Title: 2011 Trail Cam pics New Update 10-09 : New Deadeye Pics
Post by: DBHAWTHORNE on June 18, 2011, 10:58:46 PM: This year is starting out great. One of the big boys we were chasing last year has shown up again. We call him deadeye due to his injured left eye. Those of you who saw my pics last year may remember this buck. You can notice his droopy left eye in this pic.

There is noticeable growth between 12 and 17 June.

I know velvet can be tricky but I agree it appears that he will have great mass. I look forward to seeing your pics. I have cameras over several types of mineral licks. Currently my cheap 200lbs mix of Dicalcium Phospahte/Trace Mineral/Stock Salt is bringing in the most animals.

Me too...it is always great to connect on an animal you have history with. It was this animal I was hunting last year when I blew the rear diff on my Tacoma and had to leave my Samurai stranded on a forest service road. It put a serious damper on my late season. I hope things will be different this year.

That buck should be a masher this year ;) hope u get the the other on cam again!

For some reason they all like bedding there. I even have some photos of the big guy bedded down in that spot.

That is what I was thinking. A very wet year....and I am seeing a ton of lush clover in the clearcuts and logging roads.

Why are those pictures purple?

Almost every free moment I get we are in the woods. Enjoying whitetail is year round affair for my family.

The pics are purple because the IR filter is constantly over the lens. It seems to be the most common flaw I have with this model.

I think so too. I am interested to see what he looks like when he peels the velvet. Like last year it looks like he will still have short tines compared to the rest of his frame.

I agree. I think this one just might be a 20 inch or over inside. The one my wife shot last year was 19 6/8 and this one looks to be at least that wide. I am really interested in what his mass measurements will be. Hopefully he will give us a chance to put a tape on them.

Post by: DBHAWTHORNE on July 24, 2011, 08:54:37 AM: Deadeye hasn't shown up on any of my cams in three weeks. The biggest thing I have on cam right now is a 120 inch 5x5. Here are a couple small bulls that are showing up regularly. The first one comes in with a group of cows.

I pulled the card since I was in there and I was pleased to see that Deadeye has shown up again (3 weeks after last pics). He has put on some good growth in that time. He is definitely larger than last year!

He definitely did. With these old mountain bucks I always wonder what is going on with them (did he get eaten by a mountain lion, did he die of old age, etc. etc.)...pretty soon we will have to worry about the wolves getting them too.

He is also showing up less and less during daylight. Last year we had him in front of the camera during daylight on two occasions in late rifle but by the time late bow came around he vanished. I only need him to make a showing once. Hopefully he makes that error.

Here are a couple of recent elk pics for you. Nothing big...but a handful are coming in during daylight and they are in an "any elk" unit. I also have a handful of cows coming in so hopefully these bulls stick around.

I hear you. I am still looking for other bucks too. I would love for my wife or I to take deadeye but I have always notice when I focus on "the one" I usually end up eating tag soup or shooting a doe for meat on the last evening of the last day. I would like to find "the ones" ....3-4 150+ bucks...that would make me feel a little more confident...that being said I do love almost nothing more than matching wits with one specific buck.

Even with the short tine length that one buck is really nice. He would definitely be hard to pass up unless you know that no one will take him.

Best of luck to you too brother.....I agree...very weird... I normally have no issues finding 140 bucks...this year I have only had one buck over 140 on camera and that is deadeye... I have seen a few 140 plus bucks in the fields but not as many as I have seen in years past.

He hasn't come into the camera since 9 August but he showed up again less than one hour after shooting light on the last day of Archery.

I have daylight photos and the eye just appears a little lazy more so than anything else. That being said... I have a bigger buck that will be my primary target during the late season.
