There are moose in the ENTIRE unit. EVERYWHERE. You can kill one in the first 5 minutes of the hunt if you want. Its a frickin turkey shoot. I'm not sure if its even possible to NOT harvest one. :dunno: Maybe if you choose to hunt with a slingshot and hunt for only one weekend. Have you ever been to area?
Thats been my experience working up there also. Great tag to draw for sure.

Here is the advice I have to offer. Drive up the road (any road that is open) and look out any window in your truck and you will see a moose. :chuckle: good luck, it should be a fun and easy hunt. (the pack out may not be so easy though)
If you were to hunt this way and shoot your moose from the road, the pack out shouldn't be THAT hard.

friend of mine got one one year ...and he went to town and talked to a couple locals in a resturant and they told him where to go and he was shocked when he drove up this road after 5 days of seeing nothen and there he was ... shot him and went back to town and the same guys helped him pack it out ... now thats being friendly ...not many like that left anymore .... :tup:I drew in 1999 and had the same experience. Unlike deer and elk, locals seem willing to share information about moose because you're not competing. After several scouting trips I met two loggers that befriended me and helped me locate a bull. They helped me after I shot it, and one offered to hang it in his garage and butcher it for me.
Spend some time over there. Get to know the roads, meet some locals, and remember you have two months to hunt: the first in the rut, and the second in some snow possibly. The best moose I saw were higher up. The areas around Little Calispell Peak was where I saw the most moose.

His one and only post is where are they? I'm not gettin testy because I didn't get drawn (didn't even put in for anything) it's when people get a tag for something and just want location's handed to him before he even starts looking. Maybe after a couple trips over and scouting and hasn't seen anything then ask for some help. Maybe he should tell us a little about himself before asking.
I'm not sure what the big deal is either...This is an OIL tag. It seems that some people expect the 15,000 + people who applied for this tag to already know something about the hunt. If people didn't apply for tags they knew nothing about, our drawing odds would be a whole heck of alot better.
And what's the deal with wanting people to introduce themselves. Does anyone really even read the introductions? If someone was to ask you while out hunting to help pack out a downed animal would you request him to tell you a little bit about himself? :chuckle: :chuckle:

So a guy draws a OIL tag, one he probably never figured on drawing so he's never hunted in the area. He googles washington moose tag and hits this site. He joins because it seems like a great resource. asks if anyone knows the area and maybe a place he should start looking. what's wrong with pointing him in a direction to help a guy out? how many posts are required before you can ask for a general location to get started looking? is there a number required?
sorry for the erroneous information on the survival school. i've never been in the area as i hunt the lower portion of 117. just passing on what i heard.

Enjoy the LONG drive over there a couple times. bring extra batteries or a charger for your GPS unit that will be on while you aimlessly travel up and down may a mountain road mapping out your hunt on your GPS.

Don't wast your money on a map, save it for gas. More moose around then you can shake a stick at. I drew the same tag in '08, lots for fun enjoy the ride. ;)

I don't hunt up there much, but it seems like every time I do I see moose. The big one I saw up there seemed to dwarf every moose I have seen to date. Mt. Hunt on the ski resort, I was up there elk hunting and saw some nice bulls. There is a road that you can drive all the way to the top. Also, just north of Chewelah on hwy. 395 look for a road called Immel RD. Take a right on that and then look for Branch Rd. There is some good hunting there and lots of places to check for bulls. Thats where I have seen them, its public land, hope that helps. Good luck!
Parents live off Immel rd just off the hwy. about once a year they will have a moose walk thru the property two weeks ago they had a cougar walk thru in broad daylight. Anyways back to the topic the road off of Immel is called Iron mtn-Branch rd. That up off the rd is all public land and have seen alot of elk killed up there and have seen a few moose up there but not as many as over by the ski hill up flowery trail rd.
Good luck with this hunt and I apologize for the attitude yesterday. If you get one down let me know i've got access to horses and quads at chewelah.

There is no such thing as a guiding license in this state. However you would need a permit if hunting on National Forest.

Lets revisit the quality post that started this thread above.
I do not feel bad at all about any responses to a post like that....I do not care how many posts you have under your belt when you post a message such as that one. I will draw a quality bull tag (or any one with 1,000's of posts) and post the exact same message and lets see how well that goes over.

And I see your point, and its a good one at that. Thisis why I have suggested (a few times) that upon signing up that newcomers should be greeted with a screen introducing them to a little H-W netiquette before they can log on with that infamous "I maek furst poast."

Or what gets to me even more is people who ask and get lots of replies and not so much as a "thanks guys" simply rude, but I guess in the new society we live in manners are unimportant :dunno:
