Where would i find a map or something on the web. That has the deer migration routes??
-
Do they even exist? I thought that was all part of scouting.
-
:yeah:
I know of a good Blacktail rout but that goes to the grave with me. :chuckle:
-
I would bet there probably have been some studies on radio collared deer used to track their migration routes. I know where I hunt in Idaho the whitetails migrate out of the High Country to winter near Grangeville & their migration has been studied by using collared deer. Good Luck & let me know if you find anything for E. WA deer. You may also want to check with area biologists.

Look for these. :chuckle: :chuckle:

That's a good book. Don Zeigler, author. Out of print, I think, but I've seen used copies for sale.

I would bet that if you did a little looking, you could find something like that for a few areas in Washington too. I would also bet you'd find it in a place you would not expect it to be found. As in...I'd bet it wasn't put out by the game dept.
;)

If you really want to learn about the migration habits of Okanogan mule deer, read Zeigler's book. Then learn to read a topographical map. If they're moving, mulies usually travel the path of least resistance, just like humans -- as long as there is good cover.
True, Zeigler was a game dept. employee, but the book is thorough and complete. Possibly the best resource for hunters ever developed by the WDFW.
I have read the book, and it gave me a better understanding of Okanogan mule deer, and their habits.
How many have read Zeigler's book?
-
Thanks i will look for that book. :)
-
Thompson Ridge in the Gardner unit used to be a route back in the day (30 years ago). It's pretty slim pickings these days though.
-
Thanks for the info guys, I just ordered the book

I love it. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

That one is premo :chuckle: All the ones around here have about 20 bullet holes in them :chuckle: You should know that slayer :chuckle:
-
Say what you want, but I would put a Redneck up against any gangstuh in a drive by shooting. Gangstuhs spray and maybe hit one human sized target in 100 rounds. A Redneck can put a nice tight group in a deer crossing sign at 60mph. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Just go up into the Entiat and follow the trails back into the wilderness.

Me too. Sounds like a really good book to have. Been hunting in Okanogan county for awhile now but you can never have too much knowledge.

I'm pissed. I bought this book off amazon and it never came. I checked my purchase history and it wasn't there. Now there is only one copy left but they want $300 dollars for it... :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: I check and made sure when I bought it. It said it went through.... :bash: :bash:
-
ouch, ive had that happen :bash:
-
How much are those books worth,i might auction one of mine off.
-
I'm now accepting all book donations
-
No offense, but I own the book, and don't find it too useful at all. A lot of information that's outdated for today's herds. :twocents:
-
the book would be useful in learning behavioral aspects of the deer
-
Their behavior has changed a lot. Back then you could easily go a day in mid Nov without seeing a buck. Nowdays, I can see 30 bucks a day in any NCW gmu in mid Nov.
-
I'm not so much pissed that I didn't get the book. I'm more mad that they screwed up my order.
-

I dunno about that.. I think its not so much the deer changing behavior but the general season doesnt go from halloween until the end of November like back in the day (the time when you werent seeing 30 bucks a day). After the general season the deer go back and start doing their own thing again and that could be why your seeing 30 bucks every time you go out
-
im just saying the book is still useful in that you learn about their behavior in the way of: what they eat, the habitat they like ect.. I dont think that muley behavior which has evolved over geologic time will have changed in our small scope of existence
-
I agree thats why we see lots of bucks these days during that time frame, but that is a change in deer behavior.
-
its not a change in deer behavior though because the deer always has been always will be afraid of humans.. a change in behavior would be if they walked right up to you and attacked you as demonstrated in video below
deer attacks man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWxIYX-CHFQ#)
Now thatd put a whole new spin on "the challenge of the hunt" :chuckle:
-
I rest my case. It's my bedtime, and I don't feel like arguing.. :chuckle:
-
no animals were harmed in the making of that video, just one dumb sumbich
