This will be my first year trying to call bears...so it should be fun. I wont be in a stand..but will be finding a nice high stump to over look (i have one in mind for the bear spots that are close by my house). Should be exciting....i am wondering what else will come running... ;)

When your senses are in overdrive and on edge even a small bobcat running through the brush will get your heart pumping....LOL

I am getting amped up already.  Trail cam has been real slow on bear but i am seeing some sign.  We went up a few days ago and watched one for alittle bit.

Hey Billythekidrock~

Ya..I am sure I will by hyper sensitive when I call...I know black bears dont attack often, but I am still kind of paranoid about it...even if I am armed....should be a good time. ;)

One thing, don't get discouraged too quickly.  Put a watch out in front of you so you can keep an eye on the time, 45 min to an hour is a LONG time and seems twice as long when your calling.  It is VERY exciting, but I find lots of guys who give up too quickly.  Hang in there and you will call in a bruin.

Excellent advice Machias!

Thanks for the advice....I remember the first time i called in a black tail....rattled for some time etc...nothing..I thought..well that was fun...I turn around and look up the hill...a buck and 2 does looking at me like im retarded. So, I throw an arrow at the buck (he was standing imbetween two trees, chest shot...all i could see was his base of horns going up, then they were blocked from the trees), hits a fallen tree infront of him (i was down hill...shot too low), he scampered off...but still a good time.

In August I almost always take a group of Boy Scouts backpacking for 5 - 7 days up in the Cascades. We generally run across at least a few bears... Had delusions about hauling the '06 along, and having the Scouts help haul out the hide, skull & meat, but somehow I just don't think that would work out real well....

When I go out looking for bear, rifle in hand and with the worst of intentions towards the bear... I seldom see one. I think the bears are outsmarting me so far...

The joke would really be on you when you decided to shoot one of them about 7 miles in.  I swear I can't kill a bear unless its a whole day hike out.  Funny how that works.

I've got a decent spot off of I-90, but I worry about shooting one in the heat of early August.

I'm looking for bears this season. I have not seen any this year... but I have not been getting enough spare time to look much. If I'm lucky maybe I'll get one with a Yew Bow. Who knows?

I linked this thread to the Calendar as the Bear Season Opener.

Opener is coming up fast. I don't have much time to scout right now, but I would really like to get one with my bow. It is just too brushy where I rifle hunt.

Will it drive you nuts knowing that the opener is in about three weeks and you won't be here for about seven? LOL

Went out today to pull down my trail cam because it hasnt been taking pictures.  Checked a spot that i have seen some sign in and seen a sow and cub.  Went to get the trail cam and of course no pics.  We checked one more area and as we were heading back to the truck a 100 pounder popped out of the timber.  This spot produced 5 bears last year and is looking promising this year aswell.

Rick - Let me know how the ladders work.
I do know that they are going to be cutting a few acres around the mainline and rez, but there will be no feed for a couple years.

Sounds like a great time Rick.

I'm not out for bear crawlin until mid August. I feel antsy to check out another spot I have in mind. I'm anxious to see if I will have a good chance at one myself.

Hope you get some photos to share  8)

Too warm for me.  I wait until after September.  The hucks are on up high, so there should be some munchers out there.

A bit warm for me too...but it gives me an excuse to get out! I will probably just scout basically, maybe work on my calling and see what happens...but then hit it at the end of August early sept....Looking forward to it this year!

Well it looks like the spring hunters left a few in my local area. My buddy saw two singles today and the neighbor saw a sow and a cub last week. Not sure what my plans are yet, but I am starting to get a bit ansy.

I saw one at 15 feet this weekend.  I was creek fishin and looked up, she was stnading on a log that was above me in the creek.  Scared the beejeebers out of me.  the about 10 minutes later two jets came down through the canyon and banked right above me, sonic boom or whatever thescream is, totally unnerved me again.  I done thought she had me.

Went up to Baker scouting this last weekend with my bro...wearing a t-shirt/jeans...didnt see much sign (few ripped up stumps) but we were just poking around...I was out in the woods about 3 hours...skeeters were soo thick...got back to the house...girlfriend counted over 50 skeeter bites on my back alone...I have probably 15 or so on each arm...lesson learned. And I am usually the type of guy that the skeeters hate to munch on....

That's great! After getting rattled by seeing her at close range, then the scream of the jets a few minutes later...  :) So, how was your fishing afterwards? I think I'd want to sit down and have a cold one about that point. Somewhere safe...  :)

Fos - Did you hear anything from Rick?

I know that Glenn's friend shot and missed one, and Glenn was not paying attention and one crossed the road in front of him. He did not get a shot.:dunno: Both of them were hunting behind the gate that you hunted before (where you were watching along the old logging road).

Just got back from three days in the teanaway and mission units. Saw no bears. Sign was a bit sparce. Teanaway was loaded with berries, should have seen more sign...? Did see a bunch more elk this year compared to last...and not as dry as I expected. Last year at this time was drier. Saw some awesome bucks in velvet. After I check my pics, i will see if i can post any, only have minimal zoom.

Some dude took down a bear about 1/4 of a mile from us this morning. Didn't see it happen but heard it and saw the hide and such.

This was our backup plan location and there was a number of other folks around there this morning. Good to see that someone connected.

Won't be able to get out until around mid month. Will look at our primary spot and do some hiking\camping.

Saw that another brown one was being loaded up into someone's rig on the way home.

Went over to where my bro got his bear opening day...no bear sighting, but I saw two dandy elk...7 points...little bro has pics...will post when i get them, they were gorgeous. Also saw a nice 4 pt black tail..no pics, but one of the nicer black tails I have seen in a while...of course, I dont get out much. ;)

I also tried calling bears for the first time. Wind in my face, I was blowing into a gully which also lead out to a timber line (nice view of about 230yards with nasty brush), while I was sitting on a log jam. I wasnt expecting something to come up from behind, since the wind was carrying my scent over the hill...but sure enough, it sounded like a freight train was coming, so I whip around, second guessing if I really heard anything...as it stopped short of the edge that lead down to another gully, which was out of my view, but about 60 feet to my rear. So, I sat waiting for something to poke it's head out....no luck...but I think it caught my scent and bolted, as I heard it crashing as it was leaving...could have been anything..never did see it. But I do like calling. ;)

We have had bears come in from the downwind side but I don't think they were circling to check the wind. I think they were behind us when we started calling.

Did it sound like a "big" train or just a caboose? :chuckle:
