Ya no kidding..I get dibs on you VG boys when I draw! Good luck! You'll do well!

Hey got a quick question on that goat. Did the shooter have it scored? and did he make book? Looked like a real nice goat. And by the way I am jealous of your tag, congrats and good luck this year!

If I recall correctly it was a few inches shy of a book goat. Blacktailer will know the exact score though and I'm sure he'll respond.

Didn't score this goat. He is a nine inch billy with 5" bases. Just a good representative goat. No big surprises when we walked up on him. Pretty much exactly what we figured he was (measurement-wise). A lot of things factored in to my buddy taking this goat; mainly weather, location of billy and time constraints. There are definately some beasts up there. Being that you're not a Whatcom County local and able to head up the Mt. on short notice, fog will be your greatest obstacle. You will have a great hunt. Streak,Bear and Timber (members on here) are also a couple of guys that know goats and the area very well. Feel free to give me a call at 319-3531 if you want to chat.

Crazy Nanny...you'd never see a smart old Billy doing that!

Been talking with two of the tag holders lately. They must be getting pumped for season to start soon! The late snow has put a damper on scouting this summer but shouldn't be a problem to find them come September 15.
Just want to put it out there that if anyone runs into any problems with goats falling off cliffs and getting stuck in unreachable spots to give me a call. I and a number of my friends have some pretty extensive climbing experience/gear and would be more than happy to get in there and help you get a goat out! Better to get the goat you shoot out off the mountain than have you shoot two!
PM me if you want my phone number for reference!
Good luck everyone! Shoot this guy!

turning down an offe like yours is, well i will say is stupid. :twocents:
-
I remember that billy photo. For say a 3yr old that horn growth is impressive. Find a couple 7-9 yr old grandpa goats and your gonna be looking at a book goat. The genetics look good for that unit.
-
Shane, Thanks again for all your help in 2008! The Goat turned out amazing! Been quietly watching the Goat action!

A co-worker drew one of the Mt. Baker goat tags last year, get this.... on his first drawing application! :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
He could've used your assistance then. He's not allowed to carry a firearm so it was bow only for him. He didn't put a whole lot of effort into it, only went out a couple Saturdays. The closest he could get was 150 yards. Guess what... he ate that tag.
-
12 points for next year... should draw it in the next 15 years or so then... :bash:
-
crazy goats! better get in shape! :chuckle:

Wow, what a shame that was. I would give my eyeteeth for any of the Mt. Baker tags. It was his tag to do with what he wanted, but it seems like such a waste to those who would truly appreciate what they had. I would like to think that that sort of thing doesn't happen very often.

:bash: I told him I could put him on a book billy but I think he was more interested in work. :bash: I can't figure out why guys put in for OIL tags they can't or won't use. :dunno:

Here are some pics from helping out camp cook with his Chowder Ridge hunt on Saturday.
-
I guess its worth saying that they saw two nice billies on Friday but weren't able to close the deal. 37 goats on Saturday but only a small (two or three year old billy - the picture of the lone goat) billy in a cliffed out spot. They are heading back in this week to try to finish it off!
-
Helicopter drop ya off on that ridge in pic 4? :chuckle: That looks friggin STEEP! Go get a good one.

Looks like a trip for the memory book!

These goat tags aren't for the faint of heart. People like to talk about sheep shape... Gotta get in goat shape too. It's no walk in the park.
-
Great thead Shane....I'm getting pumped too, leaving on the 14th. for my goat hunt, can't wait, gonna try to nail a book billy with my bow. I'll have pics when I get back.

I would say that in general, a goat hunt is tougher/harder than a sheep hunt. Just my .02
Good luck!

Went in thursday morning, didnt see any goat til late in the afternoon. They were too far away and not enough daylight left. Friday morning there were not goats in the basin so wer hike up the snow field to the other side of Chowder Ridge. Spotted one lone goat in the rocks and it was a long ways away. We started working towards him and ran into a group of 28 in the Smith basin that we ran into the week before. But this time there looked like there was a Billy. At 600 yrds we moved closer, It was raining/snowing/sleeting with 30 mile an hour winds. The goats got up from their beds and moved towards us. The next thing we knew they were 175 yrds below us. We confirmed it was a Billy. I told Henry "I have a shot." and took it. I hit him in the chest, Henry yelled "Anchor him." which I did. and he rolled, and rolled, and rolled. He's not the biggest Billy, but a true trophy to me. He has nine inch horns, and 5 and 3/8's bases. At 55 years old this is the pinnacle of my hunting career. Thanks to Steve Henry (my hunting buddy for 40 years.), our sons "the goat packers" and SHANVG for all the crucial information. This country will kick your butt, mentally and physically, but is one of the most beautiful spots in the state. I hope everyone has an oppurtunity to experience this hunt. - Camp Cook

Congrats Cook on a great goat and a great hunt. That is definately beautiful country up there and glad to see you did your tag justice. Looks like a very unique Billy with an unusual amount of curl to his horns; that is unless that first picture is deceiving. Great job...

Only had a few days here and there. Seems to want to rain hard when I'm on the mountain. I have this weekend and the last week of the season to fill my tag. Seen a few, but a long ways away.

If my son fills his Nooksack elk tag I may be able to help you a bit. Bear
