Title: Building My First Layout Boat. (Updated 7/3, build complete)
Post by: gasman on June 25, 2011, 02:25:46 PM
I thought I would try my hand at building a layout boat for duck hunting. Looked at several designs and found one I liked that seemed to be pretty reasonable to build, so I bought the plans in Feb. but sense I have no garage or shop to build it in, I had to wait until the weather got better, so here I am.

The plans I bought came with a template to build the transom and front support and ended up doing my own to make it a tad bit taller in the transom. So far it has not been to hard of a build, took me about 2 hours to cut out the parts last night and I spent about 4 hours today putting it together and waiting for the epoxy to dry/ I got as far as I can for today, I want the epoxy to dry completely before I cut off the support, then I start glassing it.

These are just a few pic of the build process.

The parts cut out (some of the parts)

The transom and front support installed and startting the side walls.

The bottom half of the boat complete, and glued. Just gotta wait for the epoxy to dry.

I got the plans from http://www.hybridduckboat.com/files/ (http://www.hybridduckboat.com/files/)  They have a few different designs to chose from, and so far, I am in to it $130. There is a few other things I need to get so the price is going to go up but I should be able to keep the build about $200 + or -.

No he is not. I called and talked with him before i bought the plans because I was conserned with the amout of weight the boat would hold. He informed me the guy in the video that was testing the boat is 300lbs. With that said, I was not worried  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Boat is looking good! I built an SN last summer and have really loved it! Looks like you're getting away a lot cheaper than I did. I think I ended up with about $400 into mine after wood, glass, hardware, and paint.

Kind of screwed up a little in the build process (fortunately the project is quite forgiving), but here's the end result:

Thanks for posting the great pics and progress reports. Looks like you are moving right along with a fun project. I have been looking at designs and plans for a while now and am hoping to build my own marsh boat this summer. If the marsh boat goes well I will tackle a larger duck boat. I really like the "Duck Hunter"  by Gator Boats though I might make it a bit larger than their design.

If i remember correctly your not supposed to use bondo... don't dry very well...

As long as it is sealed propperly by the FG and mixed well, it is hard as a rock.

It's not some thing you want to leave exposed to the elements, but it's OK to use. It has fFG over it (a few layers) and will be painted when I am done. There will be no water getting to it when I am done, Unless I screwed up big time some where  >:(

i would have rather used Kitty Hair, but I all ready had teh bomdo in my garage, so i decited to use it and save some penny's.

OK, so I finished glassing it today and took it out for a test float  :chuckle:

Found a small leak in the back corner when I was on the water. When I got home, I sanded it down, glassed it again, and then decided to add an extra layer of FG cloth to the upper corner all the way down the boat, this area seems to stick out to me as the most likely place to leak, so I glassed them one last time, and I should be golden

Gonna paint it tomorrow and then it time to find the hardware I want to add to it.
The stability was awesome but  with out a keel, the flat bottom moves side to side more then I thought it would wile paddling. Gonna get a Kaiyak style paddle to see how that helps with the movement on the water.

OK, finished up the build today  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

After floating the boat yesterday, finding one small leak and repairing it, I painted the boat today. I tried 2 different camo patterns before settling wit this one.

Several coats of Green (over a half gallon of brush on camo paint)

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi249.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg225%2Fgasman400%2Fcid__downsized_0703111310.jpg&hash=ab5201439b85928765e6f492052dbd0b03486cd0)

And the final camo pattern I settled for (painted over the two I did previous to this one)
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi249.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg225%2Fgasman400%2Fcid__downsized_0703111908.jpg&hash=3cb0419d472a9a18866a0fb62d24345e889ba6bd)

Still have some accessories and add on's to do, but the build is complete.

And every boat needs a name and when I get the stencils I will name it "BARBIE BOAT"  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Boat is looking good! I built an SN last summer and have really loved it! Looks like you're getting away a lot cheaper than I did. I think I ended up with about $400 into mine after wood, glass, hardware, and paint.

Kind of screwed up a little in the build process (fortunately the project is quite forgiving), but here's the end result:

How do you like this boat? I think it looks bad a$$ and i want to build one. My cousin and hunting partner is a paint and body guy and i think i've about got him convinced. What is the tray on the back for? Is it stable? 2 guys or one? And how about carrying dekes and what not? Do you run a motor? Sorry for the 1000 questions. Just getting excited for the first time this year about the season. I've been so busy fishing and doing other things i was a little preoccupied. Thanks for the boost!

Boat looks great too Gas, way to get er done especially with no garage!

Snocohunter,
Yes you can put a small motor on this boat.
It is meant for only one person, but if you wanted to build a boat for two, make it a 10' boat and should be OK. There is a new design that adds pontoons to the back of the boat that you fill with foam and it will add to the buoyancy.
The rack on the back can be used to tie down a bag if dekes or put a milk carton on it to carry what ever you need. I imagine a dog can sit back there also.
And yes they are very stable.
Check out there web site if you have not done that yet, and look at the videos they have for there boats. http://www.hybridduckboat.com/files/ (http://www.hybridduckboat.com/files/)

The project looks like a good one.  The boat turned out nice.  The camo needs a few more shadows or transitions from the green to the tan color for better break up if your looking for any input on the camo job.   :twocents:  That's just me be anal about my camo patterns.  I like to make things disappear into the background.

Kind of screwed up a little in the build process (fortunately the project is quite forgiving), but here's the end result:
***pic removed for size of post :)

Happy building!

So apparently I've been MIA for a few weeks. Oddly enough the tray area on the back was my mistake when I built the cockpit frame, but I ended up liking the way it came out. I believe it was supposed to be rounded. I added the railings with scrap wood, so they're just PL glued on (I think I put resin on them, too  :dunno:).. For the most part I use it for spare decoys or my blind bag. I would recommend a gun rack on either side but obviously you don't NEED one; I do use it though.

I've got handles on the front and back (stainless handles and screws) that I picked up at home depot and added a backing piece of the 1/2" behind each for extra support, and that has helped out a good bit. They add maybe 6" to the overall length though.

I don't run a motor but I kind of want to get a little 2hp or something. I'd need to build a transom up first. As for carrying decoys I've started cramming them up in the bow when I'm paddling around since I sit on a seat/back rest that I made.

The project looks like a good one.  The boat turned out nice.  The camo needs a few more shadows or transitions from the green to the tan color for better break up if your looking for any input on the camo job.   :twocents:  That's just me be anal about my camo patterns.  I like to make things disappear into the background.

I totally agree. When I painted this I started with a green base coat then held up real grass and used it as a stencil for brown, then for black. What doesn't show up in this picture is the 'sand' colored Krylon camo paint that I used. Totally adds depth and gives the look of both light and dark vegetation stacked up.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions!

Picked up this two man boat from CL and went in halves with my cousin. Was built by a gentleman in monroe. Built like a german tank, pretty damn heavy though. I wouldn't call it a pack in boat because no way you're carrying it very far. He said it was supposedly 90# but i'm guessing more like 150# plus. Good thing it came with a canoe cart from cabelas, rolls around like a dream. Going to add some shadows to the reeds so they aren't so vibrant, add some gun racks inside, and maybe a blind, and of course some sort of seats. trying to decide on what type of paddles to get. SO many options.

So gasman. Now that you have had a change to use your build, is there anything you would change aobut your build? Where have you used it/ kind of water, and have you used a motor. I'm likely going to start my build so i want some feedback from a local..

I want to use mine on the bay and freshwater I got the Hybrid 10NL plans and will likely put pods on it because i would like to use a motor and have a dog box behind me.  I was thinking about adding oar locks  like in this pic because I don't want to pay Lic but still may want to use it on areas that are controlled by Coast gaurd. Anythoughts?

I mostly hunt Skagit area but would likely take it to potholes for a few hutns with my buddy.

I would make a few changes to fit the boat to me, but all in all, its a good design.

One thing I would change is the depth of the boat. I would go a little deeper in depth. Im a fat guy and it sits lower in the water with me in it then Low97ram's boat (we built the same boat).

Motor mount, and rails on the back (just like Crispy has on his)

Over all I am happy with it. I do plan on building a 10 foot boat to fit my dog and I both.

The over all stability of it is awsome. You can stand one side and  :pee:     Have not fell in yet  ;)

I think the Kayak paddle would be better. Lighter weight and easier to store in or on the boat.

I gotta get one for this season, the single paddle thing is BS.

So what does this gain from my 14ft duck boat that will run in 6" of water?

The advantage is being able to use it in small water areas. Places where trailers are not able to be taken and being able to hide in a much smaller area.
Much easier to conseal a small but then a big boat IMO.

i think its intended to be a layout boat.  small and low.  well, with gasmans "expansions" on the boat, it might be losing its classification as a layout.   :chuckle:
i like it gasman

My buddy build one on layout ideas (they bought plans but couldn't wait so they did it without them.) He added a transom to it. Should have built a shelf too for the battery. He's biggest regret right now is not installing a drain plug, as in never drilled the hole for one. Lucky for him I "had" a pump in case I rolled my kayak. Oh, and for all those guys that are afraid to shoot a shotty from a kayak, it's not the firing that gets you, it's when you don't realize how much you move your hips to aim. I fired off two from mine today and when I went to grab shells I realized I was 1/2" from getting water in the cockpit/ flipping.  :yike: Luckily I remembered to move my shoulders in the direction of the low side so my hips righted it just before cataclysm.  :IBCOOL: Oh, and missed the ducks I was shooting at  :bash:
