my brother who is 17 and has never shot anything drew the LT Murray quality deer tag for Nov. 14Th-20Th. We have hunted in that area for years, my dad probably 30+ years with his cousin and my grandpa. my grandpa drew the tag last year and took a really nice deer, he hunted in the robinson area and seen a lot of deer. that's probably where we plan on going. we usually dont see alot of deer during deer season but start seeing them during elk so were just kinda hoping the weather will be pushing them down towards the robinson and Joe watt area. we have never hunted there during late November so any info on other places to check out in the unit would be helpfull. Thanks.

I think a couple of the roads up there washed out, so those might be a couple of the only areas that aren't accessible by vehicle come hunting season. If I have the tag, I would take a mountain bike past the washout on Manastash and hunt back up in there.
I have killed several deer up in there and it used to be my favorite hunting area until the hair loss syndrome devastated the deer population. I haven't hunted up there for 4 years, so I don't know if they have started to rebound yet.
I am sure he will fill his tag, but I would suggest that he shoot the first 4x4 with eye guards that you guys see.

Seen some dandies up Elk Heights during a late elk hunt a few years back might try up that direction pretty sure that tag covers 336 also.
-
Doesnt it only cover 340 and 342? If not, then 336 would be a good option as well.

There should be way less pressure in this area this year, so that could be a great tag. I would still start higher up though. The teanum might be re-opened by then by the manashtash wont be for possibly two years.

I agree, do you know how the deer are doing in there? The deer in my avatar was taken up there in 2005 and I seen a few bigger one's after I shot him.
The biggest deer I have ever seen in there was in 2006 after I had already tagged out. I seen several other bucks in the area after I shot my deer, so I took my uncle and my buddy back up the next day and we seen a pig.
I was with my uncle and my buddy circled up and back down a draw and jumped him. The buck ran right down the trail under us at about 20 yards and my uncle missed him. He never slowed down and my uncle pretty much shot from the hip because of how close he was. Needless to say we we sick over it, but that's why they call it hunting.
I wish I could have put a tape on him, but I know that he was over 180. We scouted that area along with other areas up there the following year and noticed the hair slip on the deer and that the numbers were way down.

The deer seem to be holding their own in that area, but I don't spend as much time up there as others. Manastash Rd and most of the roads going into the Manastash GMU are under a no motorized vehicle closure due to road damage. The only way in is through the Wenas if you are lucky, and in from Naches (unless the Naches Ranger District has areas closed as well). So it will be a hard hunt if you stay down low, but it may be good because of the lack of pressure in the area!! Taneum is open to one lane traffic, I was up there tonight. It will be hard to get a camper through, so anyone who want to camp up there this summer just be aware.

You can get into the manashtash through barber springs but the road is out at buck meadows. You can get into the teanum through woods and Steele, but 3330 is out between the two. I went riding up moonlight prior to the flood, and I was impressed with the number of deer I saw. They have been making a good come back after the hair loss deal.

Should hit the middle latter part of the rut. I am always surprised at the big bucks that show up in 340 342 during the rut

I also put in for this tag but was not drawn. Should be one heck of a hunt..

Thanks for all the responses.
i cant wait to see whats there during the rut when my grandpa had the tag they went in through the elk fence in the robinson and then up to the left, towards the handicap road and video taped about 15 good bucks just in that few miles of road. went back where they were staying and looked at the tape to see which one he like the best and went back the next morning and shot it, it was a 4x4 with eye guards with a 25" spread, there were a few more just like it but this one had more mass. the deer didn't have a care in the world they were there a lot of the nice bucks they got on tape were bedded down 10 yards off the road.

Congrats on the hard part of drawing the tag. The closure as i was advised by the forest service is that the area is closed as of now which means no entry at all. They are letting some residents that own cabins up into the area. the FS told me that a total closure means no walk in, horses or anything. I thought that was a little extreme but they said that they will evaluate it soon and list opened and closed roads. The purpose to the all access closure in the south fork was to keep people from accessing the area through the closed county road or by doing the loop from the Taneum. I would pray that they keep the roads closed because that make for a great hunt if you are willing to hike or backpack in. I think they will open the areas but keep some road access closed. Good luck

Kill more... I forgot all about copies.I will get the camera back from my brother in law and have him help me figure out how to make a copy.

There are some nice bucks in those units you have to be on top of your game to get them normaly but they are there. I would hope for some weather and stay around manahtash but thats me. Ive seen some heavy horn down by the canyon almost every year but come season they know and vanish tell season is over.

We have seen a lot of nice bucks and good sign during late archery Elk just past the "safety zone" there at Taneum, :twocents:
