-
Great tag, congrats
-
Congrats Ric, thats awesome!! You should have a good hunt!
-
Congrats!! Let me know if you need a place to pitch a tent close to the south end. I'm in the Yale unit.
-
I drew also. Archery for me. Which did you draw?
-
I applied for this tag and got sh$t !! :o
-
got a bull tag for muzzy !!!!! :IBCOOL:
-
I got the muzzy antlerless tag last year and got my elk, my son got it this year and he is pretty excited. I saw some pretty respectable bulls while hunting last year, nothing huge but a nice five and a decent six. Good Luck and have fun!
-
Drew the quality bull tag
-
Congrats to you guys! I am in on this one as well. TAQBT-Toutle Archery Quality Bull Tag! Feels good!
-
mine is modern rifle. miss bowhunting very much. get mygraines. had the west klickitat cow tag. hunted hard. snowed but needed alot. lots of predator's there. good luck every one. Rick ;)
-
My party of four drew the rifle tag.
-
WOW!!! Go buy a lotery ticket you group has the luck... Congrats on a great tag.
-
Congrats to all that drew the tag. It's a really easy hunt if your not looking for something big. I drew a rifle tag in 04 and ate the tag. Couldn't get a shot at anthing that I thought was big enough. Only saw one bull that I wanted to shoot actually. My old man drew that year too. He shot a 4x4 opening day.
-
Drew that muzzy bull tag last year. The problem was them opening the gates the day of the opener and tons of people, that and the unusually hot weather last year. There were bulls to be had though. I didn't have a lot of time to hunt because of work/zero time to scout and settled on a rag horn, but talked to severall guys that ate their tags hoping for a nice bull or setteled on spikes to fill the freezer. Some guys we talked to didn't even see a bull. Be ready for spooky elk because of the sudden onslaught of people and the best areas being pushed by most of the tag drawers hunting that state land north of the south fork of the toutle up to the mud flows.
Good luck man, my partner and I had a great hunt after a wall hanger late in the season, but the ground was like walking on corn flakes on a dead calm hot day, we were wearing our t'shirts only all season. The elk seemed to calm down towards the end and started buggeling again. My rag horn came right to me with only 2 blows off the bugle, had a dozen cows with him and looked real nervous like a bigger bull was coming to woop him. The cows acted like they wanted a bigger bull. 7 days goes by fast and weather and traffic were big obstacles. Don't count on the gates staying closed. Post your Pics on here or people get angry. Have fun
-
I got the muzzy cow tag. I am really looking forward to it.
-
I drew the Toutle archery elk quality bull tag and plan to hunt near the kid valley side.
Unless I get some info to hunt a different part, any inputs or info /
I will try and see if I can also find a spot for my trailer to camp if Kid valley campground is already full
-
The old man drew a cow tag in there this year. He had a bull tag in there 4 or 5 years ago and ended up taking a little bugger of a 3 point after the 5th day. But hey, it was 75 yards uphill of the road and some nice passing hunters helped us load him whole.
-
My nephew drew the muzzeloader bull tag. I haven't stepped foot in the unit, and I don't think he has either. Had some buddies draw rifle tags before, and all got elk, but just raghorns. Should be a fun hunt at least, hunting bulls in the rut.
-
You can't spit in that unit without hitting a 6X. Great draw and good luck!
-
I archery hunt every year near the Toutle unit but finally drew the rifle Toutle tag. I want to see some pictures or hear some stories about past years with this tag....Any recommendations?
-
Every time I've gone deer hunting up there, I see a parade of nice bulls. I'd go in from the Cougar side by USFR 81 (I think) It's the forest road that goes north fairly near where 503 ends. There's a dirt rd just on the left as you start up 81 and lots of access up in there.
-
I drew margaret cow and toutle bull. Do I have to call them and tell them which I want? Or do they send both and I can hunt both until I tag out?

You don't need to do anything. You got both permits, and you can use both of them.
-
But only fill one! I dont think the cow tag is a second elk tag.
-
HntnFsh- you are right. I have seen a lot of post on here of people thinking that can shoot both the bull and the cow. when really they are getting screwed out of either one of there points. I think some people are going to be getting in trouble for shooting both.
-
That's right. These are permits we're talking about, not tags. A person can only have one elk tag, except for Master Hunters- they have some 2nd elk tag permits available but not for Toutle or Margaret.
-
I know I got screwed out of my cow points.

How could people be dumb enough to think that they can kill two animals with only one tag? You don't tie your permit on the animal, you need to tie the tag on. I really don't think people are that stupid.
-
I think I may need to do some scouting down near Cougar, I appreciate the PMs I have received with good info for access.
Now I hope they don't close the woods down come Sept when summer gets here.

Because they are people.Ive done and seen enough stupid stuff to know it happens.

i drew the toutle archery bull tag last year, its not a gimme,,,, you will be in elk every day but its still hunting.
i covered most of the unit (north and south) between early and late hunts.
if anyone needs some tips, you can pm me.
great tag and lots of action.
really you can see elk almost everywhere, i had better luck when i got out of the state land and walked in behind the gates, the elk were not as shy in those places...
-
I just pulled last years Toutle stats:
Archery 37.7% success rate 9 were five pt or better, 4 were four point, and seven spikes.
Muzzleloader 50% success rate 9 were five pt or better, 3 were four point, and one spike
Rifle 55.6 successs rate 11 were five pt or better, 20 were four point, 3 were three pt, 1 two pt, and 25 spikes.
Interesting :dunno:

You know, I've spent a ton of time in that unit and that's about the last comment I would ever make about that unit. There are a lot of bulls in the unit but 80% of them are 5pt or smaller. :dunno: I hunted it 3 years ago when my cousin drew a archery bull tag and saw one 6pt, he was a 290"-300" bull, my cousin shot and hit a tree. Every other bull we called in was a 4pt or 5pt. Tons of raghorns. I'm not saying there isn't any 6pt bulls in the unit, but they are few and far between, and even fewer are mature 6pt's. Still a good hunt if you're not looking for a trophy, just a good hunt. I've actually seen and killed bigger bulls in the coweeman. They will come running in to calls though. I have had no problems bugling bulls in all day long in the toutle. Like someone said earlier, there are a ton of hunters in certain areas of that unit. Good luck to all that drew!
-
i would be just Happy with a bull. dont care about a trophy. had stints in my hear around three years ago and diabetes now. this is the best i have felt in awhile. bought a sweet 45 today going to get out hiking a bunch to get in shape. going to get the mt bike turned up. i need this. use to kill alot of critter's hit a road block in life will be 53 in oct. looking forward to this hunt. Rick
the cool thing is i'm going to make my self a couple elk call's. not sure if i'll do antler or exotic wood. yes i'm pumped.. ;)
-
right on Bearmanric, I'm 52 and will be down there for archery elk, love to buy a cow call if you make an extra one that your not needing
-
Wife drew a rifle cow tag this year. Should be elk in the freezer.
-
I make them and predator calls. Jason Phelps also makes a great elk call. Mine are louder. Working on differen ones. Thanks I miss working bull's but can't shoot a now migraines miss it very much Rick
-
Thanks Rick. Rick's calls will send elk to their dirt nap just as good as mine (our calls just sound different). Can't go wrong with an RR call. I wish you guys with Toutle Tags the best of luck and kill a good one.
-
Thanks guys
same to you all

I drew that tag last year. I ate mine for archery. Was my choice. Like people said there are a ton of 5's in there I called in quite a few. I held out for a 6 pointer I had a nice one that would have went around 300. And never got it done. Wish you all the best in there....

How many times do you think you could have closed the deal on smaller elk?
-

Hope that = meat in the freezer.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I finally drew the quality elk toutle tag, but last year's hunting revealed a spot where a huuuuge 6x6 was located. I've been archery hunting hard for elk for nearly 5 years (self taught) to no avail, and last year put me within 85 yards of that 6x6. I have no clue as to what the toutle unit holds, or where and how to hunt it. So do I go to where I know for sure holds elk (cuz I've seen them with my own 2 eyes), or do I go to the toutle unit blind? I've google earthed the toutle unit and notice a LOT of roads. I'm the kind of guy that will hike 5 miles or more to get in away from the crowds. From the posts here, the DNR land north of the south fork of the toutle river is where a lot of elk and a lot of hunters are. With the verbal lashings that I've gotten from my family while I come home year after year empty handed, I want to fill the freezer this year. As long as it's legal, I'll be happy. Can anybody tell me where the majority of the folks go in the toutle unit, so I can avoid the crowds and increase my chances of bringing something home? Message me if you don't want the info given to the masses.
-
sorry but this year they uped the tag numbers, it all will be crouded. :twocents: put in your time and don't give up sometimes the last day can be the best . most people give up half way thru the season. j

Yeah, that place is pretty terrible. I would never hunt there if I was you. Tell all your friends it's not worth the drive. The wife got drawn for Toutle Archery Bull. Think I'll take her in there just to piss her off. I've also got some fantastic Mississippi swamp land I'd be happy to sell you if your interrested :chuckle:.

Just watched "Angry Spike Productions" Season 2006, they have 2 Toutle permits and take fairly representative (for Toutle) Bulls.

Go to Elknut.com, learn how to really speak the language and you should have a great action packed hunt. There will be no one in the unit compared to other units that are over the counter so the elk are not pressured and receptive to calling (good calling).
I keep trying to pull this tag with my son but haven't been lucky yet :( Some day!
Good luck and remember to come back here with your story and pick...even it you do not harvest an elk. It's how we keep sane the rest of the year ;)
