Title: Alta late Muzzy Selected
Post by: jstone on June 14, 2011, 04:56:47 PM
OK My buddy and his dad got selected for the late Alta Muzzy tag. I am going to be there guide. Any info on a place to stay would be appreciated. also a place to start the scouting process. His father cannot walk to well and wont be many more years for him to hunt. is there gated roads or the ability to get him one close to a road. I will be scouting it for them. So the any buck tag is a good deal for him. Thanks for any info. Jeff

Places to stay. Last time i hunted twisp area stayed by the river with my trailer. Is there a cheep hotel around that unit? Or they do have a wall tent? Dont know if they will have the time to set it up though.

I had the tag last year.  If you want some info, send me a PM.   Wouldn't call it a great hunt, but I still had an opportunity at a 30-31", 180 type buck.

Sportmans Motel in Twisp not bad place to stay.
Cheap clean warm and have small kitchens to cook and fridges

Would book res now as very popular during hunting

Yes.  A lot of private down low.  Good access into the plentiful public land though.

Are you talking the any whitetail permit(buck deer hunt nov 1-20th) or the any buck nov 25-30 permit muzzy permit? If you have the later one and not much snow the mulies will still be above the Methow valley.

If you plan on camping Foggy Dew is a good campground. I have already done some scouting this spring but the dandy bucks come out of the hills with the snow.

I had that tag 2 years ago and hunted the crap out of it.  Passed up a 5x5 the 1st day that was wide but no mass and the forks where tiny.  I hunted really high and didn't have much luck,  I was in 16-20 inches of snow.  It was a fun hunt but I only saw a couple of nice ones.  My expectations were way to high.  There were a ton of road hunters but I didn't see anyone in the woods when we were stomping around.  If I remember right the camp grounds up high were closed at that time of year.  Or maybe just no one in them. :dunno:  There is plenty of land and areas to hunt.  I hunted Gold Creek, Libby Creek, and spent 2 days hiking around Black Canyon.  Black Canyon is were I saw the biggest buck but the fog was so bad I couldn't see well enough to shoot. :bash: :bash:  The area at the top of the black canyon road seemed like classic sage brush and Mule Deer Country. The fog was bad that year.  There seemed to be much more deer down low on the private land.  I hunt the regular season in unit 145 and it is all private, so I really wanted to hunt something different.

I'd hunt low in the sagebrush/bitterbrush that time of year.

Yeah lesson learned.   :chuckle:  I hunt a lot of late season whitetail in the deep snow.  Differnet tactics for different critters I guess.
