Title: Questions and info on tanning
Post by: Palmer on June 19, 2011, 07:54:42 AM
I'm tanning my first hide this weekend and will be tanning 2 more hides later this week.  So I have a few questions.

Could there be a section on tanning?  It would be neat to see pictures of tanned hides, clothing, or drums made from the hides of our game.  I plan to make a couple drums next year.

What is the most common procedure for hides?  I watched videos and read up on it.  First I soaked my hides for a day in water, salt, and ash from the fire place.  A friend told me to use hydrated lime instead.  So I soaked them in lime for three more days.  The lime worked great.

So what's the difference between hide and rawhide?

If I Stretch the hide out on a frame and just let it dry then will it be good for a hand drum?

If I do the same on a frame and frequently push on it with a stick or oar then I've noticed in videos it will be soft, right?

Well I have deer brains but only one but I have 3 deer hides.  So I blended a pig brain and put that in some water.  I soaked my hide overnight in the pig brain and now plan to finish my hide today.  I'm showing my two boys, 7 and 9, how to do this for Father's Day weekend.

Here is a picture of my youngest boy and I.  He's using a shell to scrape the hide but we finished with a scraper.
