian on this hike all the time, all the way up to Echo and Lost lake too. makes for about 5-6hrs of hiking if i recall. I tried fishing a few times but no luck.

Lake eleanor on the other side of 410, only about 1mile hike into the mt rainier park however, produces big trout.

Greenwater lakes used to have good fishing about fifteen years ago . My brother caught about a five pound trout out of the second one on a fly. I thought about taking my boys up there this month for a overnight camping/fishing trip. They are 9 and 11 years old. If the fishing is not good I may look for another hike in lake to try. Any one have any suggestions for a hike in, overnight fishing trip that would not be too hard for the kids to get to?

yes exactly what I said in the post above, lake eleanor. short hike good for kids, camping ok (get mt rainier park pass) and fishing was good as of 2 years ago.

its only a few more miles on the other side of the hwy, great little lake and I always see deer and elk there. plus if you get adventurous theirs a trail that goes another few miles up to I think Grand Park inside mt rainier park. lots of things to be enjoyed in that area.
