:IBCOOL:
I finally drew a tag after years of trying. I'm looking forward to a great hunt with my dad and daughter. Hopefully we will see a lot of deer and maybe even get a chance at a big buck. I would like to beat my biggest which is 169 gross. Not sure what to expect that time of year some early snow would be nice. Nov. 21-30 hopefully they will still be in the rut. If anyone has any tips I would love to hear them. Most of all I'm just looking forward to a great hunt with my family.

I would not expect them to be rutting. I drew that tag some years back and there was no rut activity at all. All the bucks were in bachler groups milling around.
Expect snow and cold. The high for the week we were there was about 33* down to single didgets. The snow gets crunchy and the deer get skiddish.
It is possible to fill that tag with a nice buck but just hope that it's not as cold as when I was up there, it made it a bit harder to hunt. I can not tell you how many blown stalks we had that week due to crunchy snow :bash:
Walk the ridges, looking down on the ravines and each sage brush. There is always a buck behind the sage brush watching you just walk by :chuckle: :chuckle:

Are you kidding me? I spent a day there taking pics during the bow hunt last year and saw lots of rutting bucks, as did all of the other tag holders I spoke with. :dunno:
-
So how did you do? Did you end up getting a buck?
-
Yep.... Im jealous! Congrats
-
5 years ago I had the tag, bucks runnin stupid had to watch the does killed a 152 in 4 hours and saw much bigger, fog was a problem and snow can limit access. Good luck
-
I drew the tag in 2006. Tons of rut activity in my year there. Saw bucks actively breeding their harems. Snow level will help you. Anything over 18" for more than a couple of days will move the deer down. Follow the snow line. Saw 100+ deer in 3 days. Tagged out on a doe. I echo Gasman's statements of it gets really cold; the snow is really crunchy and loud. I was well above the burned lower sections of the unit as that was where the snow was the best and the majority of the numbers of deer were. Saw some nice bucks lower down, but the stalk over the fallen burned timber was really difficult with a bow. Be flexible and don't focus on one exact area.

Not the year we (dougedoug) drew tags :bash:
So how did you do? Did you end up getting a buck?
Nope. Stalked a monster from 400 yards to 45 and had a 2x1 bedded by the tree next to him I did not see. When I drew back for the shot, he jumped from his bed and the big daddy took off heading for Cananda :'(
And I mean "belly dragging", "coat rack", BIG DADDY :bash: Biggest buck I have ever seen :bash:
I had to treck through snow drifts that were nutt-sack deep (and I am not short at all) to get to him :chuckle:
-
Sorry gasman, I thought you were referring to last year.
-
I drew that tag also this year and I've already spent several hours using the search function. There is a lot of info on here and it looks like it will prove to be a great hunt. I'm stoked! :IBCOOL:
-
I've drawn that tag twice since it went to special permit. Both times I had no snow what so ever. Both years I ate my tag. I could have filled it on numerous smaller 3x3's and 4x4's but I was holding out for a 150's + type buck and didn't see one. Pray for snow to move the animals into the area. Congrats! It will be a fun hunt no matter how it turns out. I can't wait to draw it again.
-
So the more research I do, the more excited I get! One thing that caught my eye though is that there is only 5 tags given out. I thought there was a lot more than this but i guess I was wrong. Either way I got the hard part out of the way by drawing the tag, now it's time for the fun part!

??? 48 tags given out.
-
Do not shoot one of these!!! Maybe some of you remember this guy!! :yike:
-
That is one sweet buck!!!!
-
Mtnmuley, how come the reg book says 5 tags? I had thought it was closer to 50 tags myself til I looked in the book last night.
-
Sorry, I was looking at the average points to draw, not the number of permits. That makes more sense!
-
I was there last winter hunting with some guys with doe tags. We saw several bucks and tons of deer. A couple bucks were very nice. There was a lot of snow and it was around 5 - 10 degrees. Make sure you have really good boots and good snow camo. Good luck and keep us posted.
-
You will have a lot of fun; if you enjoy seeing a lot of bucks. The first week of December is pretty much the end of the rut. Bucks will still be tacking does during most of the hunt while losing interest toward the end of the season. The girls are pretty alert so you may have better luck later when some older bucks are off by themselves BUT snow and weather conditions trump everything.
-
BYRD Canyon hunt from the top have someone pick you up at the hiway. Big Bucks ;)
-
My dad drew this tag also, should be a good time. Very excited for him that's for sure.
-
Good luck on your hunt, these are pics from that hunt last year, the second buck pic was shot through a spotter. The buck bedded in the last pic goes a little over 180, a buddy has his sheds.
-
Very nice pics of the area!
-
Some great pics!
-
If I were bowhunting Muleys I would prefer to not hunt the rut.. they move waaay to much and are always around a lotta does. I prefer to stalk a bedded lone buck
-
That pic with the barb wire fence in it is a good spot.........
-
You would be wise to invest in V-Bars for the front and rear too, it would be a shame to have that tag and not be able to get in there, snow machines are nice but I have watched loads of deer take off at the first sound of those things coming from a long way off. :twocents:
-
I'm pretty sure snow machines won't be legal for your hunt - during your dates anyway. ;)

There were some in there last year while we were in there, perhaps illegally but never the less still there.
-
Last year they were pushing for new laws re: snowmachines on the winter range. Fingers crossed.

We were stalking that palmated buck in the pics when we heard some machines coming in the distance. Even though they were still a long way off, the buck heard them and was listening to them while I snapped these shots, he took off in a hurry not to long after this, at that point we had been stalking him for about 2 hours and had gotten to about 100 yards, pretty upsetting actually.
-
No doubt that would drive a guy to drink... He's got 9 lives.

Doubtful my partner would have hit him had we got within shooting distance anyway. :chuckle:

Did I really just say that?

Kinda brings new meaning of bringing a "sixer" along for the trip, huh?! :chuckle:

I love those pics
-
Those are some great pictures thank you. I am looking forward to a great hunt. It's going to be a long summer and fall. Need to do lots of fishing to keep myself busy. I'm going to put off getting new tires till fall and I have 2 sets of chains hopefully that will get me a ways up there. Keep those pictures and tips coming. At least I'll have something to dream about til November. :)
-
Congrats on drawing an awesome tag. We had that late tag last year and got a bunch of snow at the begging of the hunt. We saw decent bucks every day but the bigger bucks I felt showed there faces towards the end of the season. You will need the 2 sets of chains if there is snow. And it does get cold we had single digit temperatures. Walk the ridges and take good binos. take your time with the binos the deer will pop out all over if you take the time to glass good. Here are a couple of pics from last year I shot this buck on the second to the last day. Good luck and keep us posted.

Dandy buck elkslare!
-
That's a very nice buck. I'ld be happy with one like that.

awesome pictures Hunt!! to bad about about that one buck ;) And elk great buck. glad you had fun.

Dale, I love looking at your buck!

Elkslare, Great looking buck! I sent you a PM.....

So everyone is talking about chains for the snow, which I understand, but does anyone have any advice on where to buy chains for 35 inch tires?
-
Nope, But you better find some or barrow a different truck. The big hill in oklahoma gulch gets NASTY..And i mean NASTY.. Put chains on in the middle of it sideways once. Felt cocky.. Then felt stupid.. :twocents:
-
I do a google search if not try your local off road shop. It is no joke up there in the winter it is steep. One hunt we do up there we get dropped off ary 6600 feet and hike down to 2500

I'm not sure if they go up to 35's but the Les Schwab light truck tire chains are great. Easy to put on and take off with great traction. They are not cheap about $300 for 2 sets.

Les Schwab.
i have Semi truck chains that I use for my jeep.
-
Congratulations on the tag, there is great advice all over this thread. Get to the top and use good binoculars. Chains and a couple of shovels are a must. I got chains for my 35's from Les Schwab. I hunted this unit the year that it was open as a general archery season for bow and shot a 162 three hours into opening day, he was walking around chasing does on top of a knob that he could see 360 degrees. It was around November 20th and they were rutting hard, they might be done rutting by the end of your hunt but you will see a ton of deer and hopefully get close to a bruiser. Bigger than your best of 169 will be tough but doable if you really work at it or get lucky. When they get that big an inch on each tine and a little more mass turns a 165 into a 180. I wish you luck and if that fails wear out a set of boots, chains and binoculars and you will be successful.

Here's a goodun the pard killed over there a couple years ago with his bow. Almost looks blacktailish.....
-
me, my dad , and my brother also were drawn for this hunt this year. it is the first time for me and my dad but my brothers drew it in 06. and both harvested good bucks including a 150" with a 26" spread. also in 08 a hunting buddy drew the tag and i spent a couple of days in the entiat with him. we will be relying on the snow fall, in 08 we didnt see any bucks untill the snow fell, after that they started moving in. and the road conditions were terrible even with only about six inches on the ground. 4 chains are a must, if your having trouble finding your size, you could always add links to a set of 33 inch chains.
-
So, from anyone with a lot of experience over on this hunt what would be a realistic size to set as a goal? I mean, I am gonna head over about 5 days before the hunt starts and stay for the entire hunt. If I set a goal of shooting a 170" buck am I atleast gonna see a couple in this range? I just don't want to set an unrealistic goal. From what I have read and from talking to people, a goal of a 170" buck is pushing it but is a possibility. Is this right? I am not expecting to have an opportunity at a 170" buck everyday but atleast see a couple during the 2 weeks that I'll be there. Any input?
-
Sure there are 170 bucks up there. But don't be disappointed if you don't get one. I would expect 150.
-
I have hunted this unit four times now and have always seen bucks in the 190 class, but the largest I have gotten is 189. I have hunted it with and without snow and the only difference is the bucks are much harder to spot without the snow. You will see lots of small heards of does and most will have a mature buck close by. Spend lots of time glassing and you will see lots of nice bucks. With the wet spring we had there should be some real dandys this year. Good luck

Post a pic of that 189 buck.
-
Pics? I would love to see 189 buck out of there. That is probally one of the biggest I've heard geting shot up there.
-
Hopefully I did it right. I know of a 198 buck shot on the gov tag up there a few years back. The year I shot this buck my hunting partner shot a mid 170's and I got footage of a other buck in the low 190's. The year after I got it on video, we drew again and my partner missed it twice. There are two area's we have found that always hold big bucks, snow or not and one other area that is dependent on snow and it comes there are deer everyware.
-
fantastic collection wehunt, what year did you take the big entiat buck?

Coldsteel3d, I would lower your goal to about 150, otherwise you may be terribly disappointed if your holding out for a 170 buck. I'm not saying that they aren't there. They are, I've seen them. BUT two different seasons I had a tag and was holding out for a 150 goal and was prepared to eat my tag and that's exactly what happened. It's a great tag to have it can be the best hunt that you've ever been on. Just don't set yourself up for disappointment by setting that high of a goal. Remember it's archery and many things can go wrong trying to close the distance within bow range. Have a great time and keep us posted. I can't wait to draw that tag again.

great info and pictures, this is why this sight is great. good luck to everyone that drew.
-
The last time we drew the tag was 4 years ago and that was the year I shot this buck. I hope I draw it again before I die of old age and can still get around. I hunt Idaho every year and Montana, Utah and Oregon when I draw and this is the area I would spend all my time in if I could draw tags. The Books cliffs in Utah is also a good hunt, but tough to draw.
-
Here is a pic of a buck I took back in 05 out of the entiat, but I missed a bigger one 3 times :bash: :bash: :bash:
Looking forward to hunting it again sometime, but will be helping some friends out this year!
