-
no help here but that is awsome...looking for that tag myself
-
Congrats on your tag and welcome to the site. Maybe you should get there and look around, its a great unit and with some effort you should do fine good luck
-
I have a buddy who is a guide up in that area and I am sure he will point you in the right direction........for a small fee and some meat. :sry:
-
Buy a map and hope to get lucky, because it would be a good trade for a little meat for some local knowledge :twocents: And congrats on you 5th post

Finally after only 7 years????????? My neighbor has put in now for 18 years and still nothing. You are a lucky man with only 7
-
what happened to the 5th post
-
Lots of sour grapes this time of year! Since I too put in for that tag, but will probably never get drawn, more than happy to share where I have seen moose. If it was me I would spend some time off of Bartlette Rd. just East of the ski lodge off of Flowery Trail Rd. There is a lot of area to hunt in there and I have seen several moose back in there. It's a good place to start. Good luck and congratulations.
-
it sounds like there are some sour grapes out there. i feel like i got very lucky drawing the tag and i appreciate your help very much thank you... jkeen33
-
Not sour grapes I help alot of guys. (and have an awesome tag this year) but you did not get to read the post that was erased and I dont agree with just tellin someone exactly where to go, what gun to bring, how high to aim, what a moose looks like, how to skin, where to take the meat, and have a guy say I will not share any meat and just want info. Oh maybe a little bit of sour grapes. :chuckle: On a further note I think your road is gated now.
-
benhuntin i was just asking for some friendy advice. :sry: thats all not asking what the hell they look like or where to shoot one :tung: just plain friendly advice about the gmu.. not asking to pay or give my meat away to a guide thats all ..
-
Good luck
-
That road is open. Just came back from there. If there is a moose standing on that rd. It deserves to be shot. It's a big area back there and going to be a lot of work to find one. It's a good starting point though. I would have IM'd that info like I have to I don't know how many other guys on this site, but getting tired of seeing the nasty comments to a guy asking for a little help. Thought that's what this site was for.
-

I think what benhuntin was getting at is you should go introduce yourself, do some research and contribute to the site before just posting.......help me, I got a tag and I dont know anything about the area, as one of your first posts.
I on the other hand was just trying to tell you that my buddy would help you for a little meat. I understand that you want 600lbs of meat for yourself, but thats a lot of meat to pack by yourself. Believe me, if its hot and you shoot a moose very far from the road, you will wish you had help otherwise you will slowly realize all of your meat is spoiling as you make trip after trip trying to get it out.
This isnt a deer and its not going to be two trips out and your done. If you are by yourself, you will probably make eight or more trips. Anyways enough with my ranting because I dont know anything about that area, so I cant help you out.
Good luck, shoot straight and enjoy it because it should be quite the experience!

I'd 375 Rugered his arss
-
which one is better
-
Not sure I could have passed on that first one. What you took is pretty nice looking too.
I spend a lot of time in 117. Would love to get that tag someday.
-
thank you .And thanks for the pics. cant wait to get out there and start looking for a bull like them . :IBCOOL: and i have been coming to this site for years now just havent posted alot . wasnt trying to be rude if i came across like that im sorry. just asking for alittle help about that gmu . been hunting in wa state all my life. and the area i have been putting in for 7 years got shut down this year so thats why i tried 117 .... thanks
-
If you're willing to pack out a moose about 4+ miles in, I swear you can get one bigger than the ones in the earlier post. :)
-
Don't think I could have passed up either of those moose. Might have to do some hiking in there to see what possibilities exist before I put in for that hunt.
-
Breath Deep! It's not if you get one, it's which one will you get. There are plenty of people who will help you if your patient. Enjoy every minute of it.
-
Here's the thread of my 2008 49 moose hunt. When I get some time I will PM you info. PM me your # and I'll give you a call. This is a great tag. :IBCOOL:

I am on both sides of the spectrum here. I think that just asking for help is a little tacky but some people need to understand that drawing an OIL tag is not easy. If someone that draws the tag lives eight hours away from the area, how can you fault them for not knowing it like the back of their hand like you may. I posted before that my neighbor has put in for 18 years and nothing. He is in his late 60's and more than likely not in a position to do a ton of pre scouting, especially considering he may never draw. Anyone that draws can never put in again, for gods sake help a little or if you dont want to then dont. Either way get off his case and let the ones that can help do as they wish.
-
Back in the day we didn't have the internet. I look at it as one of my tools for scoutting. Hell the first time I came on this site was when I drew my 49 moose tag. I put my daughter and I in for Raymond cow tags, never been down there. And wouldn't you know it, we have two tags and yes I asked and got some good info on here. Thanks guys, it's lots of fun to draw a tag and part of the fun is doing your research.
-
Like said before up off flowery trail rd. is a great place to start. Seen lots of moose up there. Another place to look is on Iron mtn. off of Immel rd. N of Chewelah, haven't seen near as many moose there but there are some. Good luck.
-
Thanks guys for all the help its really nice of all of you. im not a new member. i have been a member since 09 and had been coming to this site before that . the asking for a little advice on my moose tag wasnt my first post .
-

I was up there last deer season, hunted the top to the hwy down by the old alcoia plant. Lots of moose sign and very little deer sign. There w/lots of moose pits so the bulls w/rutting.
-
The area around Power Lake would be worth checking out as well.

Not knocking you dude but it cracks me up when folks say finally got drawn with 7 points.. $hit, i have 16 for moose and so does everyone else i know... The moose gods havent blessed my crew yet.. Thats why were lucky to live close to canada.. Your a lucky dude moose hunting is the coolest hunt you will ever go on so enjoy and get a crew to help unless your grizzly adams..

The moose are thick up there. You won't have any problem finding them. I see big moose almost everytime I scout for deer in that unit. Start by purchasing all of the topos for that unit, key in on areas that look like good moose habitat and follow up on google earth. You spend a few hours doing this and it will save you a lot of time when your boots hit the ground and you will likely find many areas of interest. I do this exact thing for anything I hunt if I have never been to the area and it has never steered me wrong. I don't think I have ever received advice from anyone on where to go.

What does moose habitat look like?
Elk like grass for food, but are big animals so like the cool north facing slopes. Steep, but not too steep.
I have moose that come into my yard near Spokane, so I will look for manicured yards and well traveled walking trails and artificial fountain for them to drink out of. And when I hunt, have my 2 and 4 year old girls beside me singing...cause that's what attracts moose...so they say.

clearcuts=moose

But i did see a nice black bear and a hand full of deer witch was nice to see .Im not sure where the moose are right now im thinking they are still in the low land and haven came up higher yet where we were seeing all the old crap every five feet in the road.. Maybe next weekend i will see some moose and have some pictures to share . :dunno:
-
Moose dont go down for winter :twocents:
-
I saw two Moose in 117 this weekend. Both bulls and both neck deep in water.
-
Don't worry, you'll find them. The unit is crawling with moose. Talk to the locals, the few I have met are really helpful. If you haven't found them by sept. I'll ask my brother where he has been seeing them, besides his backyard. :)

Thanks guys . I have been kinda waiting for sept. to get here. then I'm going to do alot of scouting and try some calling. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: plus by then bear will be open too.
-
I drew That tag in 2002. I took 40" bull on boyer mtn. I look for clearcuts or logged areas a few yrs old. Moose seemed to be more active in the mornings and evenings. Watch the wind, moose seemed to careless that were only yards away ,unless they picked up your scent. Good luck! argali
-
Moose are laying in the creek bottoms now, staying cool. Things will look WAY different on opening day. Don't get discouraged!
-
yeah... theres alot of moose in this unit. all the moose I have seen lately are in wet draws..big timber...much cooler in there. Catch them out feed in the first hour of light tho
-
The rut will be on when you are out. Don't worry.
-
Last year for the October opener it was really hot. 85+ degrees at 5000'. We found moose low and in the creek drainages. Hunted hard around Bunchgrass and saw nothing much fresh. Dropped down lower on the Idaho side of the unit in the drainages and found moose. Still have over 150 pounds in the freezer I would say. MMMMM. My bad, wrong unit but same idea, cool and wet!
-
I was out hunting elk in early october last year.. I remember an extremly wet hunts..rain
-
Staying cool is what they do for mid day heat. Mornings and evening they will be out.
-
Well i will pray for 40 degrees Oct 1. Right now I'm just tring to gather all the stuff i think i might need for the hunt. I'm working on my bike and trailer like the one Pa Ben used on his hunt  i will post pics of it when its done. and i hope to get out real soon and do some scouting and calling :IBCOOL: I just cant wait been counting the days down  And thanks for all the great info guys .
-
It was 25 degrees October 1st when I had my tag. 75-80 during the day.
-
When I was sleeping under that tree last year it was rather nippy as well. WELL below freezing.
-

So i hope it will work in the woods. now i will be working on doing some scouting and learn how to call them in. Oct 1 is coming so fast :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: Just cant wait .
