Title: big bucks sturgeon trip 6/7/08
Post by: jackelope on June 08, 2008, 09:12:06 PM
well, saturday was the day that we went sturgeon fishing with huntnphool. it was a great day and am glad we got to go and put some faces to the names...it was a pleasure meeting you guys and spending the day shooting the *censored* and catching a few fish on the big C.
the day started off with a bang when what seemed like about 10 minutes after we got the lines in the water...boneaddict hooked up. i think we all thought we were in for a great day  of fishing. this fish ended up being the biggest of the day at 42". we got 6 fish all together, all sublegal. wd-40 or not, we couldn't put a legal fish in the boat...nonetheless it was a great day on the water meeting some new friends. our guides huntnphool and wf70gonehuntin know their stuff on that water and showed us how it was done.
here's bone's fish....
putting the horses to him:

getting a little advice from wade:

and what ended up being a pisscutter sturgeon.

Well I just got home and pulled the essentials out of the boat, will clean it up and post pics and more to the story tomorrow evening I have to be in Anacortis in 8 hours and need a little sleep before I drive another couple hours. Today the river looked like being on a lake, hardly a ripple most of the day and sunshine, yes I said sunshine. M-Ray even had to put shorts on but more to the story tomorrow.

Thanks for getting the pics up Jack.  I'm glad the ones of 50 cal turned out.  I wasn't sure what setting you had, I just started shooting.  Fun doesn't describe it.  The commraderie was way better than the fishing, but it was awesome to catch my first sturgeon.  I also caught the smallest for the day.  I joked about spraying him with wd-40 and tossing him back in as bait.  See him in about 300 years.
MRay in shorts :yike:   Hope it wasn't like the dude next to us in a tanktop that we couldn't decide was a man or a woman.  :chuckle:
HELLUVA day guys.
I tried to get Jack on film with his, but they went and quick released on me byt he time I found his camera.  I guess we'll just have to catch another one.

Sorry you all had to miss M_ray in shorts, I would have joined him but I had dressed for fowl weather and would have looked very interesting with my hunting boots on and shorts  :yike:

You will see what the weather was like when I can post up some photos, it was a glorious day to say the least.

I'll post up some pics when I figure out how to process them, Right now I have to take the kids to the bus, I'll be back shortly !!!

Hey Jack, how'd the kiss pic turn out.  I wasn't ready for her to put the lips on me. My expression should have been priceless.

OK !!

First I want to send a huge Thank You very much out to our guides, they did an outstanding job in showing myself and the two boys (Chris_D and Josh's brother Jamie) a fantastic fishing adventure. Thank You Rob and Waid for your hospitality and generosity in this event, You treated us like family and it was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with you guys, we truly appreciate everything you have done and are doing for our nephew and brother and son and grandson and friend.

If anyone of you are ever invited to go and do something with these two guys, drop whatever you are doing and go, I assure you you will not regret it !!!

The only regret I have about this entire weekend is that I didn't take more time to spend with the guys that fished on Saturday, There was so much I would have liked to talk about with you all and personally thank everyone for their donation to my nephews care fund, after you all arrived at the launch I have to admit I was a bit intimidated by the giants that got out of that boat, you guys are something else, Maybe I will run into some of you again, it was a real pleasure for me just to be there and shake your hands.

Now for the painfull part !!

I am told by the two boys that were keeping score that we boated 12 Sturgeon and two of them were keepers one was Huntnphool's 45 1/2" the other was M_ray's at 47 1/2".  Jamie caught 2 and one was 42" and the other was 39" and Chris_D's two sturgeon were sub-legal but we took some pictures anyway.

The weather was glorious all day as you will see from the pics, foul weather gear was not necessary, the water was so calm at times the only ripple was from the sturgeon splashing on the surface while playing tag with each other and working on their tan  8)

Here is the crew loading the weapons.

and Jamie with his first sturgeon on.

Turns out this one was a bit unruly for Jamie to handle so the captain renders some assistance.

and the battle is won !!

Do I see a look of aprehension ??

Next is Chris with his first dinosaur ever !!

Not too sure if he is having a good time or not  :dunno:

OH yep !! now I am convinced !!

Next is M_ray's turn but it will require its own post so I'll BRB !!!

What....you guys let MRay catch the biggest fish.  We won't ever live that one down.

First I want to say that it was a pleasure to meet M_ray finally and to spend the day with him, some how the stories behind the pictures becomes much more realistic when told in person, Thanks Mark, I (we) really enjoyed your company on the boat.

M_ray has the first keeper of the day and it is an acrobat, what a rush !!

And you guys didn't need a designated photographer?  I'm not sure how I missed that whole thread.  I would have been in on the bidding.  Although I'm not sure how many want to be stuck on a tiny boat with a lawyer...   :dunno:  A couple beers and I'm a regular Joe though!

Waid says "I know it's not a bluegill, just grab it right here"

Look at those keepers.  We must have been telling too many hunting stories and watching too many eagles and missed all the subtle nibbles.   AWESOME.  Huntnphool probably cost me about $60,000 in regards to a nice boat.  I'll have to bring Wade along to bait my hook though.  Those darn anchovies don't look anythign like a fly.   Well done.  I wish I could have been out there when they were biting a little more, but I still wouldn't replace the day I had.  It goes along way to the amount of smiles Rob gae EVERYONE on both days.  If there is any such thing as Karma, for hunting, he is going to be anchoring a monster buck or bull this fall.   Nicely done......Nicely done!

Looks like you guys had a blast.  I had a couple buddies go down a couple weeks ago and did not catch a fish!  They saw alot rolling but no hook-ups.  They did see a bear feeding in an opening by deep river though.  A few years ago I got a 12ftr by the beached boat in one of the photos ya got on here.  It was tough keeping her out of the pilings.  She came out of the water 5 times and fought her for 1 1/2hrs.  Going laker fishing in chelan this weekend and down to chinook next for the dinosaurs.  Great to see the smiles on the childrens faces too!

No Robodad the pleasure was all mine trust me I enjoyed every minute of it! Even when Rob and I were missing all those bites! It was great to see Jamie and Chris having a blast and the smiles tell their story ... And Waide well what can I say it's been way to long since we last saw each other I promise to not let that happen again I really enjoyed our time together Thanks for everything!

I too wish we had more time to spend visiting with the guys as they got off the boat Saturday but it was just an honor to be there and shake their hands and put a face to the names Even if I did have to look way up to see them!!!! Jeesh Bone, Jackelope and 50 cal are Giants! Sorry Fanatic your're just average like me! But what ever you guy's ate growing up I can tell you This? ... I didn't get any of it!!!!

This all wouldn't have happened without Huntnphool generosity and I know you guys haven't known him as long as I have but this kind of behavior doesn't surprise me in the least!  he has allways been like this to everyone since he was 7 years old! Thanks for the great day Rob  :)

I'll look at my camera after dinner and see if I have anything worth posting ... And Rob if it's the pic I'm thinking of  :nono: ...don't forget I can still take you!   :boxin:

Alright, I will have to post a few pics at a time and a little of the story with each one, I am trying to take care of all the stuff I have been neglecting the last few weekends.

Friday was a nightmare trying to tie up loose ends and get packed and out of here. I ended up calling the bait boy/anchor hauler and telling him to get his crap together and head to my house, we wouldn't be leaving until 3:00am and he could crash on the couch until I was ready. Went to bed at 10:00 and got up at 2:00, threw all kinds of stuff at WF70, turned on the tv with the volume up, turned on the lights, hit him in the face with a couple rolled up towels, nothing made him budge. Finally put the Vulcan death grip on his calf and he popped up. We loaded the car and boat and headed out, stopping at the FlyingJ for fuel. $199.50 later in the Excursion :bash: we were on our way, thank God I already had fuel in the boat. The only good thing about leaving this early is it puts us in prime time for viewing animals at first light, this trip was no exception. We spotted at least 100 elk on the way and almost squashed a yote running across the road. Here are a few we saw once we got down to Willipa.

Met two of the guys at the Chinook Country Store and drooled over the 200" buck on the wall, grabbed bait and hit the ramp where we were greated by 50CalJim. At this point I was wondering if I had made a mistake by not topping of the boat at the fuel station, I could tell we would be burning more than normal. We launched the boat and pulled up to the dock to warm the engine and wait for Bone. About 5 minutes later I see enough camo walking our way to hide my entire boat duck hunting, now there is no doubt in my mind I made a mistake not topping off :chuckle: Bone got on the boat and we wasted no time heading out. Hammered down the throttle and wondered if we were ever going to get on step, to say these guys are big is a gross understatement :lol4: I noticed later that while standing in the back of the boat Bone could see over the top, I need about 3 steps of a ladder. After we made a run up river and set the anchor it took Bone just a couple minutes to rip the first lip, and he holds nothing back when setting a hook let me tell you. Here is the pics I got of Bones first. Check out the orange tag on the back of the dorsal. By the way Bone, the tag number was ( H1 32331 ) you can contact F&G and have them send you the info on it if you want.

:chuckle: yep, I drank milk when I was a kid.  Mray, no matter what, I still can't throw a whole elk on my back and pack it out though.  (earlier joke)
and yes folks that is God in the clouds smiling upon our day.
Cool pics Rob.  I'm very sorry you guys had to wait on me, eventhough I was 15 minutes early, these guys were good to go.  Thats my kind of folk there.  They didn't ahve to prod their woman folk out of bed to get them to the launch.  Rob thinks Wade is bad.  My partner threw the towels back at me with shoes and other things in them. :) j/k
Cool pictures Rob.  I was still hoping one of you got the damn fish giving me a kiss.  Not bad for a gal that can suck the ......better stop while I am ahead.
I was very thankful he mentioned to watch the spines on the side of those.   Not like your little steelhead.  These things have a bite to them.

Great writeups and pics. I tried to warn you guys that 50Cal and Andre the Giant have a lot in common. No worries, Mray, phool, and fanatic, there's a lot of normal sized people like us out there. You must have thought you were in the land of the giants.

Thanks for offering your boat, time, fuel, brother, and friend (Mray) for a great cause huntnphool, I missed out this year but hopefully will get to bid on another next.

Lack of fish means I didn't get as many pics as I was planning on but 50Cal, Fanatic and Jackelope got in on the action too, here are a couple of Jackelope. I think Pope may have hit on something, a photographer is a must next time, I was just too busy trying to not get stepped on like a bug.

I went to get some of Jack with his own camera, bu tcouldn't find it.  He likes to scatter things out throughout the boat.  I bet if you go look you have something of his in there. :)   When I finally found it.  Figured out to take the lens cap off you guys had quick released his fish.   :bash:  Funny that we would need a photogrpaher on there.  We certainly had enough cameras stored throughoutthe boat.  :)

It was truelly a pleasure meeting 50Cal, Fanatic, Jackelope and Bone on Saturday, its a shame it takes a sick young man to get folks out of their comfort zones and meet new people, but a negative has been turned into a positive and I look forward to spending more time with some new friends. I really feel bad we couldnt find more fish but will be calling you guys if I head down again before the season ends.

Sunday, like I posted earlier, was one of those very rare days you get down there, the wind was non existant all day while fishing but made up for it on the way back down river. We ended up fishing the same spots, almost the exact same time as the day before but the fish were more cooperative. We ended up boating 12 fish, which is still a slow day compared to every year prior, but missed well over 40 good bites. There was a stretch where I must have missed 10 in a row, and was not at all happy about it either >:( Here are a few of Robo gettin busy.

M-Ray got the big fish of the day but had to make a deal with Chris so as not to end up with the small fish of the day as well. :chuckle: Here are the pics I got of M-Ray milking his turn, you would have thought it was an oversize the way he was whining :'( Just kidding, everyone on the boat all weekend did a great job fighting the fish, and all the rods made it home too :IBCOOL:

We kind of cheated on that minnow, It looks much bigger by looking at the bent rod then it really was, see I caught a greedy fish cause it had gobbled up M_ray's gear also but at the time we didn't know it so I was pulling in his gear as well as mine and that iddy biddy minnow sturgeon, so don't be fooled by what you see.

I could tell that when I was up and about huntnphool usually kept his distance, he just didn't want me to trip and fall on him !!  :yike:

This pic sums it up for me, kids having fun without a TV or hallucinogenics. :whoo:

I've been warned about the other pic I got so thats pretty much it from my camera. I want to thank each and every one of you for a wonderfully memorable weekend and hope we can all get together and try it again some time. I enjoyed meeting everyone and hope in spite of the bad weather Saturday, and lack of fish cooperation, you all could find something you enjoyed too.

And to you for making it possible, I know for a fact that if the boys and I are invited back another time there will be no "I have to think about it" going on. consider it a "No Brainer !!" It was absolutely awesome !!

Nice fish Mark.

I resent (j/k) that Big fish smallest fish comment.  :)  Just because my last one should have been sprayed with WD-40 and thrown back for bait for that 10 footer that jumped out of the water.

One last time:  Thanks for the great day!!!!!!  Weather was just fine. Made for a great boat ride.  I hate cooking out there anyway.

By the way...thanks for taking pics too.   I'm usually the one stareing out of a viewfinder.  I'm glad you guys got some good documentation of the trip.  I hope Robodad that you can share this with Josh and his Dad.  I hope the little guy has stories for his big brother about all the giants he met, some prehistoric, some in size and stature and some by the size of their hearts.

You know it Bone !!

Jamie has been faunching at the bit to get ahold of Josh to tell him about the trip, They are scheduled to arrive home today from this round of chemo and we are planning on getting them together via web cam over the internet so they can talk face to face.

Jamie has been going 700 mph since we got off the boat and is telling anyone that will listen to him about the fish he caught and one of the highlights for him was the contests he lost then redeemed himself and won his money back from wf70gonehunting by taking a nap.

Thanks again you guys for showing real patience with Jamie, he can really be a hand full for sure !!!

Huntnphool probably cost me about $60,000 in regards to a nice boat.

No kidding.  That polish job is something else.  I am going to have to detail my rig before he'll ride around in it.  Otherwise, he might prefer to walk everywhere.

It goes along way to the amount of smiles Rob gae EVERYONE on both days.  If there is any such thing as Karma, for hunting, he is going to be anchoring a monster buck or bull this fall.   Nicely done......Nicely done!

...and a big pile of coyotes.

And another thing on that note ... It's not M_ray in shorts that was so scary ... it was the changing into them that no one wants to see! :bdid:  I'm not as sexy in my whitey tightey's as I used to be! :o

Robo it's fine he is just your typical kid! But I was most impressed with them lasting the whole day, Rob and I were talking about it in the morning and wondering how long they would last! but they were little troopers for sure and I think Jamie and Chris watched those tips as much as anyone out there waiting for a bite!!!! It was so cool to see them do that and see the start of a passion that will last them thier lifetime! That's why we take kids out right guy's?

Yep, I kidded Jamie at the dock.  You were there.... I told him it took me 37 years to catch my first sturgeon and he was going to do it in the morning at such a young age.  His eyes ere sure big when we were tlaking abouthose fish out there.  I bet they really were on the boat.

We had our own little one on the boat.  He took it in good sport though, especially when we kidded him about being able to reach teh bucket.  :)

I havent had a chance to reply to this thread, because I've been busy since we got back, but it was a great trip. These guys were alot of fun to spend the day with, and Phool is a great guide. Once again, thanks to phool and his brother for donating their time and knowledge. If anyone has a chance to fish with these guys, take it. Just remember to keep Phool in his captains chair, and you will do fine. :chuckle:

Had some friends go out on "chartered" sturgeon trips today, 14 fishermen per boat, 2 boats total. One boat caught no keepers and 4 undersize, the other caught 9 keepers and two oversize. I'll get the pics in the next few days.
