anyone hunt deer in unit 251? looking for any tips or info on this unit. i usually hunt naneum but thats 3pt or better. and if i drive up the road a few more miles i can hunt anterless as well...
-
I been wondering the same thing..... Kind of SOL for Archery deer this year as the wife will be going for her first hunt, so I will be taking her for modern. Probably carry my bow along with me in case a great opportunity comes up.
Planning on Archery elk, but have not decided which side or where yet......... :dunno:

yeah when i archery hunt deer i just hunt the same area as i do elk just because. i spend that first week of september just hunting deer scouting for elk. never really go anywhere strictly for deer unless its during the late season. but this year i wanna try a couple new areas on the eastside for deer. and with mission being right up the road and 3pt or antlerless i might as well give it a try.

There are a few in 251, and as usual you have to get as far away from the roads as you can. LOTS of road hunters. Some of the private land is exceptional if you can get permission. Here is a picture of my oldmans first deer he shot 4 or 5 years ago. It was 242 dressed! It makes all my 200-220 lb blacktail and whitetail look like roe deer. This buck was in the heavy timber with a few others, he was still hunting and had an 80 yrd on the run shot. The deer jumped off an embankment an was litteraly shot in mid air. Good shot by my oldman but he has had plenty of government training. Our family (extended) has been hunting there since the 40's. Many giants back in the day I wish I had photos

Another shot.

thats a nice buck.
ive seen some big ones in mission while driving from cle elum up to highway 2 but never hunted it.
i really dont mind getting a big buck this year though. i just wanna tag out early even if its a doe. so i can focus on elk...if i dont i spend alot of time looking for deer when i should be looking for elk.
-
We see alot of big bulls and cows where we hunt. Ive never seen any thing less than a 5x5 on the hoof. All sheds we have ever found have all been 4's and up. Do you puy in for bull tags?
-
nah i dont...i was gonna this year but dont have the money to buy my lisence.
i use to hunt deer right in the lower southwest corner of the naneum unit and seen lots a very nice bucks but now that little area i hunt has been over run with elk and the deer seemed to have moved out.

Very nice looking buck. The biggest buck I saw two years ago was crossing Blewitt, headed that direction. I almost tagged him with the front of my Ram. Like I got a real close look at him. :yike:

that mission unit is one that i would like to spend more time in. too bad it would cost me and arm and a leg to get over there right now!
-
My son had a doe tag a couple years back and we cold hunted it to no avail. I never thought we would have to eat a doe tag but we did that year, we just didn't see anything (granted we only were able to hunt 2 days due to some other commitments :() It was cold and miserable when we did go and we were not able to scout it out earlier in the year. Iv'e hunted many times just over the pass on the Cle Elum side , just not there :dunno:

my hunting buddie hit a 170+class buck coming down blewitt last year. it took off into the trees and he never found it. totaled his f350 lol

Mission is a great hunt for scenery and a good workout, very up and down. I usually hunt it once or twice a year. You won't see as many deer as most other units, but the country grows big bucks. The biggest bodied muley I've ever seen was hanging in a camp back in there. Last time I hunted it I kicked out a 2 point with really good genetics, already tall and wide for a young deer, also the wife and I kicked out a really large buck with no shot opportunity, but it amazed me how he just zipped over a steep hill like nothing into an extremely thick bowl. Ditto on the road hunters, in my opinion the only way to hunt it is jumping into the timber away from the roads, I have never seen a deer off the road there.

Did anyone see that big buck that was picked up by the DOT on Blewitt Pass?

Yea the pictures of that Big boy are awesome. A couple with the buck along side the road and one shows the rack with a tape stretched out. In the Lower 30 inches catagory. 33" to be exact.

Where is the photo of the road kill? 10 years ago my cousin was walking up a draw and noticed a set of antlers sticking up above some brush. Thinking it was an elk he kept going up the draw. When he reached the top he turned and looked back down he noticed a group of deer had moved up the hillside where he was. He saw a buck in the group and put the glasses on him. He said he just about soiled himself. He figured it was between 32-34 wide 24- 26 tall and had 7 on one side and 8 on the other. When he realized that is what he walked by he felt like crying. he was less than 100yrds from it when he walked by. He did attempt to put a stalk on it but the game was on and he never saw that deer again. No one believed him until my uncle saw it later that season! They do exsist but are burried in that timber like ticks.

i looked for the road kill buck on this site but couldnt find it.
the biggest buck i seen was just outside the mission unit about 1 mile south when i was hunting naneum. there are some truely monsterous bucks in that area. it was a 6x7 with eye guards, i was glassing it from about 1000yds across a very steep canyon. there was no way i could make a stalk on it. so i just sat there for 30 minutes watching it feed up and over the next ridge. i would put it around the 200" mark. and i have seen 20+ bucks on that same ridge over the last 7 years but never that same buck

Do you ever see anyone else? Where we go in we never see another soul.

i havent hunted mission yet...this will be my first year.
but the area im talking about where ive seen all the big bucks is just outside of mission...and i actually havent seen a single deer there in the last few years. it has been over run with elk...
but i have never seen another hunter in that little area. except for one guy and his kid who have property bordering this little area. they always come up and chat with me when they see me pull up.

Kill a big one this year! ;)
-
you know what ive had my buddie (new to hunting) with me the alst few years. and he has ruined alot of chances at some nice bukcs for me. last year i missed a big 5x5 at 40yds with my 44mag, shot right over him.
this year im going back to archery to get away from the people. im hunting with some new guys, and im gonna put some serious time scouting mission this year for deer.
ive went far to long without filling a tag. im due for a monster.

That could do some major damage to your vehicle

Nice Buck for sure

Sucks he had to be killed by a car...

DAMN that is a huge buck, I would have liked to put him in my cross hairs!!!!
-
At least he got to breed...
-
Wasn't there a big controversy over what was going to happen to the rack of that roadkill buck?
-
Yea there was I guess they(game Dept) went to their house looking for it. Never heard what happened. I know alot of times they have a place where they dispose of the kills. Like some side road in a ditch. So my guess is they told them they disposed of it there. But thats pure speculation on my part
-
I'm pretty sure that bucks horns ended up at some game dept office.... Not 100% positive though.

251 is my home unit. There are some nice deer in there but you just have to find them. My family has got countless deer from that unit. the trick is staying low. What I mean by that is hunting the public land right next to the privet. There are some nice areas up Mountain home road. Also if you can hunt right above an orchard its great, probley the best. Lots of animals, deer bear and elk. After they get done picking the pears there is always some left on the ground or trees and the animals love the ripe or rotten fruit.

Nice Buck for sure
I'd left my truck in the ditch and took the deer!!!!!!!!!!!!
