:tup:Congrats
-
Same here! See ya there
-
Make that 3!
-
Did all of you draw archery permits?
-
Mine is sept 6-18th
-
Let me know if any of you need any help. I spent a lot of time in there last year and seen a ton of elk! We had a good time hunting and I am more than willing to help you guys out.
-
I drew it with two of my buddies! Im still in shock and could hardly sleep last night! Unbelievable!
-
I drew modern in that unit. I grew up hunting there, and know it pretty well. I will however take any info I can get, that might help me out.
-
Cem- dont send everyone in the direction going to be in ;)
-
well if u guys need somebody to call a bull in i will.. ive called in 2 bulls for my dad already and many more in eastern washington here is a pic of one...
-
nice someone from buckley lol...
-
Should be a fun hunt. Hope the bulls will be screaming!
-
I'm curious how you guys feel about the white river archery being a quality hunt and not in the bull hunt section? It seems to me that if the muzzy and rifle are a Bull hunt, then shouldn't the archery be the same? I've called Dave Ware about this but I'm curious what you guys think. Remember the Indians do what they want in this unit, so should it be a permit at all?
-
I also have this tag for archery. I have had this conversation with friends in regards to the unit not being a bull tag like rifle and muzz. Not sure the reason other then access to high country in Sept. In regards to the mucks hunting the area they take a lot of elk each year and i do not agree with this but what are you going to do. The plus of them is they are not willing to walk anywhere. Fun area hunted it for many years when I was younger and rifled hunted. Then it went to spike only and i left and began archery hunting.
-
My wife had the muzzy tag the first year it came out and getting in the high country that year was no problem. I would rather they just open it back up to a over the counter tag since the 11 tribes that hunt it do what they want so the whole idea of permit only isn't going to work. Meaning they made it permit only to improve the elk numbers, not happening with the tribes doing what they want.
-
Leave it how it is. Its not going to help to open it up to the publc that will allow for more elk to get killed. I believe its considered quality since its in the rut? IF you dont classify it as a quality hunt please dont put in for the permit! Ok wait a minute I forget there are no elk in the unit and the indians have killed them all not worth applying for a permit.
-
I love how people always put what other people say in there own words on these post's. I have hunted the white river my whole life, I know what kind of unit it is. I never said it wasn't a good unit, I was simply stating two points. One, the indians have there way in there much more than when the unit was open to all of us. I don't think the population of elk is getting to the numbers that the game dept. wants and I don't think it ever will with no corroperation from the 11 tribes that slaughter up there. It was a good hunt when it was over the counter, hell I was about 40% in 20 years. My second point was, if the muzzy is in the bull category, which the elk were going out of their mind at the time, then why not put the archery in the bull as well. I don't think your odds of drawing will go down, I think you'll get the same numbers of people applying no matter what category it's in. IMO
-
I can't believe it's a draw unit. There is hardly any elk left in there. I know I will be wasting time on my hunt but I might get lucky enough to find one of the last bulls left.
-
Tikka I'm hoping to find a heavy 3 or 4 point in the unit in the lower lands. They moved the line so you can hunt just outside buckley. Hoping for a okay hunt I would not apply for this hunt with many points being there is so many good hunts in other areas
-
Agreed you and I are gonna be fighting over the last couple little bulls.
-

There is a ton of elk in the White River unit still. Deer on the other hand is a different story, but you have to be willing to put in some work and hunt hard. Just heed to my advice and I am sure you will connect on one, that is if you do your part!

I think it depends on your experience of "a ton of elk". The White River area use to be one of the top producing elk units on the westside of the state, obviously it is now permit only because of the huge decrease in numbers. Are there elk? Yes, in fact I usually see elk everytime I am in the area however it is nowhere near what it was like 20+ years ago.
-
That is true and I remember hunting in there with my Dad and uncles when I was about 10 and everybody got an elk. I do know that everday during the season last year we seen at least 30 elk. On a couple of occasions we seen 150+ elk in a day, but its definetly not a give me hunt.
Thanks again for all the advice you gave me last year BigTex!
-
I can say almost all units I've hunted aren't what they used to be. Gonna be fun I can't wait!
-
I talked to a wildlife biologists the other day and was told the elk are doing well in the that unit. Last three times I was in there I saw herds of twenty each time. You got to know where to look.
-
We can shoot cows with our permits right? Hope so, cuase its grouse season that time and I got a honey hole! Taggin out early and gonna kill me some grouse!

Thanks bigtex, and your background gives a lot of credibility to your comment. Some guys take me the wrong way, I do love the unit myself but think it should go back to over the counter if there is no control of the native hunts. I'm curious what you think about that?
-

No cow hunts in the white river, unless I'm missing something. I just checked the rifle, muzzy and archery are all bull hunts.
-
ahhhhh crap! Guess I'll be battling Kibber and Tikka for one of those rags! Watch out you two cause I gotta mean Hoochie Mama!
-
Ok apparently I'm not that funny! I was kidding!
-
I thought it was funny I might have to bust out tge cow girl then lol
-
good luck. I live in Buckley and may be able to offer a little help
-
Add one more to that list!! I also drew for archery. Can't Wait! I'm certainly open to any helpful info on the area.
Any of you guys Skookum archery members? Just curious. I spend a lot of time there.
Thanks
EFB
-
Have you ever hunted the area?
-
Well I think we have 5 or 6 of the 13 tag holders on hunt WA :IBCOOL:
-
Congrats! Not a member but shoot the course avery once in a while. Actually bought my first bow from Doug there at Great Northwest. Yea I think we got about half the tags accounted for on here now!
-
Just found out the other day I drew my first bull tag archery for white river. But dont know where to go talked to several guys and they said to kill a nice bull to go up in the high country and not down low where the indians have been. Any thoughts or pictures of bulls killed in this unit?
-
Congrats Bowtech! I think that puts about half the permits on huntwa now!
-
Well Bowtech lace up your boots tight and start scouting the unit is the best advice. Lots of steep country so get in shape ;) Not many bulls left in the unit cause the indians have slaughtered them all ;)
-
Any of you guys drop the coin on a Hancock permit?
Not sure where we will be hunting yet but look for the arctic fox trailer and two red trucks...that's us. Feel free to stop by and say Hi.
-
Not my group.
-
15 days my friends! Hows everyones scouting going? I know Tikka's waiting till the 5th to start his :chuckle: Seen one bull so far that I'd call a Ripper!
-
That's pretty cool you guys drew as a group. Should be great. I'd love to hold out for a trophy but the plan is to try and tag out on the first nice bull and then call for my buddy in Stampede.
-
Nothing wrong with that. Where you settin up camp?

i dont know about that, i know a place in there where the elk are all over you cant walk 5 feet without seeing sign and the trails into it are used so much they look like dirtbike trails but believe me there not, anyways this is down low where everyone drives by.
-
Haha Matt I will be up on the 1st!

-
yeah I have put in for that tag a couple times ...... but gave up on it ....
-

Not sure yet. Just picked up a new (used) trailer and am not sure how it will do for ground clearance. Plan on remounting axles, just haven't had time.
How about you?
-
i drew modern!! :IBCOOL:
-
iv been scouting out the white river unit about 3-5 days a week up outside enumclaw...more then a FEW bulls in there and more then a few elk... iv seen plenty of good bulls in there. thats if you have the access to the land. youll be surprised.. if the indians were in there as thick as you guys think...dont ya think they would be killing them off as they see them, they dont follow any guide lines, last year they proved that fact.

i will bet u money u hunt that unit hard enough and u will come out with a nice bull and i live in the white river unit you eather hunt high if theres no snow and i mean really hight border line park or if theres snow hunt right down close to town close to the farmers feilds in enumclaw and buckley
-
The indians or at least the Mucks don't start hunting until sometime in Sept. They used to hunt in August but I believe their own tribal regs changed that a couple of years ago. They will be there then ALL the time.....may be ok for the arrow boys but it will make it tough for the others with modern and muzzle tags. Also, those fields down near Enumclaw are not in the White River unit and they are for the most part private property....................Les
-
The Indians mean nothing when you hunt off the beaten path ;)

Hwy. 410 is the new boundary for this year.

white river is full of good elk, and iv seen them in weird spots up there...but those feilds where the mt peak heard is in enumclaw is mashell not WR, those are all private and no fire arms zone, but ill be having fun in my tree stand in them this year for sure tho! ;) just rubbin it in a little sorry hahaha.
best of luck all you WR tag holders!

Break a leg... ;)

You might want to look at your regs a little closer.....those fields in the Mt. Peak area are not the Mashel.....that is part of the Puyallup unit just for the record......Les
-
Who cares im hunting in the White River unit :chuckle:
-
Think I might join you Tikka :IBCOOL:

Hey, Les, they changed that to the White River Unit this year.
-
Oh yea.....I just looked at the regs and see that now. I guess that will be the WDFW defense to keep all of those guys from hunting the fields because they won't have the special permit....good strategy on their part. Thanks for the update. Boy, you have to go over the regs with a fine tooth comb any more every year..................Les
-
After the archery guys killed all the branched bulls in that herd last year, I'm not surprised at the change. That was pitiful watching those guys trying to stalk those elk in the fields, ony to push them to the guys hiding in the tree line. That's not hunting.
-
It was getting pretty ugly out there....made lots of ammo for the anti-hunters to state their case. It wasn't really hunting and there were just a few that had access on the private property that had all the advantage. One little change in the regs probably fixed the situation hopefully...............Les

Yeah your kinda right .... this has happened in my area too ... but the dept made the seasons so just can not blame it on the hunters UNLESS THEY BROKE THE LAW .......
-
I'm reading my 2011 regs for 653 (White River) and 652 (Puyallup):
".....NE on SR 410 to the White River; SE along the White River to the power transmission lines on the north side of the White River near Mud Mountain Dam Rd; NE on the power transmissionn lines to SR 410; E on SR 410......" etc.
Basically, the 653/652 boundary is described as going upriver from the White River bridge (just east of Buckley) over 410 to the power lines, then NE along the lines to meet 410 (close to the rock quarry). Go-Hunt maps duplicate the information.
I'm not the best with maps and directions (although I've never been truly lost), but from this description it appears the Mt. Peak elk are in the Puyallup GMU. King County has a firearm restriction zone and the elk there mostly stay on private farm land. If you get permission to hunt it would be a slam dunk.
I really enjoy watching those elk and would hate to see a slaughter out there. There's plenty of elk close to that area in the Puyallup GMU (almost hit one crossing the road yesterday).
-
how come its special permit only?? why cant general season hunt their?
-

Huge decrease in elk population over the past 20 years. Very publicized and a lot of info on it.
-
Don't bother hunting mt peak area I've watched so many road hunters driving by my house here today... disgusts me. At the same time it is funny cause most of these guys have no idea how little of property they would be able to hunt... gotta know people to this herd. But good luck.
-
Any tag holders get into any bulls?? Have the elk been talking up that way at all yet?
-

how little of property these guys can hunt is practically NONE... its all private, and the mt peak elk areas is not white river... people can think it is white river tho for sure if they want. and all the road poachers out there driving around the enumclaw fields.... there all private property, be real men and go hunting in the DAMN WOODS and out of your truck and not in a residential area ;) were getting tired of you guys driving around in your camo looking to poke an elk off the road.... its getting old for people that live out there.
-
this tag is made for people with boots. hike and you will find elk . no pass needed. i was on this hunt last year put in time and stay away from the roads. :twocents: :twocents: in 2010 the elk did not find the cows until sept 19th. atleast around christal mtn good luck.
-
I've been up Crustal the last couple days. Seen a herd with small raggie and a couple spikes. It's been pretty quite on that side of the mountain.
-
fire hazard... pretty much all of the WR is closed to everything. all the hancock gates have signs everywhere. :ACRY:
-

There is plenty of public land in the unit. Of all the bulls we seen last year, the majority were on public land. Most of the bigger bulls were up around Crystal. Like others have said, if you are willing to hike and get away from the roads then you should have a pretty good shot at a decent bull. :twocents:
-
thats why i said most, i know there is public land. Heck you could pay the 20 dollars for a gondola ride up, who needs to hike :chuckle:. No but i know a ton of guys who walk in from 410 off of hancock and other access gates, and every single spot has red signs saying no access period. So just thought i would state it for those guys who use them so they save a couple of bucks in gas money driving up there.
-
They must have just put them up cause they weren't up Tuesday.
-
There is one big bull up on crystal right now. A raggy and ok 5x5
-
spent friday and saturday up off of fr. 75.. heard no buglin.. seen know elk.. anybody else do any damage??

no there isn't and there is no bears either
-
How did the white river archery tag holders do this year? I remember there were a few people on here that had the archery tag. How was the hunt?
-
I only know of one killed.
-
:dunno:
-
We killed one in our group of 3. A pretty nice 6x6 that rough scores at about 280. The weather really put a damper on things but still had some pretty good hunting and were in elk just about everyday. Elk definitley weren't real aggressive for the most part. Had a few get fired up and come in and missed a ripper bull at 12 feet. How you might ask, very carefully!
-
Right on. The hot weather wasn't the greatest for hunting, but sounds like you guys made the most of it. I have a rifle tag and was just curious how the archers did. Any pics of that 6x you guys got?
-
NICE BULL !!!!!!!!!!! love the width on the thirds! :yeah:
-
Nice bull.
-
Heck yeah, nice bull!
-
Wow his thirds are pretty neat
-
Nice bull. How was the pack in that heat? I also drew the modern tag, new area for me. my 30 years of chasing have been in the dickey and clealwater on the peninsula. Don't plan on hunting the hancock property. Love hunting behind gates on the mountain bike. Only been over once so far but will have four days before it starts then the hole season if necessary. Only found one gated area so far and some gates that weren't closed all on the NFS. Do they close gates for winter in there? If note I will start hitting the trails
-
Did i miss something. One page asks for pics the next people saing nice bull.. I don't see anything

Here it is.
-
He looks lie a nice bull. Congrats to you.
-
So of all the guys on here that drew the white river archery tag only one of you killed?
-
Only one of us that I know of. I didn't kill
-
The rut was late, so Im sure that the smoke polers had a good season. The rifle boys should do ok as well.
-
Interesting. They were screaming their heads off in early september in the Issaquah. Muzzy season was pretty quiet.
-
Yep, only one tag got filled from the 4 that I knew.
