Title: Capitol Forest Nov 1-23 permit
Post by: Meateater2011 on June 18, 2011, 04:23:42 PM
I was lucky enough to draw a MF Nov 1-23 Capitol forest any buck permit. Anyone know of a place to start?

you will have a good time, lots of clearcuts, and come Nov 1st. you will almost be all by yourself.  You have multiple entrances to the forest.  Are you familiar with this unit at all?

The only place i really hunt is the C9000. I would think the second week in Nov should be good.

Did you see the harvest reports for last years hunt?

Only 2 two points taken.

Must have been terrible hunters or faaaar too picky if they went without filling their tag.  Was my second choice hunt, largely because it's close to home, but you shouldn't have too tough a time finding a good 2 pt. at the least.

I'd start on Google Earth and find a promising area in terms of terrain, cover, proximity to roads, etc. if you haven't been in there much.

Not a quality tag imo, but its a good one. Need to do some scouting for sure, but you should be able to find a decent buck. My advice is get a quad, you may not be allowed to ride the trails but you can ride the roads

I was able to harvest this buck out that unit a few years back. Hope his off spring are still around. The unfortunate part, is the area i hunt was freak in logged this winter. I cant believe how much area was cut. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems when ever I find a good place they log it (frustrating).

The deer are using those new cuts already.  I wouldn't let the fact that they cut it discourage you from that area.

My wife had that tag several years ago, but back then the season was only 10 days.  We saw lots of does and only two nice 4 points.  Neither of the bucks gave her time to get a shot and she ended up not filling her tag, but it was still a very good hunt.  The best part was being out there without seeing any other hunters; it was a great time.

If I remember correctly the success rate that year was 0 for the permit holders, so it is definitely not a sure thing, but should be a fun hunt.

I agree.
I went out with a permit holder during the old ten day season and we only saw a couple two points. Granted, we didn't get out of the truck much and only went out a couple days. I think only a couple deer were killed then as well. I am sure many permit holders killed deer during the general season.

I know I applied my wife for it only as a season extender. She passed on a couple spikes in the general season but killed a two point during the permit.

The "Quality" is in the amount of time, not the animal according to DFW.

I thought you and your wife were the two to fill your tags? I was referring to those who didn't fill their tags. . .  :dunno:

With ten days of hunting the first week or so of November there are really no excuses in any unit unless you're too picky. And that's not to say you should be able to fill your tag by driving around all day either, you've still got to get out and hunt.

At least with state land their rotations are in the neighborhood of 60+ years. . . Timber patches on Weyerhauser land, especially with them cutting anything they possibly can to keep their quarterly numbers up for their stock price lately, only last to about 35-40 years old in general.  They just start getting good and huntable and its gone.  :'(

Yes we did...

BTW, it was supposed to be a  :chuckle:  instead of a  :dunno: . After re-reading it looked a bit harsh instead of funny.
