Drew this tag on my 2nd choice, sure hope it as good as I think it will be. Never hunted it before. time to get out and do some research.
-
Know that area pretty well. Nice draw....
-
any Info would be appreciated.
-
Squaw Rock Resort & RV Park is a good area to start off from. The forest service roads in that area are good places to look for elk. Especialy during bow season, im notsure about any other time of year.
-
I drew that one as well. Plan to take my girls on lots of weekend backpack "fishing" trips this summer to learn the area better! Good Luck with your tag!
-
William O. Douglas Wilderness is where you want to go. ;)
-
Depends on teh type of hunting you do :dunno:
Wilderness hunt, Day hike in and out. pack in for a few days. Drive to an area and hunt it then back to camp (like most poeple). Road hunt, etc.....
Lots of good area up there, but if I had that tag ( I drew Obserbatory) I would be in talks with Norsepeak and utilising his guide service. i know he has some dandy bulls scouted out and inparticular that I have extreme interest in, but I did not draw that tag ;) You should see the dandy bull he killed last year with that tag
-
Here is a bull my buddy took in that unit in 09.... we were 7.5 miles in....
-
Pick your poison, lots of options as has been noted, elk in every part of the unit, I'd pick a couple of areas and learn them, hard to go wrong with that tag.

nice Bull,

sounds like that will be a good hunt. Good luck in there.
-
I have started my research, now I gotta get my ass in shape.

I am a power lifter, and its not an endurance sport.
-
 I drew it too! Looks like I'm going solo. Still trying to decide to pack in up high or car camp it. I do know where I'll be spending many a weekend this summer though. And now I've got to decide whether I go with the longbow or wheels. It's all good though, I'm not whining!
-
william o doug is the place to be, nice nice nice bulls in thier, could have thrown rocks at some in years past. you gotta find em though.
-
That was only one I applied for, cause it's the only place I know well enough to walk up on a big bull.
-
My dad (I am in the photo) got on the board in 2008 with this one and we are hoping to do better this year. Yes, he has good luck drawing for the second time in 4 years. I will be doing the calling again and couldn't be happier. It will be a good way to spend the season.
-
I drew that tag in 09 it was a good hunt. I ended up shoot a cow at 14 yards I couldn't pass it up. I can share a little info if anyone wants it just shoot me a pm
-
Awesome tag! We drew last year and had a blast but didn't come home with anything. Saw a lot of elk though.
-
Worked many, many bulls in that unit last season. Great hunt. This is my GP archery bull from last season.

NICE BULL... I LIKE IT...

I am looking for a good topo map for this area, I have the Forest Service map but its not very good at showing how the ground is. any suggestions.

Wholesale Sports has Kiosk with a National Geographic mapping program and you can print out custom maps of your liking.
You can buy the program (I did) and print you won out at home. It caost $99 to buy the program and believe each map to print is about $7 or so at WS
-
Do you have the National Forest map that covers the entire National Forest, or the one that only covers the Ranger District? The Ranger District maps are pretty good. I find them more useful than just about anything else.
-
You have a great tag. I drew that tag for rifle last year. I have been hunting Goose Prairie for 15 straight years now! Ill be over there this weekend scouting. Thats your best bet is to get in the woods and get familier with the area. Its a big, steep nasty bit of land but some huge bulls come from there!!!

Did you get a nice bull? If so any pics?
-
thanks for the info, keep er coming. yes pics of BIG BULLS are good.
-
We drew that tag last year (archery) and it was an eye opener. We were in bulls but just counldn't pull the trigger. It is some ROUGH country, get in shape. We found most of the bulls in the bottom of the canyons. If you can, get into Indian Creek meadows. There will be an outfitter or two in there but its a big area. Most of the wilderness area roadless so plan on hiking if you go in there. Good Luck
-
My dad has the tag. We have a plan. Looking forward to September!
-
Yes I got the bull on the 2nd day of the hunt. 6x6 Goose Prairie 423yrds .300 Weatherby
-
Nice Bull!
-
Good bull! I was over fishing bumping last weekend and saw a few bulls. You should have no problem finding elk over there but defiantly get into good shape.
-
I have been lookin over some maps and it has some great potential.
-
yes
-
yes what? :dunno:
-
Just spent a week camping there. Lots of nice bulls and a few spikes. Talked to a local guy and between what he said and my observations, .....go find steep hillsides where the bed and set up. When I say steep I mean STEEP! They like looking down at you. That's what I saw. Ran into one young two point bull who kept buggling every morning and wandered in and around our camp all the time. Not afraid of humans...yet!
Good luck! Build up the legs or find the routes and set up on them.
-
Wow, it's almost like they're tame :dunno:

Just can't let it go can ya Jimmy. :bash: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Fantastic area....Hunted most of my life in that area. You do not need to hike in the wilderness to kill a monster bull, though it can increase your odds. Never drawn a big bull tag for the area, but before it went to spike / cow and now spike only I missed the biggest bull I have ever seen in Washington.
Good Luck
-
Just sayin' :)
-
Poor Jimmy.

Cant wait for him to eat tag soup :chuckle:
-
That's not nice. I hope Jimmy shoots a 350 inch monster. Well he should since its so easy.
-
I spent Friday night in bumping up on top. Good times. Didn't see any elk but they are trickling back in. However the game department doesn't think there are any cows in the unit. :bash:
-
It's a good thing I'm not lookin for a cow then. A few soft cow calls and a cow decoy and we should be surrounded by Big Bulls. It should be fun....
-
When I was up high I did run into some of this but it wasn't as bad as folks were making it out to be.
-
And my trusty foot bridge finally washed out... a simple ford farther up stream was plan b. This log used to go all the way across.
-
Some of the willows were behind and just budding out but in other parts the grass was growing really good. It was a beautiful day.
-
Tumac still had some snow patches on top.
-
nice pics, thanks for sharing.
-
Looking at those pictures I can almost hear the buzzing, and start slapping at the imaginary skeeters on the back of my neck :chuckle:

I think I've hunted those spots. Was it "sandy"?
-
Sandy? No... the ground has been absorbing all the run off and was nice and firm. I didn't make it down the "sandy" trail at all. The mosquitos weren't bad in the evening or morning or away from the lakes as the snow just came off. Give it two weeks and they will carry you away!
-
I was up there Saturday and was surprised at how little snow there was compared to rimrock. Didn't see a single mosquito either (can't say the same for rimrock :yike:). There wasn't a cloud in Washington either. I know because I could see all the way to Mt. Hood!
-
I Like the pics.
-
If you drive along the rivers now you will see elk all over the valleys. My wife wonders why the hell it is so hard . Come Sept opener in the Bumping you may catch them out the first few hours but after them seeing " activities " pick up they get smart real fast. I hike a mile and a half up the ridge & hike in the dark for an hour before light to my stand. Opening morning they show up about 7:30 & feeding along, next couple of mornings they are coming by at first light. After a couple of days they are up on the ridge in the dark & I am jumping them on the way. I have hunted up there for about 8 years and really like the area. Feels a little wild up where I hunt alone. Good luck with your bull tags ! Wish I had one . :bash: If you guys with tags run out of ideas mid season & get desperate , send me a Pm. I will be up hunting & can do some calling. Mike

Hitting the back-country this weekend! got 15 miles scheduled as a pre season shakedown. Wish they were bugling!

Herd rumors that the elk were getting vocal all ready
-
I have heard the same rumor
-
I garantee they are bugling. :chuckle:
-
Did anyone make it up there this week end? I was going to go but had to change plans again. going to try again next week end.
-
i went! Snow at 5300'! Massive misquotes and a few elk.
-
What sort of snow we talking about...like ground covered with snow...a few residual drifts. Main question is would it be difficult getting around? Having a snow drift to throw my elk quarters on to help keep them cool would not be a problem. 3 feet of snow that you would sink to your knees with every step might be a problem.
-
patches. Some big, some small. North slopes had a bunch! Made for some cool breezes after dark.
-
thanks for the Info guy's.
-
Was wandering the Hindoo's this weekend and the snow is basically gone. The highest I got was 7400ft and there isn't anything more than some strips of snow in the timber but nothing of any significance. Couldn't believe all the goats I DIDN'T see! I think bigfoot ate them all or the mosquito's carried them off :dunno:

I was up with my wife and kids in the Bumping area just driving around checking it out and seen lot of deer and early morning heard some vocals. We just went for a drive on Friday since I had the day off and to get out of the valley. Sounds like this area is going to be a orchestra come a few weeks so you should have some good stories bench beast.
It sounds like you're more than prepared for this so good luck!
-
Thanks, I sure hope to have so pic's too. I will be keeping you posted.
-
I have a Peaches Ridge tag this year but have hunted the Bumping before. I set up camp up Blankenship Meadows and hunted Tumac Mt., Twin Sisters Lakes, Pear and Apple Lakes, and all the ridges. Got into Elk every day!! Definitely bring a fishing pole, if you fill your tag early. I used the Indian Creek Trail (I think thats the name) near the very end of the Bumping Lake Road. I know it is closed now, but if you can get in there you should have a good time. You can access from Hwy 12 or even the Clover Springs area.
Chinook Pass Outfitters commonly has drop camps in the meadows.
-
Indian Creek trail comes off of HWY 12. I think its deep creek trail from the end of Bumping road.
-
thanks again, for the Info
-
It never fails, plan on going scouting. then I get to work instead of scouting. Looks like my scouting will be durring season.
-
Still 3 more weekends before the season starts. You have time. :)
-
Took my girls in there backpacking over the weekend. Went in on the trail west of the lake, then worked up the ridges to the lakes. No kidding, the skeeters are very bad. We would apply the deet every 30 minutes or so, and they would still find places to poke through. Finally bailed out of the higher country to make camp lower where the infestations were not as bad. Late snow melt up higher has made for ideal breeding grounds! No coincidence that we found the elk and sign more prevalent down there as well. I'm sure the elk will move up the valley's as the season/pressure progresses.
-
Packing in from a different direction this weekend. Still heading into the backcountry. I figure I can checkout the easy to get to areas during the season. 8)
-
from the sounds of IT you better be SMOKEY THE BEAR. :twocents: too keep the SKEEETTTERSS away. good thing you are bigger than me. it is just another september, remember that units and permits are all BS. THINK OF THIS HUNT LIKE IT IS IN YOUR BACK YARD AND YOU WILL BE FINE. :yike: :yike: j
-
just found out that work is going to let me take both weeks off!!! they were only going to let me take one week, but they took pitty on me. since I just started this job in July. I felt lucky getting one week. now I dont have to decide to hunt the first or second week.
-
Sounds great. Are you heading over Labor day weekend? It would be a good time to get some scouting in.
-
we are planning on getting there sunday and get camp set up. hope to find the BULLS monday.
-
Good luck on your hunt guys!!
-
The boots saw over 18 miles of "Gods Elk Country" this weekend. WOW!!!! I 've got to get up there for elk season. I don't know if I've got what it takes to get one off the mountain though. Solo hunting this year.
-
that could be a problem, getting in is one thing. packing a BIG BULL out is a problem I would like to have.
-
thanks for all the Info, we have a few spots picked out. 2 more weeks, cant wait.
-
Scouting this weekend in God's country. Hopefully the mosquitos don't carry me away. :o

lets hope not,
I was up there checking it out as well and the mosquitoes weren't that bad. I had a few bulls answering some cow calls and ran into a bunch of cows and a few little pockets of does , no bucks. Good luck bench and just like you said packing out a BIG BULL would be a good problem to have. When I was coming out I ran into this big field of huckleberries and I couldn't help myself and I just started picking and eating. I spent quite awhile getting my fill and didn't hear or see a single person in the area and no animals near by so I just enjoyed my self, it was like heaven after hiking out! :whoo: Most of the berries probably won't be ready for another week or so and next time I'm bringing buckets. Good luck on the hunt and post some pics.
-
Thanks, some nice Berries would be good.
-
we are going to be heading out sunday morning. we will get settled in and then do a little scouting.
-
Good luck. Did you decide where you will be camping yet?
-
Where are all the Goose prairie bull pictures ? No news for 2 weeks. I am heading up hunting in the Bumping unit for my first elk hunting this year, Going after those spikes . :IBCOOL: I'll be up there Wed - Sun , finally the weather is cooling. If one of you big bull guys need help I have a call & meat pack. Good luck for the last weekend filing those tags. Mike
-
