This year is starting out great. One of the big boys we were chasing last year has shown up again. We call him deadeye due to his injured left eye. Those of you who saw my pics last year may remember this buck. (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc413%2Fdbhawthorne%2FHUNT01574.jpg&hash=0132d67dfdf2a7e021e41d567edadaa8d8f62928)
Well here he is this year. (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1210.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc413%2Fdbhawthorne%2FHUNT0152.jpg&hash=6d1e17400b89fa58fb6099fb165750893fce6ceb)
You can notice his droopy left eye in this pic.

There is noticeable growth between 12 and 17 June.

I know velvet can be tricky but I agree it appears that he will have great mass. I look forward to seeing your pics. I have cameras over several types of mineral licks. Currently my cheap 200lbs mix of Dicalcium Phospahte/Trace Mineral/Stock Salt is bringing in the most animals.
-
Lookin good DB!! Hope you can connect on him this year!
Me too...it is always great to connect on an animal you have history with. It was this animal I was hunting last year when I blew the rear diff on my Tacoma and had to leave my Samurai stranded on a forest service road. It put a serious damper on my late season. I hope things will be different this year.
-
mine are on all new spots.. one lick is being pounded.. another has a horse hitting it :bash: no idea what the deal with this horse is on iep running free.
That buck should be a masher this year ;) hope u get the the other on cam again!
-
Nice buck for sure! Goodluck hunting him this year!
-
Gonna be a big boy!
-
Did anyone catch the other buck in the picture, laying down at the base of the tree in the background? Doesnt look real big but he's there.
-
Beautifull animal, sure hope you can keep up with him throughout the velvet season. Didn't even see that other buck!

For some reason they all like bedding there. I even have some photos of the big guy bedded down in that spot.
-
Nice buck and cool pics! Looks like he is gonna have that split eye guard again!...Hope you get him this year! Good luck!

Some pics from this week and a couple more to come later.

DB im jealous

Thanks. The deadeye buck only came in once the past week and he didn't stick around long. He has always been very sporadic. Hopefully I can get a few more pics of him over the next couple of weeks.

I live in Cheney but I hunt several units. All my WA pics this season will come from 130, 127, 117, 121, or 101.

That is what I was thinking. A very wet year....and I am seeing a ton of lush clover in the clearcuts and logging roads.

Almost every free moment I get we are in the woods. Enjoying whitetail is year round affair for my family.
The pics are purple because the IR filter is constantly over the lens. It seems to be the most common flaw I have with this model.

I think so too. I am interested to see what he looks like when he peels the velvet. Like last year it looks like he will still have short tines compared to the rest of his frame.
I definitely look forward to seeing your pics.
-
Nice pics of him... I agree he will have short tines, but he looks to of gained in width and alot of mass!
-
He is going to be beautiful !
-
Nice pics of him... I agree he will have short tines, but he looks to of gained in width and alot of mass!
I agree. I think this one just might be a 20 inch or over inside. The one my wife shot last year was 19 6/8 and this one looks to be at least that wide. I am really interested in what his mass measurements will be. Hopefully he will give us a chance to put a tape on them.
-
That buck is unreal. The mass almost makes it look fake! The buck you posted stamped 6/26 looks like a beauty too! How much longer do tines usually get from here on out?
-
I hope you guys put an arrow thru him in Sept! ;)
-
nice buck... keep the pics comming!!!
-
Two great bucks in your area! hope to see one hit the ground this year, good luck.

DB im jealous
:yeah:

looks good...how many trail cams are you running?
-
I have between 8-11 running at anytime

wet spring= lots of mass! hes going to be a brute either way you call it. for what he lacks in tine length he will make up in mass!
-
Awesome pics.

That is going to be a nice buck!

Deadeye hasn't shown up on any of my cams in three weeks. The biggest thing I have on cam right now is a 120 inch 5x5. Here are a couple small bulls that are showing up regularly. The first one comes in with a group of cows.

DB You have some great photos the Blonde Bear is awesome, great bucks bulls bears have a fun time notching your tag this season!
-
Deadeye is back and big....pics coming in a few hours!
-
Still waiting..... :chuckle:
-
I was having a problem with elk brushing up against my camera so I went in today so I could set it higher. I pulled the card since I was in there and I was pleased to see that Deadeye has shown up again (3 weeks after last pics). He has put on some good growth in that time. He is definitely larger than last year!

wow DB! :yike:

hot damn!!! MASHER!

:yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: Man what a great thread! What a totally awesome way to watch the antlers grow. It is no wonder he has not shown in weeks he is mutating :chuckle:. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us.
-
I have really enjoyed watching him grow too... He probably won't grow a ton more but most of his tines and mainbeams are still fairly rounded so we should see at least a little more growth.
-
He had you worried...didn't he? Glad he is back! Wish mine would come back from last year. :'(
-
He had you worried...didn't he? Glad he is back! Wish mine would come back from last year. :'(
He definitely did. With these old mountain bucks I always wonder what is going on with them (did he get eaten by a mountain lion, did he die of old age, etc. etc.)...pretty soon we will have to worry about the wolves getting them too.
-
Great buck! How do you get him to "pose" like that?

At his age I am not sure he would make it another year. :chuckle:

I have minerals on the ground that he is licking and there is a little bit of corn but it's mostly gone (bears and elk).

They have really mowed down the white clover you can see on the ground behind him.

That's is one beautiful looking critter! Great pics, almost like hes showing off what he has with all them different poses. Hope you get to see him like that later on this.

I love the bear pics that is awsome and the brown with the stripe down his back wow awsome color phase bear right there! would love to find one like him..
-
Those are some sweet bear pics DB, Deadeye is looking pretty good as well.
-
Some daytime pics are good, lets hope he keeps it up through the opener.
He is a beautiful buck!
-
DB... I am definitely hoping he keeps it up into September. He was coming in everyday but now only every few days. He is also showing up less and less during daylight. Last year we had him in front of the camera during daylight on two occasions in late rifle but by the time late bow came around he vanished. I only need him to make a showing once. Hopefully he makes that error.
-

I had a whole mess of pics with those bears wrestling around on several different days. They play rough though..the brown one was bleeding after this match.
-
Awesome pics! Have you put out apples yet?

When do you start throwing out actual bait?
-
I started a couple of week ago. Before that it was only minerals.
-
the bear with the mowhawk better cowboy up :IBCOOL:
-
That mohawk bear is AWESOME! Sweet buck too of course.
-
That chocolate bear must be a bit of a coward. Why else would he have a yellow streak down his back? :chuckle: I had a run in once while shed hunting with a bear that looked very similar to him only his head was also yellow. Love the pictures and the mass on Old Deadeye. Good luck pinning him down this fall.
-
HOG of a WT...... That honey striped bear is very cool.... Great pics....
-
Awesome pics DB.
-
 :tup:very nice db
-
I will try to post more as I get them. It is definitely a lot of fun to watch these animals on trail cameras.

Here are a couple of recent elk pics for you. Nothing big...but a handful are coming in during daylight and they are in an "any elk" unit. I also have a handful of cows coming in so hopefully these bulls stick around.

Sorry...didn't get the memo. :chuckle: You have some nice animals on cam again this year.

Yeah, not bad for me this year. The one deer that did return this year that I had my eyes on has digressed from last year. Guess he is past his prime. The one new buck I got on cam this year that I really want only showed up once. And one of the other new bucks that I got on cam early on in his growth I decided to give him another year to put on some tine length. So I am still looking for some other bucks.
Deadeye is a stud this year and I hope to see him on your wall next year.

Awsome pics. Cant wait to see u put that bull and deadeye on the ground.

I hear you. I am still looking for other bucks too. I would love for my wife or I to take deadeye but I have always notice when I focus on "the one" I usually end up eating tag soup or shooting a doe for meat on the last evening of the last day. I would like to find "the ones" ....3-4 150+ bucks...that would make me feel a little more confident...that being said I do love almost nothing more than matching wits with one specific buck.
Even with the short tine length that one buck is really nice. He would definitely be hard to pass up unless you know that no one will take him.

Thank you....we are definitely give it our best shot.

Best of luck to ya..its getting close
Bad thing this year is almost everyone I know is struggling to find a 140 buck..weird year

Best of luck to you too brother.....I agree...very weird... I normally have no issues finding 140 bucks...this year I have only had one buck over 140 on camera and that is deadeye... I have seen a few 140 plus bucks in the fields but not as many as I have seen in years past.
-
It has been a weird summer.. I am just now starting to get more decent bucks on camera. Not sure if its the new spots or just the right time of year?
I have several of the 150+ bucks on camera this year, but have found "the one" so I guess we are in opposite situations..
I may be willing to trade ;)

lol...right now I don't have much to trade. Deadeye has dropped off the map again. 10 days...no pics. I made some adjustments and hope to pick him up again.

That story sounds familar :bash:

I haven't posted any pics in a while so here are a couple. This nice 7x7 elk recently came in....and he isn't the biggest one I have seen in the area...still trying to get pics of the big one. Apparently deadeye reads the regulations. He hasn't come into the camera since 9 August but he showed up again less than one hour after shooting light on the last day of Archery.

Okay...the pics didn't post yesterday for some reason but I was able to get them up today..see above. :yeah:
-
Cool pics
-
I get all excited about the deer on my cam's...then i see this guy. I can't imagine the dreams/nightmares he gives you.
-
Go get em!
-
Funny I got a pic a bear that look exactly same with stripe... as for the buck... once that velvet comes off, his diet changes, and will hold up a lil tighter and a lil more nocturnal until pre rut... I say find the does... and be ready Nov.
-
 We have the does...now he just needs to follow through on his end of the deal.
-
Very cool watching Deadeye grow.............
-
I'll take one of each (elk and deer) that same size
-
Here are a few new pics of deadeye....and he is no longer the biggest buck I have on camera...but you will have to wait a while before I will post pics of the big one. :chuckle:

amazing how them big bucks know when to hide. Hope you can find him during late season. Good luck.
-
Dude, seriously??? Bigger and you are making us wait??? Cmon!!!! :bash:
Great Pics!! thanks a ton!
-
now if you were to get dead eye, and have him mounted would you have the eye fixed or??
-
I would try to get it mounted with his eye as natural as possible. I have daylight photos and the eye just appears a little lazy more so than anything else. That being said... I have a bigger buck that will be my primary target during the late season.
-
Great buck and bull DB hope you connect. Good luck.
