That is the 2nd most commonly asked question on this site. #1 is "What does YAR stand for?"
#3 is "I just drew __________ Tag. Can someone tell me where that is?" :chuckle: :chuckle:

Hope you realize how lucky you are. Definitely the "chosen one." Good luck.
-
I agree and I do realize how lucky I am. I have to keep looking to make sure it still says selected. I still just shake my head and say "unbelievable"

Very true :chuckle:

I have got a great where is it question. Based on draw odds I should have surely drawn a sheep tag if not also a moose and/or goat tag. Well, can someone tell me where this is?

wow nice tag, that was my first choice. The guy who had it last year killed a damn monster! I believe it is a new state record or second, I saw it at the sportsman show this year. Due it justice, good job.

There used to be a guy on this site who was a hardcore sheep photographer. (Nice guy, but most people didn't agree with his politics) I saw him say a few times that the next state record would come out of Asotin...
-
Didn't the new state record come out of Asotin last year??
-
It wasn't me and it isn't Washington, but my Dad drew an any Moose tag for his right at his home in Montana.
-
GOOD FOR HIM! Thats awesome.

Doug, Sent ya a PM, yeah he is pretty excited and I am super excited for him.

the new record book sheep was taken in swakane not asotin, but there are some giants in there for sure

My son drew an Idaho moose tag for unit 3002 in the panhandle for oct. 1st to the 14th and it showed up on his birthday.

-
A good buddy of mine drew a 49 degrees, any moose tag with 10 points. He has no idea where to hunt, but at least we have one contact that lives in the unit. Lots of scouting is in order. Should be a neat hunt to be a part of.
-
Not tot hijack this thread, but WTF is a YAR?
That Asotin sheep tag is a dandy. Better hit the stairmaster.

Didn't "draw" a tag, but going mtn. goat/moose hunting in B.C. this year...didn't want to have to wait till I was 143 years old to "draw" a tag in this state, so I'm just gonna go do it while my knees will let me.
-
My brother and I always put in for the OIL tags individually thinking that if one of us draws the other will be there to help. Well wouldn't you know it, we both drew a 49 degrees north moose tag. Oh well at least we will be hunting together.
-
Welcome to the site!
We expect lots of pics and a story ;)
-
what are the odds that two brothers would draw an oil tag for the same unit same year ? you guys work for WDFW ? :chuckle: good luck deep lake .

Have double digit in all three OIL tags 12-14 pts and feel the same way when will it happen? Thinking Canada would be a great option since I might be retired before I draw :chuckle:
-
I just looked at the proposed regulations and if you get drawn for an oil tag its now $330 dollars WTF. Am I reading this right? I will not think twice about applying or spendinding the money but its actually getting cheaper to hunt in some other states than it is in the one I live in.
-

:yike: Serious! WTF, what a bunch of crap if this is true. I know some guys on here will say they would gladly pay more for the tag but this is supposed to be a once in a lifetime tag, how about keeping it in reach for all. Greedy a holes, yes I will pay it but what a bunch of crap. When will it end, do they realize that they could raise the price to 1000 dollars and we would still pay! It shouldn't be about the money on these OIL tags, they are missing the point.
-
I saw it on the WDFW website so its not something I heard second hand I also seen that the quality tag permits are just above $13. If we could look at the new regulation pamphlet we would know for sure but every year those keep coming out later as well.
-

Really? Where is it cheaper to hunt an OIL species in another state? My credit card would strongly disagree with you.
-
"OIL" tags are called that because there are very few. In reality, a far better description for Washington OIL tags would be "NIL" tags: Never In a Lifetime. If you want to play the lottery game and hope to get drawn in Washington, you need to understand that odds are extremely low and that you are almost certain to never draw. Of course some do, and some lucky dogs win the lottery.
Increasing the price will improve odds because fewer people will apply. If you really want to hunt one of these species, you need to apply in a state or province with better odds, but the price will definitely be higher. For example you apply in Idaho where moose odds are very odd. If you get drawn you'll need to shell out about $2300.
-
The new prices went into effect several months ago, and we've known about it for almost a year now. So it's no surprise. I don't necessarily like it, but I'll gladly pay $330 for a moose tag. Not so sure about the sheep. I'll have to think about that one. In a way I'm glad for the increase in price because it should increase odds a little. I always thought $100 was a little too low, but to triple it from one year to the next does seem a bit excessive. But as others have said, it is still well below what it would cost to hunt in another state.
-
I completly understand that we pay a lot more in other states as a nonresident, I just think as residents shouldn't have to pay excessive tag fee's for animals that we only get to hunt once, (with exception of raffle tags). If people want to put large amounts of money into being able to hunt then the raffle tags are perfect for them. I just wonder at what cost will it eventually get to, and then will those species be only for the rich or well off. We all have the right to have a chance at those incredible animals, not just those with deep pockets. I can afford the 300 but what about the the few that can't, I just think everyone should have a chance of a lifetime hunt without the hardship that comes with increased tag fee's. :twocents:
-

Right on!!! Those are some very very long odds you and your brother hit. Odds like that have to have a hell of a lot of zeros behind it
-
Mt Spokane north any moose for me!!! FINALLY !!!
-
I put my grandson in for Idaho moose it;s been his dream hunt but he did;nt draw and yesterday when the 2100 dollar refund came we found out he drew 49 north for wa, now we have money for gas.
-
I have noticed on the other threads that a fair number of the OIL Tags went to people that also drew Quality Bull or Quality Buck Tags as well. I am thinking (based upon that) that more "Max Point Holders" drew stuff this year. Maybe raising the prices took a lot of the "lucky" drawers (1 and 2 pointers) out of the draws this year. :dunno:

49 degrees north (any)...any info would be greatly appreciated.....thanks in advance!

I drew the GMU 113 moose tag this year! Can't believe I did it with only 5 points. Any help would be welcomed. (Where to start, where to stay, how to judge a bull, what's a good bull in WA,... and the list goes on and on!) Thanks, Omar

That's great! After living in Alaska where the moose come easy. Every year I can't wait for the draw results to see if I get to jam one up in WA. Best of luck on your hunt. I'm green with envy!

I'm am a true believer in our point system what's the matter w it :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Problem is that there will always be more max point holders than there are tags. Even if you just gave all the tags out to the guys who have been applying since 1996, you would still take several years to "clean them all out" of the pool, then you'd have to start on all the 1997 guys. That's what happens in a state where there are more hunters than game. It's an unsolvable problem...

Tag holder and helpers of the tag holder needing a place to stay for scouting or hunting purposes for the Naches Goat tag I have a cabin near Corral pass (close to last cabin). It's a rustic yet comfy cabin that's been drying out hunters for years. Don't know if this is applicable but thought I'd throw it out there. I'd love to tag along but not gonna require it :) PM me for details/pics and what you're thinking if interested??? Congrats on tag!

What an awesome ram! Great pics too!

Shooting sheep in the Swakane is like shooting fish in a barrel, finding the couple true big boys is a whole different story. Hope it came together for him, would be nice to see a 185 or bigger.

Nope but still a dang nice ram.

Just drawing that tag would be satisfaction enough, the Ram is just icing on the cake!

I disagree just drawing the tag isn't satisfaction enough only notching it is.

If your interested in just notching it, you can do that from the highway. 10 steps off the pavement any day of the year. ;)

Rams aren't the hardest, fastest, toughest, or wiliest animals out there and that's not what makes them special. Finding the biggest rams in Swakane isn't particularly "hard" either including the record ram. You are hoping for the 2nd biggest ram ever to be killed... Nobody has seen a ram in there that legitimately tops 180" since the record ram. The record ram was once in a lifetime and there isn't one that gets that big every year, decade, or century. It was a once in a lifetime deal and expecting anything close is not exactly rational. The ram taken this year was an amazing ram as this unit CAN grow some large rams. They have to live that long and have a good 3 first years of growth. When they die on the road before the fence was put in it cripples this small population. Aaron's ram, Harris' ram, and some people have created unrealistic expectations on these sheep. They might look similar to rocky sheep, but they are not. We are producing the biggest cali rams in the world but are we starting to take our huge cali rams for granted?
The ram taken was awesome! Great length and mass and truly one of the prettiest rams with a wide curl. The hunter spent a memorable 3 weeks scouting and hunting all the rams in the unit and taking a great ram.
-
Sounds like the hunter did all he could do and took a great ram, hopefully he signs up (if not already a member), tells the story, and shows some pics.

David is a member, goes by "whuppinstick". I doubt the story gets up here anytime soon, he has a couple more nice tags to fill and is hoping to get the story/pics in a magazine first.
Oh and..................this is the 2011 OIL tag thread, not the 2012. ;)

Oil tags a Oil tag.. ;) Allot of great sheep in the Swakane unit. It's going to be a long time before Aaron's sheep takes a place in the #2 spot.

As Rob said, I'm short on time as I'm heading to Idaho soon for goat and elk.
I am hoping to get the story/photos published so it'll be a few months before I post them up here, but I will post them.
I scouted for 18 days and shot the biggest ram I could find on the 19th day. I was debating holding off a little longer, but after checking with many sources we didn't have any confirmation on a larger ram and with all the forest fires in the area, there was a threat the Swakane unit would be closed to entry by the Forest Service. I made the call to take the largest ram I'd found and share the experience with the team who was able to come over for the weekend. It was a good choice and I got a beautiful ram. It was a great 19 days and a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Thanks to Rob, Shawn, and Shane for making the trip to the unit just to join in on a sheep hunt - two of those guys had never even met me before! Their help in poring over sheep photos, adding numbers, accompanying me on the hunt, and photographing the heck out of the sheep was all much appreciated.

Congrats Dave!!! I heard about it the day you scored great Ram and Smart Decsision... Give me a ring when you get back into town and well hookup and share stories. Good luck on the Goat hunt and the next few weeks with all them other tags you pulled as well  Talk to ya soon. James
